[lace] cross-post: 9-11 hearts go home

2003-09-10 Thread Emma Crew
Dear tatters around the world,

I have not been very active on the tatting lists lately, but I wanted
to let you all know that -- thanks to the kindness of the organizers of
the Rolling Requiem (www.rollingrequiem.org), the September 11th
foundation, volunteers in Seattle and New York City, and many others --
the tatted hearts we made two years ago are on their way to the
families of the victims. This summer we put together packets with
badges that had been worn by musicians around the world, many of which
came with very touching letters, and put a tatted heart inside each
one.

For current new articles about the distribution, please see
http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/texis.cgi/web/vortex/display?slug=requiem05&date=20030905&query=Rolling+Requiem

and
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/artandlife/apother_story.asp?category=1404&slug=Sept%2E%2011%20Requiem

Thanks to all of you who made hearts, Lily Morales who made the first
big organizational efforts, and members of the Lacemakers of Puget
Sound who helped affix each heart to a card explaining the meaning and
symbolism of the heart. It has been a blessing having these tokens of
love pass through my hands.

Best wishes,
Emma near Seattle

Heather is right on here for my life as well. I do bobbin lace and take
classes when I can, but pretty much all of my bobbin lacemaking happens
in class or on the days I can manage to get to guild meetings. At home
I knit or tat, because I have a three year old who tends to launch
himself at me unexpectedly. Bobbin lace is a nearly impossible hobby
for mothers of young children, so that's an automatic age restriction
right there.

They do, indeed. And I love going there (and make a point of it nearly
every trip to visit my mom, who lives in the area). But it's not all
that exciting a bobbin lace shop. It's great for other forms of lace,
and I've made many happy (and expensive) purchases there, but I was
very disappointed when early in my bobbin lacemaking career (well, I
suppose it's still early since I'm still very much a beginner) I went
there hoping to find pillows and books. I was unable to find any pillow
other than "the horror kit," and the bobbins weren't all that exciting,
either. I've done much better with my local lace supplier (Catchpin) or
ordering from Snowgoose.

And it is a very lovely little publication. Well worth the price, IMO!

They look sort of like an inside-out version of a knitting
spool/knitting Nancy to me... so maybe they're for making shoelaces?

BOTH pronunciations are correct, at least in the U.S.. Merriam-Webster
gives "plate" as the primary pronunciation and "plat" as the secondary.
You can hear the different pronunciations on their online dictionary
entry:
http://m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=plait
I, too, have always said "plate" and only started hearing "plat" when
studying with teachers from Europe. So it's one of those regional
differences things.

[lace] Portland, OR groups?

2004-08-09 Thread Emma Crew
I know there is one, with a lace day and everything, but I can't seem
to locate contact information. A new friend in the area is looking to
get back into bobbin lacemaking. Anyone know who I should send her to?

Thanks,
Emma near Seattle

Mine does also, and it has a batch of pages missing as well. I was
going to send it back to the publisher, but then I got distracted by an
appendectomy. Now I'm reminded to do something about it!

Mine is also the Dover revised paperback edition. I have pages from the
start to page 190. Then I have pages 207-222, then from page 207 again,
to the end of the book. So the extra 207-222 is replacing 191-206.
Frustrating! I have sent Dover a message, but of course, it's the
weekend.

[lace] WOW Dover publications customer service

2004-09-20 Thread Emma Crew
I wrote to Dover over the weekend explaining about the missing and
duplicated pages in my copy of "The Book of Bobbin Lace Stitches" and
they are going to replace it with an inspected copy (to be sure all the
pages are there). Free of charge, no questions asked!

I did buy it directly from them, so they can see in their records that
I purchased a copy, but still. Great and friendly service from one of
my favorite publishers!

[lace] tatting repair sought

2004-12-14 Thread Emma Crew
Hello fellow lacers,

I got the message below from someone hoping to get some old tatted
pieces repaired. It's not work I feel at all qualified to do, but I'm
hoping some of you might be, or might know where to look. I have no
information beyond what's in the original message which follows:

Thanks for any assistance you can provide!
Emma near Seattle,
whose lacemaking activites of late have all been of the knitted
variety, because it's the only kind I can manage to do with my active 4
year old in the house.
