I can't find the original thread for this subject heading and wondered what it was about (I've tried the Arachne archives). The posts don't seem to be related to the subject any more. My interest is that I went to school at Ackworth and so lived with the samplers for five years. Re: [lace] Care of fabrics - 1940s style
Thank you for sharing that; I love reading old housewifery advice. My favourite snippet from a book I have is that after washing your blankets you should go out onto the green with a neighbour to give the blankets a good shake. This appeals to me for two reasons: firstly the idea that we all have a green to go out to is lovely, and secondly I really like the concept for sharing housework with neighbours. Work at home always goes better when I share tasks with my daughter. Halves the time and the company is good. Re: [lace] Types of lace
I'm usually a lurker on this list, so fulfilling two tasks with one email. I started with torchon about 3 years ago. Since then I've also been taught needlelace and Bucks Point. I can't say I make Bedfordshire lace as I only tried it for a short while and we didn't get on. Last year I started to make a lace dragon in what I now know to be Milanese and which I am enjoying very much. I've usually got some knitting on the go as well, and it is often knitted lace. I love making lacy socks, and like Clay favour toe-up, two-at-a-time on a circular needle. I've nearly finished my current Bitterroot shawl in camel/silk with tiny beads on the edge so will be looking through my yarn stash for a new project soon. I wound all of them at the same time, same spool of thread, of course wound the same direction. What might I have done during winding to cause that one to misbehave? I can't see a consistent difference. Tightness? Thanks. Nancy Connecticut, USA I've also found this happens and it usually seems to be because of the characteristics of the bobbin itself. I have one with a very tiny head which is particularly shiny and this is often the one that slips down lengthening the leash. Another has very light spangles and doesn't lie as flat as the others so the hitch comes loose and the thread leash lengthens. Perhaps the answer llies in the bobbin not the thread? Re: [lace] Lace Exhibition in Birmingham
On 10/12/2011 12:08, Jane Partridge wrote: I managed to get to the Lost in Lace exhibition on Thursday. There is still some building work going on in the Museum and Art Gallery, which if you go in by the main entrance is between the Bridge Gallery and the stairs down to the Gas Hall, and a lot of the lifts between floors are out of action because of this work. I first looked at the lace in the Bridge Gallery - this is a relatively small selection of lace from the large lace collection I know Birmingham museum has in store, but includes examples from different regions and centuries, and some tools of the trade. One case shows a pillow with work in progress, the attached bobbins being bone Midlands - though many pairs are missing, so it doesn't give quite a true picture. There is some lovely point de gaze on display, Honiton, Branscombe, Beds, etc; as well as the "black lace" (Chantilly) that forms the basis for one of the exhibits in the Gas Hall. Going through and down to the Gas Hall, you are met with quite a different view of lace, that makes you wonder if the definition of lace needs to be changed to "holes surrounded by... ". A large black lace curtain and pelmet effect surrounds two columns - and looks very realistic, until you get close up and realise that it is not made of threads at all. There is a hanging of crystals on intertwined "threads" in the centre - like a chandelier - and a room setting of black steel cords intertwined like a web filling the space in front of three huge long white dresses - there is a video display next to this showing the (speeded up) process of the exhibit being installed - really fascinating to watch. The "black lace" caught several of us out - without reading the description panel, you go into a "room" where there is a film showing of the lace shown under an electron microscope, with background noise of a silkworm eating its way through mulberry leaves... we all expected the moth to appear on the screen having chomped its way through the fibres! There are some large installations that look, at a distance, like lace, and some that show "holes surrounded by ." which are perhaps not quite lace-like, but if you can think outside the box (ie don't go into the Gas Hall expecting to see lace made from threads, you won't) it is quite a stunning display. The Museum tearoom's afternoon offer of cake and tea/coffee for the price of the cake was too good to miss (cheaper than probably anywhere else in the city centre!) and provided a chance to sit down. Wondering through other galleries, I spotted other textiles on display, including some lace in unexpected places - Birmingham Museum has *never* had a policy of displaying textiles. As a child, I can remember two dresses being displayed in a glass case between the gallery where the permanent exhibition of glass resides (Birmingham has a fine collection of glass, including some of Edward Burne-Jones' stained glass windows) and the tea room, but that was it as far as textiles went. When we had Sheila Shreeve, a curator who was cataloguing the lace collection, to talk at our lace day in 1993 Mom commented that she didn't know Birmingham had any lace - she had lived in the city since her birth in 1922 and had been a frequent visitor to the museum. It seemed the museum directors over the years decided that no-one was interested in textiles... and so they were kept in store. About the only other textiles I can remember in the Gas Hall were when there was a Chinese exhibition which included a silk loom (with demonstrations) and demonstrations of Chinese embroidery - but that was a travelling exhibition, not permanent. So, if you get the chance of coming to Birmingham between now and February 19th, do make the effort to go and see the exhibition - this will show them that textiles are important, and people are interested! I didn't buy the exhibition catalogue - I need the £25 it would have cost to pay for other things at this time of year... and there is currently the Birmingham-Frankfurt Christmas Craft Market in the city centre with lots of tempting stalls to buy Christmas presents from... (I now have a small glass locomotive!). I did wonder if we should arrange and have a lace-in at the museum whilst the exhibition is on! (There is a monthly knitting group that meets in the tea room at the museum, so the idea is not quite as far fetched as it seems...) It sounds really interesting, Jane. I will be coming down to see the exhibition some time in the new year, tho I'm not sure exactly when. I'd be happy to combine this with a lace-in - you know me, I'll make lace anywhere, on a train, in a museum ... Let me know if it's going to happen. My daughter persuaded me to have a go and I was hooked. I loved the rhythm of moving the bobbins back and forth. I went to Knuston Hall to do a torchon course and have also attended the Edinburgh Lace Course, other than that, I've learned from books and the internet, with help from occasional meetings with lace making friends. It seems to be the process of making the lace that I love rather than the end product as, unless I'm making the lace for someone or something in particular, it goes into a drawer and is mostly forgotten about. I love the challenge of working out stitches that are new to me, and how to make a pattern work. I also enjoy spangling bobbins - putting together pleasing combinations of colours of beads. I think if it ever became easy I'd give up, but looking at all the wonderful pieces of lace here and at meetings, there are so many different types of lace that I'm never going to get to that stage. [lace] Disaster? Update
Thank you to everyone who offered advice when I inadvertently put a piece of lace through a hot wash. I dampened the lace and pinned it back onto it's pricking. That was two weeks ago and tonight I felt brave enough to take the pins out. I'm happy to report that it has recovered its shape. Re: [lace] re: Lace Supplies in Foreign climes
Thank you for reminding me about that website. I'm going to Prague next week so will have a look to see if there's anything I shouldn't miss. Lesley On 13/04/2011 02:23, Lyn Bailey wrote: If I’ve sent this twice, please accept apologies. I have reason to believe that the first message didn’t go through. Whenever I go to a country, I always check lacefairy.com for what they say. I take the paper with me, and I've done my research beforehand to find out where these places are. Usually the lace places on lacefairy are nowhere near where I'm going, but not always. There was Vadstena, Sweden, where there are TWO shops dedicated solely to lacemaking. But anywhere there is a lace museum, or a lace center, you can figure on lace supplies being sold somewhere in town. Like the fantastic shop next to the lace museum in Le Puy en Velay in France. Make sure you know the words in German. Then there is the search. Wherever I am, in my Grandfather's village in the Northern Black Forest, or Munchen, or Rothenburg ob der Tauber, I look for needlework shops. A question, an answer, and you know. Most of the time I'm not lucky, but every once in a while, bingo. There was a little shop in Munchen in 1997 where I found reprinted lace books from before the first World War. I bought my copy of Ulrike Lohr Voelker's Kloppelkurs in a regular bookstore in Koblenz. And in Benalmadena Spain there was a little needlework shop in the town where I bought 2 dozen Spanish bobbins, and about 3 lace magazines. You never know what you will find. We were leaving Dinklesbuhl last year in July during the Kinderzeche when I found out that the lace on the re-enactors was all made by one woman in the town. We had appointments elsewhere so I could not pursue this lead by looking for needlework places in the town, nor trying to locate the lady. I find that lacemakers are very cordial when another person interested in lace crosses their path. In England, I was hoping to actually visit SMP, but the owner emailed me back that they no longer had store hours, but they would be attending a laceday in a small town, on a railroad line, somewhere an hour's train ride south of London. I had the best time. But I couldn't buy the lovely travel pillow because she didn't take credit cards. If the language problem isn't too difficult, I'd look for lacedays at the right time and in the right place. Don't count on the tourist bureaus, usually so helpful, to know what you're talking about, unless you're at a lace center. The google translator and the internet should be a great help in this. They don't keep lacedays a secret from those who are interested. Unfortunately, I've never looked for such things, so I can't tell you where to look. The one thing I can tell you is that in general you will have much more luck there than in the US, that's for sure. [lace] Disaster?
The sun was shining brightly in a blue sky yesterday so I was unusually full of housework enthusiasm. One of the things I grabbed to go into the wash was one of my cover cloths which was lying on the sideboard. I didn't stop to wonder why it was there but was reminded when I opened the washing machine, which had been on a hot wash, to find the pice of lace I'd recently finished, apart from sewing in the ends, which I'd carefully placed inside a cover cloth to keep it clean. Yes, THAT cover cloth. So, I now turn to you, my Arachne friends, to ask, is all lost? Can I save the shrivelled piece of blue fabric that was to be a table mat for my spare bedroom? I've tried pressing it, but the corners pull out more than the middle so it's somewhat wavy round the edges and I'm at a loss as to whether it is rescuable or whether I should start again. In hope Lesley Marple, England, where it's still sunny, but I'm not feeling as enthusiastic any more. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Kind regards Susan Editor of Lace --- Susan Roberts http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/susanroberts - --- The Lace Guild was contacted by the BBC for advice in advance of the episode showing lacemaking being made. In fairness to the actresses concerned and the production team, The Lace Guild Executive would like to correct rumours and inaccuracies which have been drawn to our attention. All lacemaking in the episode shown was carried out entirely by the two actresses concerned. Following hours of tuition from one of our local tutors, they could both competently handle bobbins, complete Bucks Point ground, footside and headside with picots. The two ladies both put a lot of effort into learning some of our skill, as they wanted to do justice to lacemakers and their skills. They should be applauded for it. The pillow shown and the lace on it were provided by Sue Dane from The lace Guild, other Bucks Point lace was provided by Pam Nottingham. The BBC production team did take some of our advice, changing some of the original script, which mentioned the colours of the bobbin spangles. We had no input at the filming stage. Unfortunately they used a piece of Maltese lace in the filming, not provided by us and described it as Point Ground lace. Their error has been pointed out to them. Kind regards Sue Dane Lace Guild Chairman Thank you for sending this in to the list. It's great to get the right information after all our speculation. I have learned something about the different types of lace from this discussion, and also that a lacemaker would probably stick to one type of lace if she was making it for sale - not something I'd realised. She was even putting pins in after a few stitches. The lace coming off the pillow was a Bucks Point edging about an inch wide. She described to Ruby Pratt how they all used to sit together in one cottage making lace, which they wrapped in blue paper and took to a fair once a year to sell. Then she showed Ruby how to do it by having Ruby sit in front of her (almost on her lap) with the pillow on Ruby's lap and guiding Ruby's hands. She showed her how to do "whole stitch". The most exposure lacemaking has had in a long while. The section in "Edwardian Farm" a few weeks ago was very short and didn't show much of the process, although Pat Perryman gave a bit of the history of earning a living making bobbin lace in Devon. Jean in Poole, Dorset, UK Although I'm not a very experienced lace maker I don't think that those were the actresses hands. When the hands were shown they moved quite fast, but when the actress was shown she wasjust rolling the bobbins about and putting pins in. She put two pins in at what seemed like quite random places. The contrast between the two views of Queenie were too different, I felt, to be the same person. I'm quite happy to be proved wrong however. The glue was only on the ribbon, so I removed it and will replace with new. That was easy. The two bookmarks were next. I tried my 'old faithful' method of removing sticky with sticky. I tapped the glue spot with cellophane tape. A bit of the glue would stick to the tape with each tap and gently pull off. By repeated taps, I got all the glue off the sturdy bookmark. Then very carefully I worked at the delicate bookmark. Thankfully, it, bit by bit, came off with only one broken thread, and one diamond was pulled a bit crooked. Judiciously adjusting the threads brought it back to almost normal position. The little broken thread doesn't show, and I'll just leave it that way. The threads have been set in their positions for years, and stay there by habit. These glue spots were supposed to be removable..but I noticed that they would not come off the paper and plastic signs that had been put up. (I have learned that they were 'Zots'. I don't recommend them.) So, the biggest damage done was the broken clear ruler that had a lace strip inside it. I can find out the price of the rulers, and submit that (and the replacement ribbon) as my damage. There's no way to pay me for mental anguish. I reported the whole thing to the List to alert all of you to this modern hazard on setting up displays. When I left the lady, I had given permission to put the lace up with pins. The lady in charge was also there, and heard my statement, so she can verify the conversation. If you ever have to leave some lace for someone else to mount, be very specific on what you will and will not allow. The idea of using glue dots on fine fiber had never ever entered my mind, or I would have been more specific. This was the first time that I had not been involved with the display of my lace. Usually I set up the displays wherever I take it. I guess we can all live and learn. Thank you to all who had suggestions or commiserations. It's nice to have sympathetic friends. [lace] 18th Century lace pillows
Dear Arachne friends I have had a query about pillows from someone on my home ed list and wondered if anyone could help. I've cut and copied the question below and would be grateful for any input. snip>>> I am colouring in a drawing for decoupage, which I am going to put on one of the wooden storage boxes I have. It is a drawing by William Henry Pyne (1769-1843) from his series of rustic figures, and the one I am working on is a lady doing pillow lace. She is using one of those cylinder pillows. The question is, what colour would they have been, and what were they made of? This liquid is then extruded into an acid bath where further chemical reactions convert it back to cellulose. So, it is neither natural nor artificial, but a combination of both. hth Lesley in sunny Marple (and about time too) - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Clay Blackwell wrote: Hi Jacquie and others who have commented on the bamboo yarn... Rayon and bamboo are made from cellulose, a natural compound found in plant material, which is reacted with acetate to make the fibres for the fabric. I love the feel of yarn made from bamboo cellulose as it is softer and much less shiney than that made from other plant sources. (I have knickers made from bamboo which are very comfortable). The 'milk' yarn is made from the milk protein casein so is also a semi-natural product, although I think it's production has a lesser effect on the environment than rayon and bamboo yarn. hth Lesley fronm a very wet and windy Marple UK - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Help please - Lace Society Issue 182
I am trying to make the torchon edging designed by Anita Wilkinson on page 11 of the Lace Society magazine. I've only been making lace since February and although I've managed to work out the stitches, I've got stuck. I have reached the end of one side and now need to turn the corner. The bit that's puzzled me is what to do with the extra row of pricking between the roseground and the corner fan, and the double row of pricking between the two areas of roseground. Unfortunately there's onlya photograph of one edge, not the corner. I could probably work something out that would look OK, but I'd like to know the correct way of working this corner and would be very grateful if any of my new-found Arachne friends could help.
