Re: [lace] Broomsticks?

2008-07-11 Thread Lorri Ferguson
I am not sure how large/small the broom stick needs to be, but my first
thoughts are starting with a chop stick or meat skewer. Cut to length and add
a few grass or raffia wisps to the end.
Do show us a picture when it is finished.

I have just finished the Presencia witch pattern and it was such fun to
make. Vivienne suggests adding a broomstick which I would like to make.
Anybody got any ideas on how to make a tiny broomstick?

[lace] My broomstick

I have succeeded in making a broomstick with a cut down kebab stick painted
dark brown and some straw that I had left over from when I made my Honiton
pillow. Now if the pesky thing would just stop flying around the room I could
take a photo of it.

Hi Ann

Congratulations on getting your broomstick done and the witch fly.
Just lucky it'll be a cloudy night, were it a full moon, she'd be out of
the window, and then we'd never get to see a photo.

[lace] thread assistance please

2008-07-11 Thread Jenny Brandis
Hi there, I have the morning to myself and have decided to have a go at a
pattern that has been calling to me. BUT it is in German and I am trying to
work out which thread would be best

The pricking calls for

Kleines Motiv in Halbschlag
6 Paare, Leinen 60/3
(Beine: je 3 Paare)

Now I am guessing it means 6 pairs for the main body plus 3 pairs per leg
(it is a lizard)
Again a guess it is in linen 60/3 but which one!!

Brenda's book lists the following linen as 60/3

Bockens Knyppelgarn (Swedish) at 23 wpc
Campbell Linen (Irish) at 22 wpc
Fresia Linen (Belgian) at 19 wpc

So again I am guessing - as it is written in German it is either the Swedish
or the Belgian thread. But which one?

Is it in a book? They may have a section at the beginning or end where
they list which threads they were using for each size... my Brigitte Bellon
christmas book is like that.

Thanks,

Not plus, at least according to my dictionary; 6 pairs (legs: always
3 pairs)

It's been my experience that, whenever linen (without a brand) is
mentioned in the European books, chances are that Bockens is the one
used, especially in odd sizes. It seems to be the most common/easily
available brand... But, as Amanda pointed out, quite often there'll be
a note of what had been used, somewhere near the beginning of the book.
Worth checking for it.

2008-07-11 Thread bevw
If the pattern is all in half-stitch, you could try any equivalent you have
on hand to 'a' linen 60/3 (take your pick of wraps from the 3 choices);
half-stitch is accommodating. It can squinch tight or open broadly, as long
as there are at least three pairs to traverse the space.

This is what I would say as well, but, Jenny, can you tell us from which
book it is? May be I have it and can see what I find.

It was loose in a folder so I had not looked - but on the inside fold is

Leinengardne:
Bockerns Knyppelgarn
Weiss oder ecru 60/3
Farbig 35/2 (entspricht 50/3)

Thank you Tamara, Amanda and Bev!!

2008-07-11 Thread Linda Bill Mitchell

Received from DD - enjoy!

Subject: lightbulb lists

Q: How many internet mail list subscribers does it take to change
  a light bulb?
A: 1,393:

1 to change the light bulb and to post to the mail list that the
 light bulb has been changed...
14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how
the light bulb could have been changed differently,
4 to complain that they were happy with the old one,
7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs,
27 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing
  light bulbs,
53 to flame the spell checkers,
156 to write to the list administrator complaining about the
light bulb discussion and its inappropriateness to this mail
   list,
41 to correct spelling in the spelling/grammar flames,
109 to post that this list is not about light bulbs and to please
take this email exchange to alt.lite.bulb,
203 to demand that cross posting to alt.grammar, alt.spelling and
alt.punctuation about changing light bulbs be stopped,
111 to defend the posting to this list saying that we all use
light bulbs and therefore the posts **are** relevant to this
   mail list,
306 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior,
where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs
work best for this technique, and what brands are faulty,
27 to post URLs where one can see examples of different light
  bulbs,
14 to post that the URLs were posted incorrectly, and to post
  corrected URLs,
12 to flame the AOL users for violating netiquette and blame them
  for starting this whole thing,
3 to post about links they found from the URLs that are relevant
to this list, which makes light bulbs relevant to this list,
45 posts about whether or not AOL should even be allowed to
  exist,
33 to concatenate all posts to date, then quote them including

all headers and footers, and then add Me Too,
12 to post to the list that they are unsubscribing because they
cannot handle the light bulb controversy,
19 to quote the Me Too's to say, Me Three,
4 to suggest that posters request the light bulb FAQ,
1 to propose new alt.change.lite.bulb newsgroup,

47 to say this is just what alt.physic.cold_fusion was meant for,
  leave it here,
143 votes for alt.lite.bulb.
