[lace] Thread size

2014-02-07 Thread Jeanette Fischer
I bought some linen thread from a deceased estate. The lady learnt
lacemaking in Belgium in the early 1980's. The thread is wound in skeins
and there is no label of course.

The skein is tied in ten separate little bundles with red thread. I would
like to know if the number of bundles is any indication to the thickness of
the thread?

Yes, the red thread separating the little bundles means that it's a slip
thread. So long as you have a complete bundle the number of small 'slips'
indicates its thickness.

10 slip (From E Peat Son, Nottingham) measures 46 wraps/cm

[lace] Dermatological irritation, lacemaking

2014-02-07 Thread Dmt11home
Here is a question I haven't seen dealt with before. I am experiencing
patches of itchiness, inflammation and irritation on the skin on the inside of
both my thumb joints, but slightly worse on the right hand. I use bulbed
bobbins, often of guatambo, which is palm. My dermatologist seems to be
puzzled by this situation which, although it has improved, is not resolving
despite constant application of an eczema cream.
Has anyone else had this? Could it be lacemaking related? I don't actually
make bobbin lace everyday, so it seems a little odd, but now I am
beginning to wonder.

Thanks, Malvary. I think I remember that posting. I have been using the
guatambo because they are less expensive than other woods, but maybe I
should, as you say switch woods. I actually did a bit of a search on allergies
to
palm today, but it seems that if I had such an allergy I would be
experiencing digestive issues due to the fact that many foods, medications,
etc.
have palm oil hidden in them, often described as vegetable oil. But, another
culprit could be the finish on the bobbins, I suppose. You never really
know how things have been treated.

Re: [lace] Dermatological irritation, lacemaking

2014-02-07 Thread J D Hammett
Hi Devon and fellow Arachnids,

Many bobbin makers use carnuba wax to polish their bobbins. This is a known
skin irritant. Some bobbin makers have been badly affected to the point of
having to use an inferior polishing wax to continue their work. Sanding the
bobbins and varnishing them could help, but remember that the carnuba wax is
applied to the bobbin with friction on the running lathe. It has therefore got
hot on application and penetrated quite deeply into the wood. It might be
useful to try using unpolished bobbins for a while –preferably of fruitwood
if you can get hold of them-.

Happy lace making.

[lace] German Lace Museum?

2014-02-07 Thread Elizabeth Kurella
Are there perhaps any German lacemakers out there who might know if Plauen
still has a museum of antique handmade lace? Supposedly around 1900 there was
a collection of fine handmade lace in Plauen that may have served as
inspiration for machine lace designs —

The Plauen tourist website only mentions the machine lace industry — no info on
content of museum.

Anyone know anything about this?

If you think it is the wood - perhaps you could sand them lightly to remove
any oils or finishes and then treat them with several coats of urethane
varnish.

Hi,

Delurking for a moment to join the conversation.

I found references to the lace museum in the German section of the tourist
website:
http://www.plauen.de/de/tourismus/plauen-entdecken/plauener-spitze/spitzenmuseum.php?shortcut=spitzenmuseum

My German is pretty rusty, but the museum seems to be alive and kicking. As
far as I can tell, they currently have their 30 years anniversary, so it
may not be the same museum you are thinking of.

Sincerely,

Re: [lace] Dermatological irritation, lacemaking

2014-02-07 Thread Adele Shaak
I've known a couple of lacemakers who developed an allergy to their exotic wood
bobbins, but we do so many things with out thumbs I wouldn't leap to that
conclusion. I myself have had troubles with my thumbs for some time (including
inflammation and rough skin on the inside of the thumb, mainly on the right
hand but also on the left) and I just realized the other day what has caused
this - seven months ago I moved into an apartment that has the old-fashioned
curtains that you draw by pulling on a cord. The curtains are long and it takes
a lot of pulling and my thumbs just aren't up to it. Now I've changed how I
pull and that has already made a difference, and I'm going to look around for
some kind of a hand grip to help me out.

Have you tried gently rubbing one of the suspect bobbins on the inside of your
wrist? If it's an allergy it'll react and you'll know for sure.

Hope this helps.

Even if the carnuba wax has penetrated the wood deeply, a light

[lace] lace at the Olympics

2014-02-07 Thread Bev Walker
Hello everyone

Pleased to see the presence of lace for Sochi 2014. The Vologda region is
represented in designs of the Sochi Olympic Patchwork Quilt fabric.

The individual escorts for each nation in the parade of nations at the
opening ceremony were wearing elegant head-gear with a lace effect. I found
a reference at Huffington Post that they represent the Snow Girl, of
folklore, daughter of Father Frost and the Snow Queen.

At a glance I thought the scarves on the Estonian team were trimmed with
blocks of lace, but I think it was a black knitted design on white :)
Perhaps someone has more information on that.

Hi Devon,

There are many woods which can cause allergic reactions, though as far as I
have heard, this is usually due to exposure to dust from those woods when
turned, sawn, etc. (Therefore, I would hesitate to sand your bobbins, as has
been suggested.) ?The polishing process should seal the wood, so if it is your
bobbins, I would be more suspicious of the polish than the wood. As someone
mentioned, some are allergic to carnauba wax, for example. ?I would also say
that my understanding is that most woods which cause severe reactions tend to
be dark, exotic woods, while guatambo is light, though I suppose anything is
possible where allergies are concerned.
