I viewed this book at Kate's house today -- it really is wonderful. The

Printed out the calendar (once everything was out in the open) in
several copies, and propose to get help from my 3 step-granddaughters
tomorrow (they're arriving tonight). Putting the jig-saw puzzle
together ought to keep them occupied for a spell, while I'm fixin'
their supper and their father is having his pre-prandial drink :)

Where I did have a problem was in printing the thing out; the first 20
days printed out like a dream, but the last 4 days obstinately refused
to. And, naturally, one of the pics in the last row of 4 had a piece of
the puzzle... I finally managed to get that piece printed out but, as
it went through a different "route", it's also a different size... One
could easily learn to hate 'puters :)

[lace] Reference book - Caulfeild & Saward

2004-12-29 Thread Jeriames
Dear Lacemakers,

It seems to me we discussed aficots a couple times in the past, reminding
that I could give you a reference book recommendation that would be helpful
with
such things. I have a copy on each side of my library - with lace books and
with embroidery books. The book I am referring to is the same but In two
different formats.

Authors: S.F.A. Caulfeild & B.C. Saward

"The Dictionary of Needlework" published as a facsimile editon of the 2nd
edition of a book by the same name published in London in 1885. My 528-page
hardback edition was published by Blaketon Hall Limited in 1989, ISBN
0-907854-10-9, original cost 35 pounds; I paid $28 for a used copy. This is a
large,
thick book.

"Encyclopedia of Victorian Needlework (Dictionary of Needlework)" is a 1972
Dover reprint in two softcover volumes from Dover. Vol. 1 covers A-L, 330
pages; Vol. 2 covers M-Z; continues to page 697. ISBN 0-486-22800-2 and
0-486-22801-0. These came in as a used set.

A vast number of entries focused on artistic, plain, and fancy needlework -
with many photos and drawings - it is "Dedicated to Her Royal Highness The
Princess Louise, Marchioness of Lorne, this book is by her special permission,
Dedicated, In Acknowledgment of the Great Services which, by Means of Her
Cultivated Taste and Cordial Patronage, She has Rendered to the Arts of Plain
Sewing
and Embroidery." Whew!

Do not confuse Princess Louise with Princess Christian, who - with Lady
Marian Alford - established the Royal School of Needlework in 1872. It is
quite
obvious that the Royals were very dedicated to needlework (there are several
portraits of Queen Victoria showing her with needlework in her hands).

TESS: I'll bring these to you so you can determine if they should be on the
Professor's site. Then, the challenge will be to get a volume that is older
to scan!

This reference material is useful when reading a 19th C. (1800's) book or
magazine and you do not understand a word or term. There are many lace
entries.
For lace collectors and those interested in older books, history, etc. - look
for this book in used book stores and similar venues. Do not be put off
because "lace" is not in the title. Take a look. If it is not your cup of
tea,
your lace club might find it useful.

[lace] Christmas presents

2004-12-29 Thread Sally Schoenberg
I gave something to Salvation Army, our local charity that collects and
sells things at low prices. Some years ago I got 12 pair of bobbins in the
mail from someone in France, he never charged me for them even though I
tried repeatedly to pay for them, and I can't add any to them. They are
unique. So I gave them with some incomplete spools of thread, an OIDFA and
a Bulletin that both have lots of websites in them, to Salvation Army. It's
just enough for an enterprising beginnner. I wonder if I'll ever see them
again!

There are lots of people in Alaska who remember well the 1964 tsumamis that
washed up on our shores. Everyone is talking about it and remembering. We
are all so sorry to see Asia's suffering. The photos of the waves are
fascinating. The risk for us is always there, and we talk about what we
would do if there were a tsumami. But sometimes we are on a shore that is
away from the warning system and we've always wondered what a tsumami looks
like.

[lace] Lace gifts for Christmas...

2004-12-29 Thread Westland District Library
A friend who shares my interests in lace and dolls sent me a delightful
bobbin with the base shaped and painted like a Russian 'nesting' doll
(matryoshka?), as well as a thimble and a cross-stitch card to make, both
with lacemaker designs - and the kit for the angel/choirboy shown on the
Lace Guild's advent calendar. My sister sent a ball of Goldfingering in a
sparkly snow-white that I haven't seen before... so now I have lots to do
on these wet, wet, wet holidays! (Summer?! Bah, humbug!)

And my husband gave me a new radio, which picks up the national classical
programme that has recently become available locally... something to listen
to, while I make lace! I gave him a set of miniature chisels, as the
bobbins he has turned so far have been made with ordinary chisels, and he
has realised that the work could be easier with appropriate tools...

Happy New Year to all, and special thoughts to those still waiting for news
of loved ones in South East Asia...

[lace] RE: [lace-chat] Thailand

2004-12-29 Thread Angel Skubic
We tracked down Stan, a fellow on our plumeria list, who lives in the
Philippines via cell phone. When the disaster happened, and we started
tracking down members, someone had an email from Stan. It stated that he
was going to the "highlands" for Christmas, and had his cell phone # in
it. The email was reposted and some enterprising individual called him.
He was in Papua. (and safe) So any attempt to get in touch with these
people by anyone who has the means is greatly appreciated by all. I only
wish we had a way to contact Anucha. I am worrying a lot too obviously.
I would like to hear that all the members on all our lists have been
found safe and sound.

Dear friends,

I have had some good news, my cousin a priest spending Christmas in
Thailand
is safe, I finally found out today, likewise a nephew who lives there,
but
was Home in England for Christmas, so also safe, but a couple, one a
lace
friend and her husband are not due home until 31st. so I have no way of
knowing if they are safe, they left early December to spend Christmas in
Thailand.

I also received more bad news as well as the husband of a friend who
died on
the 23rd. close friends of mine in this country, the husband died on
Christmas morning, it is always heartbreaking to hear, but more so at
this
time of year.

I have E-mailed Sulochona to see if she is okay, but unsure if she has a
laptop, I know she was taking her lace with her.

As Jean Nathan said we cannot complain about the coverage of the
disaster in
England, SKY is on 24 hours, with phone numbers etc; for any help
families
may need, though the lines were over loaded initially with people also
trying to find out about their holiday bookings as well, but I think
they
said they have got the number down to 600 calls per hour of enquiries of
people, giving a separate number for holidays I assume. Also along the
bottom of the screen, SKY have run text messages, from holiday makers
saying
they are safe, which I am sure has been a comfort to friends whom are
worrying.

How tragic for Lord Attenborough The film maker/director and his wife,
to
lose their daughter and 15 year old granddaughter, and the daughter's
M.I.L,
words cannot convey the sadness when half a family is lost, we can only
pray
for them, and for the lucky ones to have survived, and help personally
financially however small, where we can, there are phone lines set up
for
donations already. If anyone requires the telephone number to donate by
credit card it is Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC).0870 60 60 900 in
the
UK of course, and by E-mail it is www.dec.org.uk.

I believe that this is the tool made of horn that was used to polish needle
lace. It is shaped a bit like a shoe horn. The Lace Museum has several on
display.

[lace] Christmas gifts

2004-12-29 Thread Chris Vail
Truthfully, my lace gift has been to take a break from
lace for a while :) Other than some quickie crochet
ornaments back in November I haven't done anything
lace related. I'm hoping the mental break will help
me find a focus - I've had so many 'If Only' ideas
running through my head that I can't get any one to
the point of doing. So I'm finishing off some old
projects, clearing up the random piles of sweater
sleeves and half-done socks, freeing needles and
putting bobbins away. I hope to have a project to
start at the end of the week - New Year's Day seems
appropriate for new works.

Other than that, my hubby and I swore off gift giving
this year. As hideously corny as it sounds, we're
happy enough with each other that we didn't feel the
need for anything more, and not stressing out over
gifts was a gift itself (we tend to get what we
need/want as it comes up, not wait for once or twice a
year, so there's not much to give each other). It's
strange to many or our friends, but it worked for us.
A very happy Christmas was had :D

Chris :)

Re: [lace] aficot?

2004-12-29 Thread Jean Barrett
Good morning Jo, Clay, Tamara and All,
Lenka advised us at the workshop I took with her to flatten the
finished wire piece using a rolling pin as you mentioned Tamara. The
lace and the pin are protected with a piece of kitchen paper. However
these pieces of lace had the beads added afterwards. You cannot
flatten beads in this way. The Aficot is a sort of long, shallow 's'
shape with one end carved to a point and the other quite bulbous which
fits in the palm of your hand so that you can exert pressure on the
other end. As Clay said they are used to 'finish' needle lace. Lobster
claws were said to be the original of the design. I used kitchen paper
to protect things. Although the rolling does flatten the wires it also
hardens them and the lace becomes stiffer. Its worth doing to a small
piece to see if you like the effect.
