Re: [lace] Simon Toustou roller pillow
I have found that I've never been terribly thrilled with a piece of lace in a picture. But when I see it "in person", I'm blown away by the beauty of it! So I recommend having a look around at the IOLI convention in Bethesda (you *are* going, aren't you - even for one day?) There will be so many laces to be seen, and surely one of them will call out to you!! (Not to mention the sales room!!!) My excuse is that shortly after acquiring my pillow, I was seduced by the Belgian laces, and shortly after that was able to get a Christina. The Christina, for me, is more suitable for these complex laces which require so many, many bobbins. My DH improved my Christina by fashioning a platform, of sorts (we call it "wings" because that's what it looks like) which help keep bobbins which aren't being used out of the way above the pillow - without having to lengthen the leashes. So I haven't used my Toustou at all, even though I think it is absolutely spendid. Clay On 3/3/2011 6:02 PM, Elaine Chock wrote: I also have a relatively new "Simon roller pillow," and it's gorgeous. Re: [lace] Lace pillow question
Hmmm... I'm thinking that Tracy Jackson had bought the company by then. At any rate, her partner makes most of the pillows and stands that she sells. He does a very nice job of reproducing pillows of all types. I've never worked on any of his pillows, so can't comment on that aspect. Re: [lace] Plexiglass bobbin winder
Dear Arachnes and Marilyn, This is the winder sold by John Beswick of Torchon House in Australia. It is made of three pocket-size plexiglass pieces that get assembled together and is clamped to a surface. I couldn't find any picture of it on the web and I haven't seen it in Holly Van Sciver's site or recent PDF catalogue. I sent Mr. Beswick an e-mail and hopefully we can get that ball rolling properly. Thanks to all! Debora L. Re: [lace] Princess Pillow on ebay
This pillow has an interesting "story". It was made in the USA around the turn of the 20th century and marketed as a way for housewives to easily make extra money! The booklet that came with the pillow had instructions for few simple edgings in which the pin holes were individually numbered. Then instructions were written out which indicated what should be done at each pinhole. Looking at those instructions and the numbered pinholes would have discouraged me from trying!! Quite a few of these pillows are still in existence, but there is no record (that I know of) of anyone becoming rich and famous by making lace!!
