[lace] Identification of 'bobbin'
Dear All I have received an email from Leigh C. Eckmair, Historian/Archivist of the The Gilbertsville Free Library in NY with an image of a small piece of turned wood which she thinks may be a lace bobbin. I have posted the image to http://paternoster.orpheusweb.co.uk/lace/misc/IDquery.htm Personally I think it's too long to be the shank of a bobbin with the head broken off - assuming that the ruler is in inches. It's more likely to be a spindle from a doll's house staircase or maybe an ornate wooden box/basket. Does anyone else have suggestions as to what it might be. Re: [lace] Identification of 'bobbin'
Hello Brenda and everyone I agree, it is too long for a bobbin. I think it had a decorative use. Re: [lace] Identification of 'bobbin'
I'm in complete agreement with you, Brenda. The size would have been right for the head or foot board of a doll house bed, 1/12 scale. [lace] Heads of Honiton bobbins
I used to use Honiton bobbins with flat heads. At the time I noticed no round shaped heads of those bobbins. Which may say more about my perception than the bobbins, or their suppliers... I notice that many suppliers these days carry bobbins with heads in the shape of a sphere. I wonder what is the advantage of a sphere. Does anyone have experience with those? Anyone who can tell me pro and con of flat vs. spherical heads in a Honiton bobbin? - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. I have not used Honiton bobbins but I would be suspicious of the sphere-headed ones. With Midlands and Continentals I find the best heads for holding the thread are ones that are fairly flat on the bottom (the side facing the neck) of the cap. The ones that are more tapered, close to parallel with the neck, tend to allow the hitch to loosen (lengthening the tether) or even come off altogether. I would think a spherical cap would be more like the tapered cap than like a flat one. On the other hand, don't tapestry bobbins (for tapestry weaving) have a ball-shaped top? If it works for them, maybe it's okay for Honiton, too. I just would not buy them for fear they would be unreliable. Robin P. [lace-chat] THE BLONDE WHO HUNTED ALLIGATORS
A BLONDE JOKE THAT YOU'VE NEVER HEARD BEFORE After becoming very frustrated with the attitude of one of the shopkeepers, the young blonde declared, 'Well, then, maybe I'll just go out and catch my own alligator and get a pair of alligator shoes for free!' The shopkeeper replied with a sly smile, 'Well, little lady, why don't you go give it a try?' The blonde headed off to the swamp, determined to catch an alligator. Later in the day, the shopkeeper was driving home, and spotted the young woman standing waist deep in the murky water, shotgun in hand. He saw a huge 9-foot gator swimming rapidly toward her. With lightning reflexes, the blond took aim, shot the creature and hauled it up onto the slippery bank. Nearby were 7 more dead gators all lying belly up. The shopkeeper watched in amazement as the blond struggled with the gator. Then, rolling her eyes, she screamed in frustration.. Blast!! THIS ONE'S BAREFOOT, TOO! Please be aware that raw garlic can harbour Clostridium botulinum. This bacterium causes Botulism. Now I know that whilst some people are thinking, great grow my own botox but Botulinum is an anaerobic bacterium which means that even if you cover it in oil and exclude any air it can still multiply and grow. [lace-chat] Fw: Military Wives Choir------beautiful!
You may have to highlight, copy, and paste to your browser. Get out the Kleenex. This should bring a tear to your eyes. Wives Choir This video was taken from a British series where a conductor named Gareth Malone takes a group of people and turns them into a choir. This time he's taken a group of military wives whose husbands are all away in Afghanistan and turned them into a choir. Gareth looks about 16yrs old but is actually in his mid-30s and a Choir master for the London Symphony Orchestra, among other things. They wrote a song based on excerpts from letters written by the couples whilst apart and this is the beautiful result! http://www.youtube.com/user/militarywiveschoir To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat y...@address.here. [lace-chat] Fw: Och aye!
Och aye! An Arab Sheik was admitted to hospital for heart surgery, but prior to the surgery, the doctors wanted a supply of his blood in case it was needed. He had a rare blood type, which couldn't be found locally and so the call went out. Finally a Scot was located who had a similar blood type who willingly donated his blood for the Arab. After the surgery, in appreciation, the Arab sent the Scotsman a new BMW, a bunch of diamonds US dollars. A couple of weeks later, the Arab had to go through a corrective surgery. His doctor telephoned the Scotsman who was more than happy to donate his blood again. After the second surgery, the Arab sent the Scotsman a thank-you card a jar of candies. The Scotsman was shocked that the Arab this time did not reciprocate his kind gesture as he had anticipated. He phoned the Arab asked him: I thought you would be generous again, that you would give me another BMW, diamonds money... but you only gave me a thank-you card a jar of candies. To this the Arab replied: Aye, but now I have Scottish blood in my veins. To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat y...@address.here.
