Sam Bahour serves on the Advisory Board of ¡Cafe Intifada! Due to size limits on may lists, as well as lists that don't allow attachments, we were not able to attach Sam's article to this email. For the full article referenced here, please visit the ¡Cafe Intifada! blog: http://cafeintifada.blogsource.com/ From South Central to Ramallah, land seizure seems to be the status quo of the day. Looking for the day when the simple act of raising children and planting seeds of sustenance are not brazen acts of resistance and defiance. Emma Rosenthal Cafe Intifada Original Message Subject:[ePalestine] BAHOUR: Crushed by Gate of Occupation Date: Wed, 24 May 2006 16:51:23 +0300 From: Sam Bahour [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear friends, Today it was Ramallah's turn. At around 3PM, right when schools were letting out and kids were heading home, an undercover unit of the Israeli occupation forces entered the city center. They were identified and Palestinians attacked the car. Details are still shady but it seems that the Israeli soldiers entered a commercial building (the Lou Lou Building) in the center of the city to arrest some Palestinians. A clash ensued and about 12 Israeli armored vehicles and 2 Apache helicopter gunships entered to back up the undercover soldiers. Heavy gun fighting could be heard for over an hour as parents rush to pick up their children and get out of the cross-fire. Not all did. Reports have it that an 11th grader from the Friends School, my daughters' school, was seriously injured while on his way home. 3 Palestinians were killed and over 35 wounded. These are all initial reports. Who knows what will happen tomorrow morning as we go bury our dead? In the meantime, I just finished an article about another Palestinian death - one that has stuck with me since learning about it. The story is in the attached in a Word file. I preferred to send as an attachment to maintain the formatting. In light of all this, the US Congress is baking in pride about passing a bill that puts further pressure on the Palestinians -- as if we will disappear because some Congresspersons jump to Israeli demands. Where are the American people? Better yet, where are the Israeli people? Wishing the injured a speedy recovery, Sam -- I must fight with all my strength so that the little positive things that my health allows me to do might be pointed toward helping the revolution. IRAN: NEITHER U.S. AGGRESSION NOR THEOCRATIC REPRESSION Just as it did before its invasion of Iraq, the Bush administration is manufacturing a climate of fear in order to prepare public opinion for another act of aggression -- this time against Iran. Three years ago it was the specter of Saddam Hussein's alleged weapons of mass destruction; today it's the threat of a possible Iranian nuclear bomb. Washington's immediate goal is to get the U.N. Security Council to impose sanctions on Iran and, in all probability, to justify a military attack on Tehran's nuclear facilities -- a job that may be outsourced to Israel. The White House even insists on keeping the catastrophic nuclear option on the table -- that is, using tactical nuclear weapons to strike Iranian nuclear facilities, many of which are located in or near civilian population centers. Although a full-scale invasion of Iran is highly unlikely at the moment, there can be little doubt that the neoconservatives in the Bush administration have a grand strategy that includes, eventually, regime change in Tehran as a way of further enlarging U.S. imperial power. We strongly oppose the U.S. occupation of Iraq: it has brought appalling suffering to the Iraqi people with fatalities in the tens of thousands, descent into civil war and the strengthening of the most authoritarian elements in Iraqi society -- as well as more than 2,400 U.S. soldiers dead and thousands more wounded. Likewise, the U.S. government's attempts to bully Iran are succeeding mainly in terrorizing the Iranian people and weakening internal opposition to the mullahs. The Bush administration's claim that it is promoting democracy in these two countries is the grossest hypocrisy; its only interest is power and control of oil resources. We, on the other hand, care very much about the ability of the Iraqi and Iranian people to control their own societies, about civil liberties and the rights of women, gays, workers, and ethnic minorities there. That is why we raise our voices against the current threats to Iran and call for immediate withdrawal of all U.S. forces from Iraq. We too would like to see a regime change in Tehran, but one brought about by the Iranian people themselves, not by Washington. For 26 years Iran has been ruled by a repressive theocracy. Behind the formal trappings of democracy, real power is held by an un-elected oligarchy of clerics; all electoral candidates must receive their approval, and their authority is enforced by gangs of religious thugs. President Ahmadinejad is a Holocaust denier who has called for the elimination of Israel. Iranian women lack some of the most basic human rights. They cannot dress, work, travel or choose spouses freely. Honor killing is legal, and by law women can be hanged or stoned to death for unchaste behavior. Millions of Iranian women find ways to at least partly circumvent these restrictions, and relatively few suffer the most extreme penalties. Women vote and sit in parliament, and there are significant numbers of women both in university and at the workplace. But the fact

[LAAMN] Lay Convicted, Bush Walks By Greg Palast
Lay Convicted, Bush Walks By Greg Palast t r u t h o u t | Perspective Thursday 25 May 2006 Don't kid yourself. If you think the conviction of Ken Lay means that George W. Bush is serious about going after corporate bad guys, think again. First, Lay got away with murder - or at least grand larceny. Like Al Capone convicted of failing to file his taxes, Ken Lay, though found guilty of stock fraud, is totally off the hook for his BIG crime: taking down California and Texas consumers for billions through fraud on the power markets. Lay co-convict Jeff Skilling and Enron did not act alone. They connived with a half dozen other power companies and a dozen investment banks to manipulate both the stock market and the electricity market. And though their co-conspirators have now paid $3 billion to settle civil claims, the executives of these other corporations and banks get a walk on criminal charges. Furthermore, to protect our president's boardroom buddies from any additional discomfort, the Bush Justice Department, just days ago, indicted Milberg-Weiss, the law firm that nailed Enron's finance industry partners-in-crime. The timing of the bust of this firm - the top corporation-battling law firm - smacks of political prosecution, and is a signal to Big Business that it's business as usual. Lay and Skilling have to pay up their ill-gotten gains to Enron's stockholders, but what about the $9-plus billion owed to electricity consumers? The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Bush's electricity cops, have slapped Enron and its gang of power pirates on the wrist. Could that have something to do with the fact that Ken Lay, in secret chats with Dick Cheney, selected the Commission's chairmen? Team Bush had to throw the public a bone, so they threw us Lay and Skilling for the crime - note - not of ripping off the public, but of ripping off stockholders - the owner class. This limited conviction, and the announcement of only one more indictment - of the crime-busters at Milberg-Weiss - is Team Bush's all clear! signal for the sharks to jump back into the power pool. That leaves one question: If Bush's Justice Department let Ken and company keep the California loot, what about that state's own government? If you want to know how Californians' $9 billion went bye-bye, read on... When Ahnold Got Lay'd Peninsula Hotel, Beverly Hills. May 17, 2001. The Financial Criminal of the twentieth century, not long out of prison, meets with the Financial Criminal of the twenty-first century, who fears he may also have to do hard time. These two, bond-market manipulator Mike Millikin and Ken Lay, not-yet-indicted Chairman of Enron Corporation, were joined by a selected group of movers and shakers - and one movie star. Arnold Schwarzenegger had been to such private parties before. As a young immigrant without a nickel to his name, he put on private displays of his musculature for guests of his promoter. As with those early closed gatherings, I don't know all that went on at the Peninsula Hotel meet, though I understand Ahnold, this time, did not have to strip down to his Speedos. Nevertheless, the moral undressing was just as lascivious, if you read through the 34 page fax that arrived at our office. Lay, who convened the hugger-mugger, was in a bit of trouble. Enron and the small oligopoly of other companies that ruled California's electricity system had been caught jacking up the price of power and gas by fraud, conspiracy and manipulation. A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon it was real money - $6.3 billion in suspect windfalls in just six months, May through December 2000, for a half-dozen electricity buccaneers, at least $9 billion for the year. Their skim would have been higher, but the tricksters thought they were limited by the number of digits the state's power-buying computers could read. When Ken met Arnold in the hotel room, the games were far from over. For example, in June 2003, Reliant Corporation of Houston simply turned off several power plants, and when California cities faced going dark, the company sold them a pittance of kilowatts for more than gold, making several million in minutes. Power-market shenanigans were nothing new in 2000. What was new was the response of Governor Gray Davis. A normally quiet, if not dull, man, this Governor had the temerity to call the energy sellers pirates - in public! - and, even more radically, he asked them to give back all the ill-gotten loot, the entire $9 billion. The state filed a regulatory complaint with the federal government. The Peninsula Hotel get-together was all about how to settle the legal actions in such a way that Enron and friends could get the state to accept dog food instead of dollars. Davis seemed unlikely to see things Ken's way. Life would be so much better if California had a governor like the muscle
[LAAMN] Memorial Day Weekend: So. Central Farm, Arlington W., Watts Towers
Ed, please direct people to the IMC site for the full, updated story on the farm, plus pics, video, and audio. www.la.indymedia.org Thanks, -Anna Hi, all. Check out the story on today's LA Times' front page, and consider making a visit part of your Memorial weekend agenda. It's a rare and refreshing alternative to the usual picture of So. Central as well as a model for all parts of our city and society. Natural foods grown by cooperating neighbors, in the face of business as usual and the destruction of the earth. As Daryl Hannah says in the story it's 'a situation of the needy versus the greedy.' I'll bet you didn't know she's Haskell Wexler's niece. Good stock. PRESS RELEASE ON COURT-MARTIAL 23 MAY 2006 - for immediate release Contact: Aidan Delgado, 941.685.7941 FIRST FEMALE CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR SENTENCED FOR REFUSING DEPLOYMENT TO AFGHANISTAN FT. BENNING, GA -- Army National Guard Specialist Katherine Jashinski received a bad conduct discharge today and was sentenced to 120 days confinement after pleading guilty to the charge of refusal to obey a legal order. She was acquitted of the more serious charge of missing movement by design. With 53 days already served (on Fort Benning), and 20 days off for good behavior, Ms. Jashinski has 47 days of confinement remaining. On November 17, 2005, Jashinski made a public statement of conscientious objection on the eve of her scheduled deployment to Afghanistan. Eighteen months after filing, the Army denied her application for a discharge. She was then court-martialed for refusing to train with weapons. Jashinski¹s superiors testified that they believed in the sincerity of her CO claim, and the Judge noted that he was convinced of the same. Aidan Delgado and Camilo Mejía, members of Iraq Veterans Against the War, attended Ms. Jashinski¹s trial today to support her. They described the atmosphere of the courtroom as initially tense, but said that Jashinski¹s powerful heartfelt testimony changed the tone of the room. Iraq Veterans Against the War supports the right of every soldier to follow their conscience, said Delgado. As the first woman GI to publicly take a stand against this war and to declare herself a CO, Katherine¹s actions are very significant. She is a fine example of a young person standing up for her beliefs. Ms. Jashinski is feeling triumphant and happy to have resolution. After completing her sentence she will return to school at the University of Texas at Austin and continue her work with the newly founded Austin GI Rights Hotline. --- 3. MEDIA COVERAGE OF COURT-MARTIAL http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/mld/ledgerenquirer/news/local/14650990.htm NATIONAL GUARD CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR GETS BAD CONDUCT DISCHARGE Associated Press FORT BENNING, Ga. - An anti-war group said a National Guard cook who refused deployment to Afghanistan received a bad conduct discharge Tuesday and was sentenced to 120 days of confinement at Fort Benning. The Iraq Veterans Against the War said Spc. Katherine Jashinski, 22, of Austin, Texas, pleaded guilty to refusing to obey a legal order but was acquitted of the more serious charge of missing movement by design. A post spokeswoman, Tracy Bailey, confirmed that Jashinski received 120 days confinement but could not confirm other details. Jashinski was said to be the first female soldier to seek conscientious objector status in a stand against fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Army denied her application for a discharge as a conscientious objector, and she was court-martialed for refusing to train with weapons. The veterans group, which said it had members who attended the hearing, said that with 53 days of confinement already behind her at Fort Benning, and 20 days off for good behavior, Jashinski has 47 days remaining. She plans to return to school at the University of Texas in Austin and continue working with the newly founded Austin GI Rights Hotline, the group said.
