[lace] hanging in bundles and sequence

2011-11-19 Thread Lorelei Halley
I took one Honiton workshop with Sheila Wells many years ago, and she taught
us to hang pairs on a pin ABC . ABC to start a leaf at a point.. Then the
right hand batch would be twisted
CAB
BCA
ABC Then repeat this sequence once more, and this would make a bundle at the
pin. One would usually hang on at least 4 pairs this way: 2 would end up as
edge pairs (sewing edge/pin after 4), one would be weaver, the other would be
the first passive. She liked to do it this way because it kept the threads
all together at the start of a leaf.

[lace] St. Catherine, our Patron Saint - for Newbies

2011-11-19 Thread Jeriames
Dear Newbies,

We have written extensively through the years about St. Catherine, the
patron saint of lacemakers, whose day is next Friday, November 25th. There
are local lace guilds who use this day as a special time for a gathering of
lacemakers. The English custom is to serve Cattern Cakes. This year, the
25th is the day after the American Thanksgiving. This is a time when
correspondence on Arachne drops to almost nothing, while our busy women are
preparing family feasts or traveling to be with loved ones. Therefore, (for
the
time - next weekend - when you are not receiving much mail) I am giving
you the address where you can read all about St. Catherine and the cake
served in her memory:

_http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html_
(http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html)

At this site, search for:
1. St. Catherine's Day
2. Cattern Cake

If long-time members of Arachne are celebrating St. Catherine, please
share what kind of program you have planned or memories of this day, so our
newbies may learn more about this old custom that we are dedicated to keeping.

Re: [lace] Re: Crappone Lace Books

2011-11-19 Thread lynrbailey
The OIDFA Bulletin for the Caen Conference 2012 describes Craponne lace as a
semi-continuous lace with mostly floral motifs. The flowers and leaves in the
patterns are often surrounded with gimps to give a raised effect. Cloth-stitch
and half-stitch blocks give this lace an impression of darkness and light. Not
sure that will help, but there it is. Adele is right in that it's from the
Huate Loire near Le Puy-en-Velay. But the accompanying picture doesn't look
like the Cluny from Le Puy-en-Velay. I'd bet that if you looked in the French
supplies stores you'd find the required book.

2011-11-19 Thread bev walker
This is the case where bundle refers to the rib itself in respect to
continental laces.
Then the ABC ABC description applies (also to Honiton as Jane pointed out).

2011-11-19 Thread Adele Shaak
Hi Karen:

Looking up Craponne-sur-Arzon on the Internet, I note that Brioude is to the
west, Retournac is to the southeast, and they list Le Puy-en-Valay as being an
attraction in the vicinity. So, since these other three produce Cluny-style
laces, I'm ready to bet that's what they make at Craponne-sur-Arzon. If so,
maybe there aren't any Craponne lace books because the books and patterns from
the other three places are enough.

PS: of course, as always, I could be totally wrong ;-)

Re: [lace] Re: Hanging in bundles and sequence

2011-11-19 Thread lacelady
My understanding of starting with bundling is that the bobbins are wound
singly. They are not in pairs. A small bunch is knotted together and pinned
above the pattern. They may be braided from the pin to the pattern just for
more control. The pairs are formed as the threads are put into use, with no
pre-planning, however they happen to line up at the end of the braid.

A deliberate arrangement of pairs at the start would most likely happen when
the bobbins are wound in pairs and started by looping the center of the thread
over a pin, or two. A variety of starting formations exist to accommodate
different stitches or edges.

So bundling and preset pairs would not be compatible.

As to the pattern ABC ABC, I've never seen that starting arrangement so cannot
say what kind of lace or stitch it's intended for.

Alice in Oregon... with cold, wet, even snowy, weather. And no relief in
sight. I've spent many hours in a Holiday Market booth this week, and got lots
of lace made.
