Good for you, Alice! That's a great article.

I love the lace on the pillow - I've seen that pattern before, and it's
one I've always wanted to do.

I'm glad you take time to make your DH lunch :-)

Cheers,

[lace] Demonstrating/television

2006-08-07 Thread Janice Blair
On Saturday and Sunday six of the Land of Lincoln Lacemakers in Illinois did a
demonstration on behalf of the Illinois Arts Council. We had a great time,
made even more pleasant in that we were paid to demonstrate, plus our meals,
travel and hotel were paid for by the Arts Council. Everything was so well
organised even down to the large cooler containing bottled water by our canopy
which was greatly appreciated as we worked in the sun and heat. With six
present, we were able to enjoy seeing the delights of Bishop Hill, a village
that was originally a Swedish communal settlement, along with viewing the other
exhibitors work and listening to the many folk singers that performed in the
main stage area. The lacemakers were required to speak on the Narrative stage
and demonstrate on another stage whilst answering questions, plus we also had
pillows set up for our time slot in the childrens area. The talks were for a
lot longer than we thought but our members put on a good
 show.

Saturday was glorious weather but Sunday started with a thunderstorm. Most
of the other exhibitors set up their displays in various indoor venues but as
soon as the rain had passed we set up our lace exhibits and sales table back in
the park. As there was little to see in the park we became the main attraction
and a magnet for the many tv cameras that came by. The Illinois Arts Council
was making a documentary movie and Arachne, Sylvie Nyguen became our
spokesperson and did a great job for the interview. We were all hard pressed
to keep quiet whilst she answered the very intelligent questions of the
camerman. He then came to each of us in turn and asked about our lace. We
were making a variety of laces on different types of pillows. Arachne Diane
Williams was working Ipswich lace on a bolster pillow. I was doing a Jean
Leader circular Beds rose design from her new booklet using lots of bobbins.
Others were doing Russian, Torchon, yardage or tape laces We
overheard a tv group from WTTW, the Chicago public broadcasting station, ask
for use of his footage so we might see ourselves on their programming at some
time in the future.

After I got home I had a call from Diane to say that she had seen me featured
on the CBS Channel 4 station from the Quad Cities. I am out of that area so
did not see it. It seems they opened with a close up shot of a Beds design of
mine which filled the tv screen and then showed Brenda Glenn and I working at
our pillows. If you want to see that design you will have to come to the IOLI
convention in 2008! I think Brenda and I were the only ones manning the table
when the Channel 4 camerwoman came by. I showed her my prize winning table
ribbon, Ribbon du Vin, but she had packed her camera up by then. The ribbon
was closely filmed by the Arts Council guy but I am not sure if and when that
footage will be seen. We are all hoping that we are asked back again when the
folk festival is being held in Illinois in 3 years time. We exposed hundreds
of people to lacemaking and never once had a visit from the tatting lady.
Maybe everyone should ask their state arts councils
if they need demonstrators, it might be a good opportunity to further the
cause of lace.

2006-08-07 Thread Helen
I never realised that other painters had ever included a lacemaker in
their work! :o) It's certainly easier to see what she's doing than
in the Vermeer painting and has the advantage of looking more modern
and less frilly-lacy (which isn't my scene!)

Re: [lace] late reply on dealing with the heat

2006-08-07 Thread Shere'e

One of the tricks I do is to slip
frozen tubes of water down my cleavage. It really works well.

To do this I get florist tubes like what you see on the end of a
single rose at the grocery store. I usually get the largest size that
they have. Some of them for fresh greenery can be as large as 1/4 cup
capasity. I fill them up about 3/4 of the way and put them upright in
my freezer. When they are frozen I will put the little rubber cap on
top and store them away. I then slip one down my front for a while.

It works for very a good reason. Your heart is actually in the
center of your chest. All your blood goes through your heart. By
cooling down the blood as it enters/exits your heart it sends slightly
cooler blood to your extremities. I find that it works really well. I
can very easily perform in 80-90 degree weather in a 47 lb velvet and brocade
dress for 12-16 hours.

I am more than willing to help and have written privately to Sue, asking her
friend to e-mail me directly so that I can subscribe her myself. She did not
write to the moderator address; I've been checking that account regularly.

It's quiet in the Jerusalem area; the war zones are north and south but the
center is calm at the moment. Our company has closed its small Haifa branch
temporarily and moved the employees and their families to hotels in Jerusalem
(paid for by the company) for the duration of the war. Some of my coworkers have
received emergency call-up orders, so I'm very busy at work covering for them. I
plan to be around the rest of the summer because there aren't many places left
in the country that are safe and the hotels are very full these days. I'm also
busy planning my son's bar mitzvah in October!

Best wishes,

There is an alternative to deleting everything under
the message. You can put the word -end- on
the next line and majordomo will stop there and not
see anything after it. I do that, then don't have to
worry about my computer adding anything at the bottom.

Yes, the subscription process is automated.

You don't need to put anything in the subject line, and you should not
have anything else but the following line in the body of the message:

Make sure your friend has spelled the majordomo address correctly. I
recently unsubbed, and subbed again - but misspelled 'majordomo' at

[lace] late reply on dealing with the heat

2006-08-07 Thread the Mouzons
I must admit, when I read the requests about the heat, I was stumped for
awhile. Living in a hot and humid location, I had to actually think
about how we deal with the heat. Someone else was right when they said
that most of us have air-conditioning. Not just our homes, but our cars
and our shopping malls, churches, schools, etc. etc. Not that the air
conditioning always works, mind you!

We have learned that when we are outdoors (and no where around the
climate controlled environment we have grown too accustomed to) the
best way to stay cool is to keep the body hydrated. Thus, we consume
tons of iced tea!! The sweeter the tea, the farther into the Deep South
you are. At least it used to be that way. Now my family drinks more
cold water than tea. Add a slice of lemon or lime and it is just a
little more special.

You can also try washing your hair, and letting it air dry, or putting
your feet in a tub of cold water while fanning yourself. Since you
can't do much else while enjoying that method, at least put on some
soothing music. If you have an electric fan, then while your feet cool
you down, make lace!

2006-08-07 Thread the Mouzons

Hi Alice!!

Thank you for posting the article! Just over 20 years ago, we (my 6
year old daughter and I) became the subject of interest of a local
newpaper writer because we demonstrated at a local craft show (in middle
Georgia) that attracted national attention (the show...we were new
additions). He had come in and watched Erin making lace on her own
little pillow, and wanted to do an article on us. His writing was very
folksy in style and the article was wonderful. The experience is still
unforgettable. You will have many people admiring your work for years
to come as a result of this, and who knows what kind of additions to the
lacemaking world will be made as a result.

Again, thanks for sharing the article with us and also for being such a
wonderful representative of lacemaking in general. I always enjoy
reading your posts to this list. The article you shared could not have
been so well done had the subject been less knowledgeable!

[lace] Arachnes living and holidaying in Dorset

2006-08-07 Thread Elizabeth Pass
Hello ,

The Poole Arachnes ( me, Beryl, who lurks, and Jean Nathan) and Jane are
meeting up tomorrow (8th Aug) at the Dorset Arts and Crafts Show,
Bovington Middle School, not far from Wool and Monkey World. If anyone is
in the vicinity we'd love to meet you in person. (Not everyone on the list
can afford time or money to go to Prague and IOLI, more's the pity.)

The website is here:

Full details can be found at http://www.dorsetartsandcrafts.org/ although
not everything has been updated.

The show was established in the early 20th century and this year is the
92nd exhibition (suspended during the war years). There are classes for all
kinds of crafts as well as Fine Art and Photography. There is even a
section for traditional Dorset crafts - buttons, bonnets, smocks and Dorset
featherstitch.

There are also sales - it's the time to buy those special presents (unique
work), as well as books and general needlework and patchwork supplies. The
exhibition is well worth seeing; refreshments usually delicious; and many
crafts people demonstrating. I will be there myself on the 8th,
demonstrating bobbin lace.

Jo,

Something not lacey at but definately worth doing is the London Eye -
and it's good in the autumn, as central London has such a lot of trees
that in summer you get to see lots of green but not into the gardens of
No 10 Downing St or Buckingham Palace, which when the leaves have
fallen you can.

Also if the weather is good, and your feet need a rest then the open
top tour buses are good - they usually have very good and knowledgeable
commentaries.

Hope you enjoy London.
