2009-04-16 Thread David in Ballarat

Dear Clay - who's waiting for the postman

I've just seen the latest update from Julian, and your mat is
growing by leaps and bounds!!! My dear man - how DO you do
it??? Specifically, how can you work so many hours at a time and
not have your back just scream and seize with pain??

I count myself lucky that in all my years of nursing I never once
felt a twinge in my back. HOWEVER, only 2 weeks ago I did pull
something in the sacral region but it's slowly improving. I can at
least take my shoes off now.

When it comes to lace making I would no doubt be rapped over the
knuckles by most teachers. For I tend to sit very low down (on my
couch) and lean forward over the lace desk. Somehow or other there;s
no trouble with spinal aches. I did find that when I sit at a
normal height my back got tired. Of course I have a very bright
halogen lamp to help - not to mention the magnifiers :)

Hi Everyone

Thank-you all for your praise. The patterns are my own design. They were
sold within Poole Bobbin Lace Circle with the profits going to our
nominated charity for this year. I made a decision not to make up any
further pattern packs as I thought that everyone who wanted one had had
the opportunity to buy one, however they had only been offered to those
who came to our meetings.

The lace is attached as it is worked with sewings to the bangle.

As far as lace is concerned, it would have to be Lace-A History -

Apart from that: Daniel Quinn if they give you lined paper - write

[lace] Birthdays, pins, arthritis wow!

2009-04-16 Thread viv . lace
Dear Friends
I know I joined the list in 2000. I found out about it from
Jacqui Southworth who taught me bobbin lace through her brilliant beginners
book.

I know I've met 4 of you in person (please accept my apologies to those
I've met, but haven't remembered as fellow arachnids!) but there are many
others of you (firstly Tamara, who responded so well to my first ever question
about the glove hankie) who I talk of as friends without having met you.

I
feel a little guilty because I've mostly lurked except when I have a question.
The answers have always come - thank you to all of you.

On pins. Except when
making Honiton (whose pins seem to have bigger heads) I use Thimble Its to
protect my fingers. Would these help Jacquie's friend with eczema - perhaps to
give extra padding under the gloves she has to wear?

On arthritis. Jean,
thank you for your cheerful posting. I so agree it's about making the lace
that's fun. I have a scrapbook with loads of big pieces that aren't finished
because I didn't want to (the Bridget Cook Buck's point fan pattern that was
hard to decipher springs to mind - there were two fellow arachnes making the
fan at the same time who both stopped too!).

If I make a mistake in anything
I think
* can it work without retro-ing;
* if it can, does it matter if
I don't retro (who will notice?)
* if the piece will look OK to most I
leave the mistake in as a unique idiosycratic variation (for our non-native
English speakers this is verbal rubbish to justify not correcting a mistake!)
* If I have to I retro - but the enjoyment of making lace is more important
than the finished result (that's why I couldn't ever do it for money!)
The
wow!
My membership of this list has given me
* so much comfort that if my
lace is right for me, then it's OK
* if I want to do it in the traditonal way
(or not) - this is where the answer is
* membership of a global community
joined in peace by a common interest - please let us grow
Thank you to the
workers - Liz for the list, Avital for moderating and the 40 regulars who
contribute and from whom we lurkers all gain.

By the Way
I've been amazed
that the current threads have enerate so many postingthis week - Power to the
fingers that compute as well as cross and twist (and tat and needle lace!)

Re: [lace] Excellent book on ebay - Ricci

2009-04-16 Thread Jeriames
Dear Lace Scholars,

My English language 2-volume set of the Ricci book, was priced $1,000. I
knew the dealer and was able to negotiate. This is the English language
set that Tess scanned for the Professor's site. I felt very strongly that
everyone in the world should be able to access this body of work. After
scanning, I had the bindings repaired. I think that brought the net cost
back
up to over $1,000. In 2002, I saw the set for sale somewhere for $1,400.
So, a fair IOLI price, and a good cause.

As a lace book collector, I do think IOLI should have one set in the
permanent library, even though postage to a borrower would be prohibitive.
This
is because I have learned much from my Hungarian Lace friend about lost
books and lost scholarship due to 2 World Wars and upheavals in Europe.
These precious things need to be spread around in a variety of known
locations.
   Just my 2 cents.

I think both the nuns in the foreground (one left , one right) are working
at bobbin lace pillows: there are pins sticking out at right angles to the
bolster pillows in both cases. The seated nun in the centre back right
seems to be using a needle to embroider. The nun in the back right is
either spinning or winding bobbins.

Great find! Thanks

The seated nun in the centre back right seems to have collection of bobbins
on the pillow on her lap. So I think there are 3 bobbin lacemakers, one
spinner, and the one standing up on the right has a platter. The one
standing up at the back looks as if she is holding the shelf up

[lace] Nuns at Work

2009-04-16 Thread Dmt11home
But does the nun who looks like she is spinning, actually have a bobbin in
the center of that wheel and she is winding thread onto it from the spools
to the right of her?

Another possibility for the nun on the lower left, might be that she is
mending a piece of lace or lacy garment that is pinned to the pillow. Her
hand
looks like it could be holding a needle, although it could be a bobbin.

one might be winding bobbins. Or is this wishful thinking? If you

Left to right:
I think the nun sitting on the left is holding a bobbin with a pillow
in front of her - perhaps making a tally?

Nun in background appears to be propping a shelf up!
Two seated nuns are making bobbin lace - you can see pins sticking up
and bobbins
Nun sitting in front of them is reading a book, but has a pillow on her
lap

Nun sitting towards the back is spinning with a wheel
Nun standing next to her is holding a cup and saucer
There is a swift (for spun thread) behind the seated nuns.

I also think the one on the left is doing bobbin lace judging by all the pins
sticking out of the pillow.  Maybe she is resting or winding the bobbin in her
right hand.  The nun in the front looks like she is reading the scriptures
while they work. I like the holding the shelf up but it looks like she is
holding a bowl up to a cat on the shelf.  Notice all the footstools. We should
take a page out of their book and rest our feet/legs.  The back bl nun has a
footstool that looks like it has two levels.  Thanks to Noelene for posting
the tiny url.

Oh, wow! Move the mouse, slowly, to lead the fish by the nose;
especially nice if you run the mouse around the fish, in circles. You
can change the fish (left-hand side), or the background (right-hand
side) for more variety.

[lace-chat] perspective

2009-04-16 Thread Clay Blackwell
Be sure to go to the end...

   Did you know

Michael Jordan having retired, with $40 million in endorsements, makes
$178,100 a day, working or not.

If he sleeps 7 hours a night, he makes $52,000 every night while visions
of sugarplums dance in his head.

If he goes to see a movie, it'll cost him $7.00, but he'll make $18,550
while he's there.

If he decides to have a 5-minute egg, he'll make $618 while boiling it.

He makes $7,415/hour more than minimum wage.

If he wanted to save up for a new Acura NSX ($90,000) it would take him
a whole 12 hours.

If someone were to hand him his salary and endorsement money, they would
have to do it at the rate of $200 every second.

He'll probably pay around $200 for a nice round of golf, but will be
reimbursed $33,390 for that round.

He'll make about $19.60 while watching the 100-meter dash in the
Olympics, and about $15,600 during the Boston Marathon.

This year, he'll make more than twice as much as all U.S. past
presidents for all of their terms combined.

Amazing isn't it?

However...

If Jordan saves 100% of his income for the next 500 years, he'll still
have less than Bill Gates has at this very moment.

Game over. Nerd wins.
