[lace] Spangles & early lace
Thank you Jeri! I planned to take a peek at Gil Dye's books in Sacramento as I wondered if spangle instructions were included & I must purchase them if so. The class description on 16th-17thC lace did not specifically mention spangles so I selected a different topic. Will rethink that next time! You're quite right about making my own path to use spangles. I dare say I'm the only RSN student to have used lavender plaid silk dupioni for goldwork foundation fabric! A sweet bag is under construction in my stash--from a Chris Berry class at EGA seminar. Thanks for reminding me to use the Archives again so I may re-read your reviews. [lace] Messages that don't go through
Over the years there have frequently been times when ISPs appear to fall out with, and blacklist, each other. AOL is a prime one for this, and my ISP is one that has been blacklisted by them in the past. I think there were problems with one of the smaller US ISPs - was it Comcast? - where AOL refused to receive messages sent to them. Then it all goes quiet for a bit, and we can all talk to each other... until the next round. The spam filter on Panda lets me decide, by marking what it thinks is spam in the same way that the major denotes Lace or Lace Chat... so I filter it out of my inbox into a spam folder, with the subject line dictating the rule two messages have just landed in there, one from Jeri and one from Bev, which were not flagged by Panda as spam, but had the word "spam" in the subject line! -- Jane Partridge - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Dear Bev, Thanks for your input. I have corrected the address you gave for DMARC to: http://www.dmarc.org (There was an extra f in the address: dfmarc, so it rejected.) You might find it interesting that every message I send to Arachne drops into my own Spam folder when it goes out across the world. It should be going to my Inbox. It has been doing this for a long time, so I am chasing that problem, too. Scream! [lace] Messages Going to Spam
Dear Friends around the world, I have just hung up my phone after speaking with 7 different AOL technical support staff in India and in the Philippines in 90 minutes Each person could not route my call back to an American person whom I might have trusted to tell what Arachne is, and that it is on a very old (in the computer world) server. In complaining to AOL, I don't want to jeopardize our way of communicating. The final tech person has sent a memorandum to "headquarters?" and said I should hear from them (by e-mail, I guess) within 24 hours. I wonder how long I should be loyal to this provider? I want to talk to an American, when the corporation being paid is American. They have been told messages about your Spam folders are coming to me from England, Wales, Canada, Spain, Malta. They know it is an international issue. Not one of these people has mentioned something called DMARC. No one at AOL has said we cannot use capital letters or punctuation in the Subject line. Their own name is sometimes AOL and sometimes Aol. We often use OIDFA, not Oidfa. Or IOLI, not Ioli. It would seem to me that many long business names are abbreviated all the time, and they should not reject if acronyms are used on a Subject line. Devon and I have had Spam problems between us, and reported them before this. We are both using AOL. I am wondering if the reason we have so many silent members on Arachne is because they are not receiving mail from those of us using AOL. Thank you, Brenda! I will be asking about DMARC. Adele, Ruth Kern wanted to carry a book by a British author last year. I put the 2 women together. However, one was not getting e-mail from the other. When we figured this out, I allowed them to send business correspondence through me. Horrible. But we worked our way around the problem so Americans and Canadians could buy the book on this side of the big pond. Let us see what I hear from AOL. It will be shared, since this is a widespread problem. [lace] more email fun, and fun with cats
I wound up having to make a "rule" about all messages from Arachne aren't SPAM, in my gmail account. I had wondered where all y'all had disappeared to. And for the grammarians: if you're from the South (USA), "all y'all" is correct grammar, sort of. Sorry, I can't help myself, moved away almost 4 years ago, and I can't get the particular grammar out of my system. Lace related - my cat has discovered my latest "safe" place to store the work-in-progress pillow, but not a current project, on top of a tall bookcase. I thought it was safe. Today I get to discover how much damage has been done by one cat. The pillow is covered with pinned down cover-cloths, and in a cleaner's bag tied shut (quit cringing Jeri). This afternoon I'm off to the Container Store to try to find something more permanent to store it. Re: [lace] Messages Not Getting Through
Hello everyone For what it's worth, aol, yahoo addresses and any message with capitalized words in the subject line land in my Spam folder now. I have since added the lace correspondents to my contacts. I noticed messages from Leonard, Devon, Jeri, Patricia, and Hazel in the recent 50, along with some flyers I like to get and wondered where they were - each of the latter had CAPS or "strange letters" in the subject line. Thankyou Adele for pointing out the Spam triggers. I investigated Gmail's Spam advice. Having added the above to contacts, their messages will now show in my Inbox. I hope so. [lace] Messages Not Getting Through
This isn't lace-related, but it is list-related so I hope the ListMom will forgive me for posting. At the end of June, I was in the process of ordering some supplies from the UK. This involves messages back and forth for various reasons, and we had just started the messaging - I had given them my order and they had come back to me with the shipping cost - when they stopped answering their e-mails. I sent them more messages. No answer. After a week I thought maybe they had shut down or something, so I telephoned. That's when I discovered that they *had* been sending me messages, and were wondering why *I* wasn't replying! In Canada, new anti-Spam legislation took effect on July 1st, and my supplier's messages had somehow been flagged as Spam. With the standard setup at my service provider, anything flagged by them as Spam is automatically deleted - I don't even get the message. Now I have changed those settings so that my Spam goes into a special folder on their website - it is still not downloaded to me. Every couple of days I go in and see what I've got, and there are usually one or two addresses that are not spam at all, and I flag them as OK and download them to my mail software, where they appear marked as "Junk". This morning, one of those messages was a normal Arachne message from Jeri. It had the subject line "Spangles!" and I can see why it was flagged - the subject has an exclamation mark. That's one of the things that triggers Spam filters, and I try not to use them. Hope this helps. I only found out what was happening because I remembered about the new legislation and complained to my service provider. Re: [lace] Noelene's Poems - Inspired by Lace
Over the last few weeks there have been changes to several of the other forums that I am subscribed to . It’s because of changes to something called DMARC, which Yahoo and AOL in particular, plus a couple of other ISPs have been implementing, and it’a been causing all sorts of problems for mailing lists, depending on just how the individual lists are set up. It’s something to do with the way it changes the info in the message headers, but one of the family history lists I am subscribed to has resorted to read-only for AOL and Gmail addresses as when they try to post/reply they get unsubscribed and the moderator has to manually re-subscribe them! I’m guessing here but it may be something to do with those changes. AlI I can suggest is that when messages from Jeri, or anyone else with an AOL email address, is received into your junk email box you mark it as not-junk and hope that your system is able to learn and over-ride any other settings.
