[lace] Hiatus

2006-05-20 Thread Maxine Diffey
I too have had to stop making lace for 18 months or so. two weddings and
two hardanger tablecloths later, I can almost see my way clear to start
again. I finished the last cloth last Friday night, and I am very
pleased with it :-) now to go back to the remnant of a class on Honiton
from Sept 2004 - I only have one pillow (as yet) so I have to finish it
to start something else.

As for needle work projects, I have many WIPs (Works in Progress) -
adds variety to life, although I am trying to be more disciplined in
that too.

Happy lacing

[lace] Sewing Machines

2006-07-03 Thread Maxine Diffey
This is a fascinating thread..

My Mother had a singer treadle sewing machine, a jubilee model, which
she was able to put a motor on in the late 1950's, and it too had
(separately purchased) buttonhole attachment, which from memory moved
the fabric, not the needle.

My first sewing machine was a second-hand Elna, purchased from a friend,
who bought it off her mother. It was the second model of the Elna
cam-type domestic sewing machines, and was a real work horse. It was by
that time over 25 years old, and still going strong having sewn for a
family of four girls, and made canvas horse covers and sails!!. It had
a knee controlled accelerator and did all sorts of stitches using a
swing needle technique.

I replaced it with one of the last cam-driven Elna's in 1980 or
there-abouts. My "new" one is also going strong having clothed myself
and my family for the past 25 years or so.. Now it is down to repairs
more than anything, but I still enjoy it and have, in the past five
years made a couple of quilts using it. Never again, I don't like
patchwork/quilting, give me lace anyday!!

Maxine from New Zealand

[lace] I got a Bargain

2006-11-23 Thread Maxine Diffey
Good Morning Gentle Spiders,

I recently succumbed to temptation and joined Trade Me – a Kiwi auction
site, and bought three sets of Dryad lace making patterns, starting at
the very beginning with Torchon, then a set of Beds, and then a set of
Bucks, with a potted history of each technique included - they are in
pristine condition, i.e. brand new, and only one envelope had been
opened. They cost me a grand total of NZ$ 5.50 - $US3.68, or 1.92 Brit.
Pound. I am thrilled with them, in particular the second two sets,
being a novice!

[lace] What am I doing?

2007-03-12 Thread Maxine Diffey
I normally lurk with just the occasional message, and I know I am very
late with this thread, but as the list is so quiet, I thought I would
chip in.

I was given some lace knitting wool some 18 months ago by my DS and DIL,
and I have finally "had a go" - well, many 'goes', but I am finally up
and running!

I am using 3.5 mm needles with two ply wool in variegated colours! It
has been a very steep learning curve as I could not "see where I was
going" as far as the pattern went, but gradually it has worked out after
6 or 7 attempts. It says something for the quality of the wool that it
did not go 'fuzzy' as I pulled it undone and restarted so many times!

I do enjoy knitting, and also a challenging pattern is appreciated, but
this one has tested my patience! I don't think the resultant scarf will
be given away after all the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into
it so far!

Maxine from a wet New Zealand! Not that I am complaining as things had
got quite dry here, and it saves me having to water the garden!!

To let you know that Erica is on the West Coast of the South Island as far

I have several low necked T shirts, so I made an edging in Gutermann sewing

been well worn and washed in the machine.

[lace] Farmer John

2011-10-21 Thread Maxine Diffey
Farmer John lived on a quiet rural highway west of Lossiemouth. As time went
by, the traffic slowly built up at an alarming rate. The traffic got so heavy
and so fast that his free range chickens were being run over at a rate of
three to six a day.

ATT0ATT0ATT0

So this particular day Farmer John called the local police station and to
complain, "You've got to do something about all of these people driving so
fast and killing all of my chickens."

ATT0ATT0ATT0ATT0

"What do you want me to do?" asked the policeman.
"I don't care, just do something about those crazy drivers!"
So the next day the policeman had the Main Road 's Workers
Go out and erected a sign that said:

   SLOW:
SCHOOL CROSSING

ATT0ATT0ATT0ATT0

Three days later Farmer John called the policeman and said, "You've still
got to do something about these drivers. The 'school Crossing sign seems to
make them go even faster!"
So, again, the policeman sends out the Main Roads workers' And they put up a
new sign:

SLOW:
CHILDREN AT PLAY

ATT0ATT0ATT0

That really sped them up. So Farmer John called and called and called every
day for three weeks. Finally, he said to the policeman

"Your signs are doing no Good. Can I put up my own sign?"

The policeman said,

"Sure thing, put up your own sign.."

He was going to let Farmer John do just about anything
In order to get him off his back.

ATT0ATT0ATT0ATT0

The cop got no more calls from Farmer John.

Three weeks later, curiosity got the better of the copper
And he decided to give Farmer John a call.

" How's the
Problem with those drivers. Did you put up your sign?"

"Oh, I sure did," replied Farmer John, "and not one chicken
Has been killed since then. I've got to go. I'm very busy.."

He hung up the phone.

The policeman was really curious now and he thought to himself,

"I'd better go out there and take a look at that sign . it might
Be something that WE could use to slow down drivers..."

ATT0ATT0ATT0ATT0

So he drove out to John's farm house,

His jaw dropped the moment he saw the sign.

ATT0ATT0ATT0ATT0

It was spray painted on a sheet of plywood

NUDIST COLONY Slowdown and watch out for chicks!

 ATT0ATT0

Keep Smiling

[lace] does anyone know

2012-07-04 Thread Maxine Diffey
Does anyone know what this is?

http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=490892225

It is described as : a type of lacemaking made with Thesa Forms, from early
last century.

I am interested if this is still a craft that is practised today – there are
five photographs with the listing.

[lace] Status of Sr Claire and Thanksgiving

2012-11-21 Thread Maxine Diffey
Sister Claire is safe, but her health is such that she has had to leave
making bobbin lace, and is now trying lace knitting. I follow her blog,
hence why I know she is safe.

2006-02-02 Thread Maxine Diffey
We three Kiwi's on the list are in E12 time zone, if I am reading it
correctly.
