[LAAMN] LA Progressive Joins Same Page Coalition

2013-05-28 Thread janbtucker666
J.B. Tucker & Associates
News Release

P.O. Box 433 Torrance CA 90508-0433

Tel: 310.618.9596 Fax: 310.618.1950

Cell: 818.720.3719 p...@janbtucker.com

Criminal Justice Columnist, Counter Punch Magazine

Commentator, Black Talk Radio

"Public relations guru"--Los Angeles Times 1996

Former 1st Vice President, LA Newspaper Guild

Member, CWA Local 39521, Pacific Media Workers Guild

For Immediate Release: 5/29/13

For Information: Jan B. Tucker as above; Dick Price; Sharon Kyle

L.A. Progressive Joins Same Page Coalition

The well-respected on-line media L.A. Progressive has been unanimously
voted into the Same Page/Misma Pagina (SPC) coalition by the existing
member organizations, which include the San Fernando Valley/Northeast
Los Angeles Chapter of NOW (SFV/NELA NOW), National League of Latin
American Citizens (NLLAC), California League of Latin American Citizens
(CALLAC), United For Education Coalition (UFE), Bring Hollywood Home
Foundation (BHHF), Miss Revolutionaries, Todos Unidos, and California
LULAC Institute (CLI). Founded and operated by Dick Price and Sharon
Kyle, the L.A. Progressive has an international following and carries
posts by such celebrated writers as Dr. Anthony Samad, Marcy Winograd,
Cynthia Loo, Norman Solomon, Carl Bloice, Tom Hayden, and Victoria
DeFrancesco Soto amongst others. Biographical information for Price and
Kyle is available at
http://www.laprogressive.com/who-are-dick-and-sharon/
 .

Endorsements by the SPC are considered important prizes in Los Angeles
area elections. During the 2012 election cycle, both of SPC's
endorsees, Representative Brad Sherman and long-shot Steve Fox went on
to win their races. Running 10% ahead in the polls, Sherman sent a last
minute mailing to every Democratic and Independent registered woman in
his district touting the SFV/NELA NOW endorsement and went on to beat
his opponent, Rep. Howard Berman, by an astounding 20 points on election
night. During the 2013 Los Angeles Municipal elections, all four of the
major Mayoral candidates sought and were interviewed by SPC for
endorsement. In the runoff, with the exception of SFV/NELA NOW which
made a triple endorsement in the primary which became a runoff dual
endorsement, all other SPC endorsing groups endorsed Mayor-elect Eric
Garcetti for the runoff.

A 2006 professional poll commissioned by then-Assembly member and
current frontrunner for Los Angeles City Council District 6 Cindy
Montanez demonstrated that amongst San Fernando Valley endorsing
organizations, the voters considered the SFV/NELA NOW endorsement to
have the highest integrity. SPC attributes the credibility of their
endorsements to their strict non-partisanship (member organizations have
made past endorsements of Democrats, Republicans, independents, Greens,
and Peace & Freedom Party candidates) and conflict of interest policies
to insure that interested individuals cannot participate or must limit
participation in specific races, even based upon a mere appearance of
impropriety.

SPC is implementing two new procedures in conjunction with its
endorsement process, which has previously included a joint candidate
questionnaire (known as one of the most difficult in California because
it is completely subjective and cannot be "scored") and a face
to face interview. For upcoming elections, SPC will add an optional
on-record semi-formal press conference that candidates seeking the
endorsement will be encouraged to participate in. All media will be
invited, but an emphasis will be placed upon seeking participation from
alternative and small media outlets, such as community newspapers,
on-line publications, and ethnic/non-English language press.

Additionally, SPC is in the process of creating a chart to "hold
incumbents feet to the fire" by comparing the promises and
representations they made during the endorsement process to their
performance in office. SPC will seek periodic face to face meetings
with the soon to be incumbents to review their efforts to implement
their promises and to help build public support for the reforms they
have demanded.

To see the SPC's existing candidate questionnaire and background
documents, see http://www.sfvnow.org/blank.html

relevant about the issuesand my views that with the exception of
NLLAC/CALLAC, the left has largely abandoned any radical questioning of
the legitimacy of the border or the relevance of the Treaty of Guadalupe
Hidalgo to the debate.

[LAAMN] Peace, Freedom Party starts a Purge

2012-12-22 Thread janbtucker666
Following the best publicity the Peace & Freedom Party has enjoyed since
it's founding with its nomination of Roseanne Barr for President, the
party has resumed its usual fratricidal warfare with the current Chair,
Kevin D. Akin, presiding over a farcical purge proceeding against a
former Chair, Irv Sutley (1970-72) who served when PFP was a serious
organization with a serious and credible structure. Also exposed is the
simmering dispute between Roseanne Barr and her running mate, Cindy
Sheehan.

[LAAMN] Alzheimer's research & the Federal Budget

2012-12-06 Thread janbtucker666
How much does it cost to bring an Alzheimer's treatment to market?

What kind of research is going on in publicly funded Alzheimer's
projects?

What is the critical role of the federal government's National
Alzheimer's Coordinating Center?

What kind of financial hit will Alzheimer's research take if the federal
budget cuts take automatic effect on the National Institute for
Aging/National Institute for Health?

The answers:

[LAAMN] Merv Dymally: An Objective Obituary

2012-10-08 Thread janbtucker666
http://janbtucker.com/blog/2012/10/08/mervyn-dymally-the-good-the-bad-the-ugly/

Merv Dymally: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Wikipedia says of Mervyn M. Dymally:

Mervyn Malcolm Dymally (May 12, 1926 – October 7, 2012) was a California
Democratic politician. He served in the California State Assembly (1963–1966)
and the California State Senate (1967–1975), as the 41st Lieutenant Governor of
California (1975–1979), and in the U.S. House of Representatives (1981–1993).
Dymally returned to politics a decade later to serve in the California State
Assembly (2002–2008).

Dymally, of mixed Indian and Afro-Trinidadian heritage, was the first
Trinidadian to serve California as State Senator and Lieutenant Governor. He
was one of the first persons of African and Indian origin to serve in the U.S.
Congress. In 1974 he and George L. Brown became the first two blacks elected to
statewide office since Oscar Dunn did so during Reconstruction.

Mervyn Malcolm Dymally, Legislator, Congressman, Lieutenant Governor of
California and…… lobbyist

Merv Dymally to be sure, did some great things in his career and when I use the
term great it is neither hyperbole, exaggeration, or an attempt to be polite to
the deceased. His career was a mixed bag and you will not see in print or
anywhere else in his obituaries some of the issues I'm going to raise here. I
have a unique perspective about Merv because I ran against him in 1978 for
Lieutenant Governor on the California Peace & Freedom Party ticket and I also
assisted my old friend Carl E. Robinson, former President of the Compton
Community College Board of Trustees to litigate against a power grab
orchestrated by Dymally which set the precedent for what the Michigan
Republican Party would later be accused of doing to predominantly African
American cities throughout that state.

1974: A Historic Election and a Historic Debate

John L. Harmer

One thing you've got to give to Merv: he was one of the savviest politicians
who ever worked in the State of California. Merv and Alan Cranston both knew
one important fact about the mechanics of debates. Most politicians,
especially incumbents, shun the thought of being on a stage with third party
candidates included. Merv and Alan (whose Deputy Campaign manager was a Peace
& Freedom Party member in his re-election campaign against Republican Paul
Gann; not to mention that Cranston started his political career in Henry
Wallaces Independent Progressive Party) understood that if you have a Peace &
Freedom Party candidate in the race during a debate, the PFP nominee would
invariably make the Democratic candidate look like a moderate surrounded by the
Republican extremist on the right and the PFP on the left.

In 1974, this played out perfectly for Merv when, during the PBS debate, he was
flanked by appointed Republican Lieutenant Governor and former State Senator
John Harmer (appointed by Governor Ronald Reagan to replace Edwin Reinecke
who'd been tainted by the Watergate scandal) and PFP Candidate (later my
Gubernatorial running mate in 1978, the first open Lesbian to run for statewide
office in California) Marilyn Seals. Harmer, a Morman, had been doing a
tremendous job of attacking Merv's record in the legislature, going bill and
bill that Merv had introduced and spinning them as bad legislation. Then,
Harmer went even further, characterizing Dymally as having a "socialistic
voting record."

Marilyn countered in her closing statement that the problem with Dymally was
that he did not have a socialistic voting record and went on to support
Feminist-Socialism over liberalism. To understand what then transpired, you
have to understand that Lieutenant Governor Harmer was a right wing fanatic.
An October 23, 1972 Time Magazine article discussed Harmer authored California
Proposition 18 on the November 1972 ballot, which was so extreme that
Republicans Clint Eastwood and even John Wayne campaigned against it:

As drafted by State Senator John Harmer, a Mormon and a Republican,
Proposition 18 leaves no doubt as to what is considered obscene: any display in
public of adult genitals, buttocks or female nipples; any explicit show of
"sexual excitement," "sexual conduct" or "sadomasochistic abuse." Obscene words
may not be used if they are descriptive, only if they are exclamations of shock
or anger. Thus the dialogue of Andy Warhol movies would be forbidden, but
George C. Scott could get away with his expletives in Patton.

Printed matter without pictures is left alone, but even that is vulnerable
to attack. As sweeping as the initiative is, it also allows local communities
to add to the law if they want to. Private citizens, if they are so inclined,
are permitted to make citizen's arrests of pornographers and confiscate
materials, though they face the risk of a civil suit if they go too far. An
aide to Senator Harmer explains: "As a practical matter, we think the
initi

[LAAMN] Chicano Studies Fundraiser

2011-11-27 Thread janbtucker666
When
Monday, December 5, 2011
Time
6:00pm until 9:30pm
Description

From Dr. Rudy Acuna:
When Your Education is Under Attack

"What do you do?" "Fight back!"

On Monday, December 5, from 6 PM to 9:30 PM, a fundraiser will be held for
the Tucson Unified School District's Mexican American Studies program at the
Northridge Hall at the Student Union of California State University Northridge.
It is important that we as a community show our support. Our special guest will
be the Sean Arce, the coordinator of the program, who has borne the brunt of
the attacks of right wing zealots and special interests such as the Southern
Arizona Leadership Council, the Tea Party and bought politicos such as Tom
Horne and John Huppenthal.

It has been a particularly intense struggle and through the budget the
Tucson program has dwindled to a fraction of what it was two years ago. The
federal government has allowed the State of Arizona to nullify its laws and
single out Mexican Americans and Latinos to discriminate against them.

Like in every civil rights struggle the state has deep pockets and
outspends the plaintiffs a hundred fold. The media is hostile, captives of
special interests. In the case of Tucson, it is the white business community
led by the SALC that controls local officials and institutions.

SALC controls the University of Arizona that just signed a football coach
to a $9 million plus contract, at a time that the university is raising tuition
and cutting back academic programs. Arizona is near dead last in the per capita
spending per child and the educational system is a disgrace. The TUSD Mexican
American Studies program was an exception and doing something about the
horrendous dropout problem. Students wanted to learn.

But in Arizona it is a crime to learn about Mexican American culture. It is
a crime for Latinos to get an education. Charlatans such as former chair of the
TUSD Board of Trustees Mark Stegeman say that Mexican Americans who employ the
farm worker hand clap belong to a cult and that the use of term la raza is
equivalent to Deutschland über alles.

Sean and his fellow teachers have been called racist, separatists, and
assaulted while the media turns the other way and fails to check these lie

The hardest part of the struggle is the stress on one's family and
relationships. Friends find ways to avoid you. It is a feeling similar to what
cancer patients have described to me. The victim is blamed.

Then there are the egos that tear at the little headway you make. You
understand how Sisyphus felt, rolling the immense boulder up a hill, only to
watch it roll back down. Egos are the worse enemy, people who normally share
your goals but rationalize their behavior and distort reality.

Lastly, there are the mistakes you and your cohorts make. You can't take
them back and must go forward lest the boulder run you over.

December 5th will honor this struggle; it is our opportunity to fight back!

It is being sponsored by CSUN MEChA and the Asian American students. The
entertainment will blend both cultures. It is especially appropriate that the
Asian American community be present since the Japanese American community was
singled out and over 100,000 were sent to internment camps. They know the
consequences of xenophobia.

December 5th will also honor the big guy, Sean Arce, who has not given up
and has willed the struggle. Arce, the other defendants, the community and the
students have fought against all odds. We should be at the event to let him and
all the Tucsonenses know that they are not alone and that we will be with them
til the end.

We shall endure. We have no other choice but to fight back!

Please order your tickets or come without them. $5 for students and $10 for
others. No one will be turned away. Call 1-818-677-2739 leave a message or
email me. If you want to make donation via PayPal go to
http://saveethnicstudies.org/ and punch the "donate" button on the upper right
side.
