Thank you Jenny. A useful, well structured and thought out mail that I am sure

 Hi everyone

Quote: Browsing using Google is not easy if you do not know how  or cannot
access the internet easily. Unquote

This sentence, following closely behind a conversation with a school teacher
on the subject made me give some thought to how I search the net. I used to
get complements like "where do you find the time to search", "wow, you found
that so quick" which made me feel good but did not help the sender (or you)

So ...here are a few hints and tips that I use - I hope you will find them
helpful

If you have ever asked a database for specific results you will know that
how you word that query defines how useful the answers will be!

For example:

If I type in Jenny Brandis to Google.com.au I get 188,000 results - this
gives all instances of Jenny and all instances of Brandis, not necessarily
even on the same page

If I type in "Jenny Brandis"  to Google.com.au I get 3,860 results - this
gives all instances of Jenny Brandis the phrase - a lot of them are me :)

If I type in "Jenny Brandis" lace to Google.com.au I get 2,260 results - a
lot of them are about me and lace :)

If I type in "Jenny Brandis" arachne to Google.com.au I get 1,500 results

So you can see, choosing your words carefully can impact your results.
Adding  the inverted commas in front and behind my name forces the search to
only give results that have the 2 words in a phrase.

With lace searches we can narrow it down even further

If I type in "Jenny Brandis" free lace pattern to Google.com.au I get 2,160
results and the 1st one goes to the page with links to free patterns on my
website

If I type in "free lace pattern" however I get 199,000 results - just not
prickings :(

If I type in "free bobbin lace pattern" however I get 35,600 results - the
first going to Lorelei Halley's lynxlace site

Try the following searches (copy and paste into the search field on goggle)

Arachne lace

Arachne -lace

Out out damned spot

Remember a line (or 2) from a song but cant remember the title? Try

May your hands always be busy  May your feet always be swift

Ok, getting off topic but the idea is the same for lace related searches.

Please, if this helps you, pass it on to others - knowledge is to be shared
not hoarded.

Re: [lace] Equivalence of Superior Threads' Kimono Silk

2015-10-29 Thread Jane Wright
Thank you Brenda. I use your book constantly and have just reorganised my
thread storage using w/cm. I have several spools which have lost their labels,
carless of me I know. I used a ruler to find my own w/cm for them and have been
able to file them appropriately. There is now a chance that they will finally
be used!

Re: [lace] Undelivered Arachne Mail / Archives

2015-06-17 Thread Jane Wright
Interestingly, this is the only Arachne mail that has gone straight into my
spam box ?!
If you have a length of lace (a sample perhaps) gather it into a circle and
sew a pretty bead into the centre, attach to a safety pin and VOILA you have a
pretty broach.  I saw some very attractive examples at the Lace Guild
convention in April

 Hi All,

I am not a computer expert, but I know that arachne is a majordomo
mailing list working on a unix computer.

All 'arachne' does is receive an email and bounce (reflect) it out to
everyone on a specific list.

Except that in addition, 'arachne' bundles emails into a package for a
'digest' version.

I receive the digest version and although there is the occasional
missing message, I've always assumed it is to do with the bundling
process with a message being too large for one digest and somehow not
getting in to the next. Those lost messages never belong to any one
particular sender, but are quite random and rare. Certainly the sources
of missing messages (Jeri, Devon, Jacquie all appear in the digests).

In other words, the arachne majordomo and server are working fine and if
anyone on the list is not in receipt of an email it is much more likely
to be the receiving server / computer / email software. I can only
suggest that those with problems pick over their email settings with a
fine-tooth comb.

May be Avital can offer further insight.

Best wishes,
Jane

PS. Nearly forgot! Lace content - I demonstrated lace for a day in
Christchurch Priory last week for a 'Living Arts' exhibition. Pleased to
have a steady trickle of interested people watching and asking
questions. But I'm sorry to say it never occurred to me to wear any
lace! What a good idea (thanks Jeri). I must think of something suitable
to make.

Re: [lace] Reusing Prickings

2015-06-11 Thread Jane Wright
Hi All,
I've been watching this thread with interest.  I'm with Alex on this one I
really like to work on pricking card without sticky plastic, I use Indian ink
and a mapping pen for marking. One reason is that I find it gives extra
resistance when placing and removing pins, which doesn't do my RSI much good.
Secondly I find that marking the pattern by hand gives me an opportunity to
really look at the design before I start. I have no problem with anyone using
film, it just isn't for me.
I also prefer a straw pillow, I don't find the additional weight an issue.
Perhaps I'm just a Luddite ;D

about
the many, many times he had used a simply created pricking.  I forget the
nature of the paper, but it wasn anything special.  And I simply
photocopied a Bucks pattern onto card stock, nothing fancy, and no plastic,
put it around a thin travel pillow roller and made more than 75 inches of
lace

mutilated

all the misplaced pinholes was probably used hundreds of times, if what they

Dear Catherine,
Thank you so much for letting us know. I was a student of Cynthia's for many
years and then had the honour of taking over one of her residential courses.
Although we had lost touch, I still find myself quoting her when I am teaching

Re: [lace] Lace Police, chairs

2015-04-24 Thread Jane Wright
Many years ago I was lucky enough to have a chair made for me.  It is what I
knew as a nursing chair, fairly low with a very straight back and no arms.
Since I am fairly short, they adjusted the seat length - front to back - so
that when I sit on it my back is firmly supported and my feet reach the floor.
Ideal for a Honiton lace pillow. I had it covered in 'Imperial Blue Electrum'
velvet. The name says it all, it is opulent! Wwhen I went to collect it I
found that they had had it sitting in the show room for over a week as it was
attracting so much attention. As I said I am very lucky and I luxuriate in it
every time I make lace. Sigh.
Jane

Regarding Lacemakers chairs  - once some years ago, Helen and I went
demonstrating at an Historic House here in Melbourne, and they seated us by
a window (great light!), and sat us in Victorian Ladies chairs - so they
called them. They were  the Best chairs I have had to sit and make lace -
very low, with a circular seat, and the back wrapped about half way around
the seat, so you sat back and the back rest wrapped around you. Being low,
your knees were up, - just right for resting your pillow on!!
