[lace] Seasons Greetings

2010-12-24 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
Seasons Greetings to everyone, from Sunny Mallacoota (a little tourist and
fishing town at the bottom right hand corner of the continent!)

It is a nice day here, and a lunch with the park owners and some other
friends from town will start soon! There is a covered BBQ area in the middle
of the caravan and cabin park where we will sit and enjoy a feast!

I would like to thank you all for the friendship, and information on this
list over the last 12 months. It is a pleasure to count myself a member of
Arachne.

Brian, - keep on with your emails. They are informative, and interesting,
and never mind the mistakes in spelling. I am learning a lot from them, as
the history of lace is very interesting, and now you have expanded that into
the history of lacemaking tools!

Noelene, - another beaut poem, Thank you. They always brighten the day a
lot!

Lace content - well, I have been doing some bobbin lace, put down the
holding stitches for my first piece of Amelia Ars lace, and got started on a
Knotted lace mat! So I have not been idle, - and I am doing some patchwork
while sitting in the boat while DH fishes. Bream fishing is like watching
grass grow, or paint dry!! I am a lot more productive than he is, most
days, although we have had some nice evening meals of freshly caught fish!

[lace] many thanks to Brian

2010-12-24 Thread tess parrish
The very best postings to the Arizona Archives have come from generous
people who have posted their own material, like Brian, or from all
those who lent me their precious books to scan. This is still an
ongoing project and thanks to John Cropper it will continue to grow as
people send us things.

Brian, please don't worry about typos. We all make them. If you have
read your Arachne carefully, you have seen plenty of them yourself.
It is the spirit behind the words that counts, and your generosity in
sharing so much with all of us is the best Christmas present we could
get! Thanks so much.

RE: [lace] A public shaming! :(

2010-12-24 Thread Karen Zammit Manduca
Even though I am native Maltese and we have our own language, I love English
and read and write it as well as any Englishman (or woman) as I was brought
up to speak it and read mostly English for pleasure as well as for study. It
followed naturally that with what many consider to be the deterioration of
English standards in Malta (even among those students who have taken A-level
English) one of my jobs is freelance proofreading and editing. In fact I
proof and edit several theses a year for university students. One of the
things I have learned is that you cannot proof your own work because you
will miss the errors as you did the first time round; so please don't berate
yourself!
Have a wonderful Christmas everybody.
Karen in Malta.

Subject: [lace] A public shaming! :(

I have just read those articles I put up on Weaver in hard copy!!!

Now I know I am very slack writer (I tend to write as I speak... BUT I
discovered I have used TAIL instead of TALE. I am truly ashamed of that!

In my professional life I had some 40 articles published and I like writing.

I did my Masters by Research and after that I said I would never go back to
"Academic writing" again. So I admit I am slack, I do minimal editing, and
just put stuff out there to inform or to start discussion... But tail and
tale... I am ashamed of myself!

I have the "Old Lace" but cant find the "arsenic"

Enjoy Christmas, after this assuaging of my conscience, I certainly will!
:)

Don't worry, Brian, it's just your equivalent of us making a mistake in
our lace!
