Vivienne>>

Back in the days when we had a Hobbycraft in Wimbledon (before it killed off
our local suppliers and before it went too) I was in there buying some
sewing thread and thought I'd look at their new promotion - lace equipment -
what
I found was the entire stock of SMP with their name taken off - the pillows
where it had SMP molded into the pillow had been scrubbed off. They, just as
Vivienne found, 3 to 4 times the price.

What I believe happened is that the middle man had added their cut to get
the things from SMP and then Hobbycraft had put their profit on them. And
Hobbycraft wondered why they just weren't selling a £4 pillow at £18

No kiddin'! :) When I was still in my doll-house (1:12 scale) mode
(pre-lace), it was cheaper for me to buy a set of 15-or-so, all
different sizes, but all less-than-1/16" *drill bits*, than to buy a
20-hole gauge (a piece of plastic with pre-drilled, identified as to
size, holes)...

1/16" drill bit is the smallest size available at Walmart (my personal
gauge for "commonly available") as a single bit. Anything smaller than
that has to be bought in sets, from specialised sources (not Walmart),
at a much higher price per bit. But, high as that price might be, it's
*still* lower than the price of the less-that 1/16" *holes*

[lace] tatting needles

2005-05-27 Thread Lynn Carpenter
I am primarily a shuttle tatter, but have recently become a "knitter in
miniature". In my quest for cheap, available thin knitting needles, I came
across doll needles sold by Dritz. They work quite well and "feel" to be
the same as my #5-0 tatting needle. (I bought a set of tatting needles
years ago so I could say I had tried needle tatting.)

Then I found a company online called "Havel's" (www.havelssewing.com) that
sells a set of graduated tatting needles, #3-0, #4-0, #5-0, #6-0, #7 and
#8, for 7 USD.

I asked on my historic knitting list if anyone knew if these might be
equivalent to the 3-0 (and so on) knitting needle sizes. I already have
the 3-0/5-0/7 set -- that would give me pairs, and having learned to knit
tubes on two needles ("double knitting", or whatever you name it), I could
make *even smaller* Christmas stockings than the ones I made last year on
000 needles. Smaller, smaller, smaller -- soon I will need to use my
microscope to see what I'm doing.

It is a giggle to me that lace needle gauges are so expensive compared to
"regular" knitting needle gauges. Smaller holes are apparently much more
expensive than big ones! :)

A few years ago I was talked into providing Groves and Banks with lace stuff
for a "Hobby Craft" type dtore, it was near Milton Keynes. I can't remember
the name now. Any way my sisiters live in Northampton so we called in on the
way
to them. I was amazed at the prices they were charging for my stuff. Well
over 3 times for some of it. Our Multi tool we now, years on. charge £12.50
for
they were, then, charging £25.00 for. Any way we stopped selling them stuff.
Shops, no help now but we are in the proccess of moving into a business unit,
Keel Court. We will be open two days a week, Wednesday and Thursday, to the
public and other days by arrangement as we will usually be there doing orders.
We
are very excited but also a bit nervouse on our new adventure,

I think, when we went to Chester a couple of years ago, I remember
coming across a needlework shop in the centre. Unfortunately, Hobbycraft
has killed off most of the smaller craft shops (including the one where
I taught lace for the last 10.5 years - it closed a couple of weeks ago,
the class is moving to the library, with a change of day, starting the
Friday after our Lace Day (a week tomorrow!) - not exactly easy when you
need to do the last minute organising and the class is fragmented!

If you look up DMC's main site for the UK, hopefully they will give a
listing of stockists - or maybe, links. Also look at the Lace Guild's
suppliers page (www.laceguild.org) - I'm not sure whether Church Meadow
Craft's shop (at a craft centre, can't remember which offhand, but it is
up in the Chester direction) is a possibility (they will be one of our
suppliers, and David will be giving a talk, at next year's lace day).

Or do a search with "craft shops" + Chester Cheshire as the requirements
(senior moment - the correct word has gone!. Not doing very well
tonight, am I!)

But don't expect to find anything in the way of lacemaking materials - they
sell the UK version of the 'horror kit' and that's just about it. They do

dried flower arranging, and that kind of thing.

I think they're completely useless, but I still manage to spend GBP30 or 40
each time I go there!

Re: [lace] lace course

2005-05-27 Thread Antje González
Hello Magda again,

As I see that you don't mind coming to Spain, I suggest you to take a course
with Mariña Regueiro. This is her web site: http://escueladeencajes.com . (I
suppose there is an e mail address there. If not, please let me know it, and
I will give it to you). I have taken 4 different courses with her, and I
think she is just fantastic. She is a very nice and polite person (speeks
English very well), and she is an excellent teacher. She teaches different
types of lace, how to draw patterns, how to start and end laces...
I would suggest you to take the course on Hinojosa lace or Witch stitch: a
tape lace with some characteristics of Milanese. It is very old and is is
made only in some local places of Spain, possibly brought from Italy by a
lacer and developped its own way afterwards.
Also typical Spanish would be to try the Spanish Blonde, made in very fine
silk.
Mariña teaches in the summer in the north of Spain, Pontevedra, where you
could also visit Camariñas and the area, where bobbin lace is still made by
the local lacers and has a great tradition.

Anyway, Carolina's suggestion of a course on Catalan blonde is also very
tempting. I only tell you about the courses I know.

Good luck on your election.

Many greetings from
Antje González, in Guadalajara, Spain

[lace] Lace happenings in June in London/Chester?

2005-05-27 Thread Ian & Chelle Long
Gidday all,

I will be accompanying my DH on a business trip to England from 19-30 June -
I've never been to Europe before so am pretty excited. I'll be doing my own
thing during the day while he is working - in London for a week then a
couple of days in Chester, so if there are any lace
days/workshops/exhibitions that I could get to by train in those areas
during those times please contact me privately.
Also if there are any good craft shops in central London or in Chester I'd
appreciate details of those too please. I am stuck in a lace/craft
wilderness here in Suriname so I intend to make the most of the buying
opportunity!
