Re: [lace] Modern oya jewelry
I also noticed that some of those multistrand "necklaces" appear to be edgings, possibly worked on a thread to be sold separately or cut off a scarf. Yes, I noticed the crochet ones. I didn't see them the first time because I didn't look closely at the enlargements. A few years ago, PieceWork magazine had an article on needlelace oya, but the accompanying photo showed mostly crocheted and tatted oya! The fourth page has some lovely individual flowers worked into pins and earrings. Re: [lace] Modern oya jewelry
Me, too! I like making oya and I do wear scarves on my head, but I couldn't picture myself with miniature lilies and peppers framing my face. Jewelry sounds a bit more interesting. Also, the scale is larger, so I wouldn't have to deal with tiny silk threads and my aging eyesight. Avital On Mon, Aug 3, 2009 at 5:00 AM, Elizabeth Ligeti wrote: > Oooh! Re: [lace] Cutting a Pool Noodle
A bread knife (the sort with a scallopy serrated edge, not the spike-y type) works a treat. Use it like a handsaw, making the vertical cut. I turn the noodle slightly after each pass with the knife/saw to keep the surface even. Ethafoam crumbs are less static than styro crumbs, which stick to everything :( Be wary of applying heat as someone else suggested, though I guess the occasional use of heat on these foams is ok; there are dangerous off-gases especially from heat + styrofoam. Re: [lace] Modern oya jewelry
Avital wrote: Just stumbled across this Etsy shop for modern jewelry made out of Turkish needlelace (oya). http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5807963 - Many thanks, Avital, for posting that. I adore the needlelace oya. There was a Bosnian woman at the IOLI convention this past week, teaching the knotted needlelace. She had a couple of her mother's scarves with the needlelace flowers along the edge. That was the first time I'd seen them "in the flesh", so to speak. Just pictures before this. It was a great treat. One word to those who are considering buying some of the jewelry: look very carefully at the closeups. Many/most of the pieces showing single, or a couple of, large flowers are knotted needlelace. There were several of the long strands of flowers that are also knotted needlelace, but many/most of the long strands are actually crochet. The crochet flowers are thicker and you can see the "chain stitch" appearance along the edges of the petals. Robin P. [lace] silk lace garter
Well after about 6 weeks of work I completed the work on the lace garter I set about creating after my aunt died, in her name. I have uploaded an image just before I sewed the end to the beginning, on bobbinlace its in the album of Sue T, on Arachne it is on hurwitzend. I have recently changed my url after a week off the net, so anyone who had my old supanet address might need to delete it from their address book. Thank you to the people who inspired me to use silk and to work at the design. [lace] misc.
Hello All! Re: the bone item on ebay--is it a needle case? Since the ends unscrew, perhaps it is hollow? I have a tiny vintage bone needle case, carved etc that swings from a miniature handle (like a little bucket except it's a carved tube) so this sort of thing exists in small scale for that purpose. Re: oya on etsy--many thanks for posting. I have seen similar stuff in the keys (Fla), sold to drift about one's neck while wearing a floaty linen outfit. Re: summer school--it's almost here! While searching about for a few words to say in Welsh, I found a link to some photochrom stuff from the Library of Congress posted on Flickr. I ended up downloading some views of Snowdonia national park, Llandudno lighthouse & Happy Valley, circa 1890-1900. Charming & I'm looking forward to making a comparison with 2009 views! Also, according to The English Garden, Bodnant Gardens near Llandudno is celebrating their Diamond Jubilee this year so I hope one of the "optional visit s" on Tues or Thurs includes this very lovely venue. [lace] "Clever Clogs" complement
For those who haven't heard the British expression of "clever clogs" before, it is defined as "an intellectual who is ostentatiously and irritatingly knowledgeable ". But when it was said to me on Saturday (18th July), by Pat Matthews from Shropshire, I'm sure that she meant it in the nicest way, as a complement, when I said that I had made the headband & dress that I was wearing. Pat had visited Estonia in 2006 & I remember reading an article in Lace #126 describing her visit with her daughter. We enjoyed each other's company all afternoon until I had to catch a bus back to Tartu at 5pm. This year's competition was "Apron" & there were some wonderful items entered. I was thinking "small" & made a doll's apron with a Bucks point ground edging designed by Alex Stillwell. Photos of just some of the lace on display that day, can now be seen at: http://niplispits.edicypages.com/fotogalerii/2009-aasta-naitus-parnus Scroll down, & you can see my apron near the bottom, to the right of the butterfly. Pat was asked to be one of the 3 judges, & she was a little reluctant, but I gave her a few guidelines in what to look for - cleanliness, how the lace was attached to the fabric, etc. A Russian lacemaker had been invited to teach a workshop but I decided not to participate as I had shoulder trouble & couldn't carry what I would've had to bring for two days. So I was able keep Pat company, & after having a cup of coffee we walked around the touristy part of Pärnu, and then sat in the nearby park named after Lydia Koidula (For more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lydia_Koidula). A group of about 16 lacemakers had travelled from Sweden to participate in the workshop. We were surprised to find that one of these ladies was originally from Scotland. Two other ladies who didn't have entries in the competition were asked to be the other judges. They were asked to look at all the entries & agree on 3 pieces that they all liked. The other two ladies chose my doll's apron, maybe because Bucks point ground is an unusual. lace. When my lace pieces were returned to me on Tuesday evening, I received as 2nd Prize a gift certificate from a local bookstore & a membership badge from Pat's lace group, as well as a certificate. Now I'm looking forward to the end of August, when I'll be going to Tallinn to meet an American friend & lacemaker from Connecticut who is going on a cruise which is holding knitting classes with Nancy Bush. I hope that it will be a sunny day for us while we wander around the Old City. Re: [lace] Cutting a Pool Noodle
My husband used a solder iron with a made up jig to support a wire which was bare in the middle and when the solder iron switch is on and hot enough it can slice through the polystyrene. He operated the solder iron and between us we gently pushed the foam along the top of the bench and it just sliced through. We had previous marked a line with a pencil. That is how we cut the squares for my big pillow we made about 18 months ago, or so. I dont know if this will help you at all, but he did find instructions with pictures on the internet somewhere at the time, probably asking google how to cut polystyrene. Sue T Dorset UK Either use a very sharp carving knife and try to do it in one cut, or use an electric carving knife. Although pool noodle styrofoam isn't as crumbly as expanded polystyrene it can still make a mess, so work outside. Brenda I am planning to use a covered 5 1/5" diameter pool noodle as a needle lace pillow. Any suggestions as to how to cut it's length to size?
