Hello, Mihkel ! As for Ukrainian (uk) layout the shortcuts should be Ctrl+Shift+6 and Ctrl+Shift+4. Thanks! If they do, then probably you should use "%MOD1+," and "Shift+%MOD1+," in the translation of that tip-of-the-day text - presuming that most users in Portugal actually are using a Portuguese keyboard layout and not, say, US International like the Dutch. However, if Portuguese keyboards indeed have a separate semicolon key (Wikipedia says the European variant doesn't and Brazilian does - but I'd trust a local to know better ;) then you might want to take a look into why this exception was added for Portuguese in the first place. Hi Mihkel, For Kazakh latin script/layout - no official version yet, haven't heard of any progress in that area, only drafts/suggestions were announced. For now it is safe to consider only current Kazakh layout which is based on Cyrillic script, We have a comma mapped to the main keyboard's `6` key which gives `;` when pressed with Shift (and period on `7` key, with Shift gives `:`). Thanks for your initiative! Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Incorrectly translated string in many languages
Hi all, I'm preparing a patch to add the same shortcut exceptions [1] for more languages where a dedicated semicolon key most likely isn't available on the keyboard - meaning that more languages would then also need to update the translation of the string mentioned in previous mail. While some locales appear rather clear-cut cases, there are others where I have unanswered questions. [1] Ctrl+comma and Shift+Ctrl+comma instead of Ctrl+semicolon and Shift+Ctrl+semicolon - for Mac, substitute Command for Ctrl. I have CC'd people from relevant language teams (as far as they are listed on our Language Teams wiki page) in case they are somehow not members of this list (sorry if anyone is annoyed by getting this email twice). Replies should only be sent to the list, though, not to everyone in CC. Do tell if you have objections to adding this change for your language, for example because everyone in your locale actually uses a US keyboard (or another layout that has a dedicated semicolon key). I tried to do a bit more research this time, but Wikipedia, Google, Microsoft keyboard layouts page [2] and various local IT-shops' websites are no match for someone who actually knows the local situation. [2] https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/globalization/windows-keyboard-layouts == Should be rather clear-cut, but asking for confirmation just in case == Aragonese (an) - presumably most users have Spanish layout? Occitan (oc) - according to Wikipedia, used in France, Spain, Italy, Monaco (For all of these, see also the notes at the end of this email.) == Languages written using multiple scripts == Mongolian (mn) - Cyrillic and Mongolian script. LibO localization is in Cyrillic. Period, comma and colon keys exist on Cyrillic layout (however Shift+comma produces "8"), so Ctrl+period and Ctrl+comma / Ctrl+colon could be used? The Mongolian script layout is very different, and I found conflicting information about whether or not it has a dedicated semicolon key (seems to have a period key, though). If it has semicolon as well, then Ctrl+period and Ctrl+semicolon could be used. (See also the note at the end of this email.) Uzbek (uz) - Latin and Cyrillic. LibO localization is in Latin script (and the Uzbek Latin layout has a semicolon key) - but reportedly Cyrillic script is still much used, so are the shortcut exceptions needed nonetheless? (See also the notes at the end of this email.) == Layouts without comma key == Most Cyrillic layouts lack a dedicated comma key as well as a semicolon key (with Shift+period producing a comma), so another shortcut should be found for inserting date/time. What does Excel use (if it has a localized version)? If MS documentation is correct, then e.g. in Russian Excel, Ctrl+Shift+colon inserts the time and Ctrl+Shift+semicolon the date (but as colon is produced by Shift+6 on Russian layout and semicolon by Shift+4, then presumably these are essentially Ctrl+Shift+6 and Ctrl+Shift+4). Azeri (az) - Latin script, but no comma key - here, too, comma is produced by Shift+period. Belarussian (be) Kazakh (kk) - adoption of Latin script in progress? Is there already a commonly used layout for the Latin version? Kyrgyz (ky) Tajik (tg) Tatar (tt) Ukrainian (uk) == A few important notes about all of the above == 1) As mentioned in my previous mail, the localized shortcuts depend solely on LibO UI language (for now). I use version 7.0.0.1 and under Windows 10 And the keyoard is US Internationaal Kind regards, Kees Mihkel Tõnnov schreef op 08.07.2020 20:57: Hi *, There's a problematic string in LibO UI cui/messages.po which for many languages has been impossible to properly localize: "Need to insert the date in a spreadsheet cell? Type %MOD1+; or Shift+%MOD1+; to insert the time." Many European keyboard layouts don't have a dedicated semicolon key (Shift+comma is used instead), so only one of these shortcuts works (the one for time). For a handful of languages, there has been an exception added to the code to use %MOD1+comma and Shift+%MOD1+comma instead: Finnish (fi) - translations still refers to semicolon Portuguese in Europe (pt) - translation completely omits the second/third key in the shortcut Portuguese in Brasil (pt-BR) - translations still refers to semicolon Russian (ru) - translations still refers to semicolon Spanish (es) (not translated) Starting from LibreOffice 7.0, the same exception is added for a number of additional languages [1]: Albanian (sq) Bosnian (bs) Croatian (hr) Danish (da) Dutch in the Netherlands (nl-NL) German (de) Estonian (et) Faroese (fo) Icelandic (is) Italian (it) Norwegian Bokmål (nb) Norwegian Nynorsk (nn) - also translation probably should say "Tast «%MOD1 + ,» eller «Shift + %MOD1 + ,»" not "Skriv" ;) Romanian (ro) Serbian (sr) Slovenian (sl) Swedish (sv) Turkish (tr) - also typo in existing translation of "%MOD1" Members of these language teams should test (using the daily builds) if the shortcut works on a system that uses their language for UI [2]. If it does, their translation of the above string should refer to comma key, not semicolon key. And if it doesn't work, let me know (along with details about your OS locale and keyboard and LibO locale/UI language). Also, I suspect we will need to add exceptions for more languages still. So, if your language is not mentioned above, and your keyboard doesn't have a separate semicolon key either, then please let me know. I think the European "smaller" languages are probable candidates here (Lower/Upper Sorbian, Frisian, Friulian, Galician, Venetian, etc.) [1] See https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/core/+/94305 [2] The exception is unfortunately dependent on UI language, not actual keyboard layout or even locale - see https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=134470 Best regards, Mihkel Estonian translator -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: l10n+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/l10n/ Privacy Policy: https://www.documentfoundation.org/privacy
Re: [libreoffice-l10n] Incorrectly translated string in many languages
Hi Mihkel, Kazakh keyboard layout is based on Russian, and does not have the separate key assigned to semicolon. Thanks for the heads up! I personally use a Czech keyboard layout where the semicolon is on the °/^ key top left on the keyboard. So it is a single character here. (Windows 10 Pro). But, I think most Sorbs use Sorbian layouts which are based on dead keys (Shift, AltGr, ˇ, ´). Sorbian characters are typed using ˇand ´ except character ł. Sorbian layouts are based on a German layout.
