[lace] Metro Chapter Lace Day

2017-10-18 Thread Regina Haring
The Metropolitan Chapter of IOLI, based in northeastern New Jersey, is
looking forward to an expanded lace celebration from November 2 - 6.

Acclaimed lace teacher Kumiko Nakazaki will teach a workshop for four days:
Thursday and Friday, November 2 and 3, and then Sunday and Monday, November
5 and 6.

Saturday the 4th is open to the public, and Holly Van Sciver and Kathy
Kirchner will offer books and supplies for bobbin lace, tatting, crochet
and knitting. There will be a display of lace, demonstrations of
lacemaking, and a beginners class.

In addition to Kumiko's workshop, on Sunday Pat Morris will teach Idrija
lace.
Pre-registration is necessary for both workshops.

Saturday and Sunday will be held at the Elks Club in Westwood, New Jersey.

Re: [lace] Polish lace

2016-09-23 Thread Regina Haring
Hi, Susan -

Elizabeth Kurella's book "Guide to Lace and Linens" has an entry for
Czechoslovakian lace on pages 132 and 133. Poland is of course just north
of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

She does say that tape laces are common. and there's a picture of a Slovak
tablecloth edging in tape lace.

What about the national costume? Is lace any part of it? That's where we
see so much lace used in other parts of Europe.

What a lovely project!

Good idea, Helene!

But it says "designed in Hudson, Ohio Exclusively for Jo-Ann fabric and

Greetings, all -

Since I needed to go to JoAnn's anyway (the nearest is in Paramus, NJ) the
discussion about the paisley and spider fabric prompted me to go this
morning.

The bolt was already almost empty! I bought 2.5 yds, and while the regular
price was $9.99/yd there is a 30% off sale. What you can't tell from the
picture of the design in the download is the background color used for the
fabric, which is a warm light tannish color, making it a very attractive
fabric, even if like me you don't like spiders!

It will make a great looking pillow bag.

[lace] color of lace

2015-06-30 Thread Regina Haring
Greetings, all -

For over a year I have been volunteering a few hours a week at a local
history museum which was bequeathed a lace collection of over 400 pieces of
lace, of varying kinds and quality.

It has been a most enjoyable and educational experience to catalog and
describe these pieces, more of which have turned out to be handmade than I
thought at first glance.

I am about to begin to enter the information for each piece into a software
program developed for museums called Past Perfect. I can still make changes
in my descriptions as I am entering them, and what I need help with is
deciding how to describe the color of the lace. White is of course obvious,
but there are so many other shades. I know the threads we use are often
named bleached or half-bleached or unbleached, but I don't think those
terms would be appropriate for these finished pieces. Should I distinguish
- should I say off white, cream, ecru, beige? Then there are a few
with a distinctly peachy quality. I'd like to know if there is a standard
way that these colors are described in museum terminology.

Any help and comments appreciated!

[lace] missing messages

2015-06-16 Thread Regina Haring
I don't even like to think of how many messages from Jeri or Devon or
others I have missed because they went to my Spam folder and I neglected to
check there.

Gmail says in answer to the question why is this in Spam that if a name
is in my contact list, then the message will always go through. Well, not
so - Jeri and Devon are in my contact list, and while a personal message
would arrive with no problem, one from Arachne never does. They do come
through to my phone.

I wrote Gmail about this but don't hold out much hope that I'll get a reply.

Also this - maybe this involves a setting, but when I use reply in gmail
I do not see the message I am replying to and so do not have the
opportunity to shorten it - I don't even see a subject line that I could
change if necessary.

Re: [lace] Gender roles, Lacemaking

2013-03-29 Thread Regina Haring
Devon and all who chimed in on the male lacemakers/workers thread:

Thank you all for the interesting discussion that ensued. The laceworker
(passementwerker) from Valenciennes that I wrote about was called Jean
Monfort. He and his wife Jacqueline Moreau and their son Pierre indeed
came early to this country - they were on the first ship that came to New
Netherland with passengers, the Eendracht in 1624. The fact that his name
appears on a ship's manifest indicates that he owed the Dutch West India
Company for his passage - had he paid for his trip outright, his name would
not have appeared. They returned to the Netherlands for at least three
years, during which time their son married, and then came back to New
Netherland.

When Jean Monfort was born, Valenciennes was part of the Spanish
Netherlands, not France, and was therefore very Catholic. It appears that
the Monforts like many others who were Huguenots (French Protestants) did
not acknowledge this until they moved to Amsterdam where he joined the
Walloon Reformed Church.

Devon, I wrote to the folks who run Philipsburg Manor and Van Cortlandt
Manor in Westchester (NY) a few years ago, asking if they knew anything
about lacemaking among the early settlers, and they replied that they were
also interested but had not been able to find any indication that
lacemaking was pursued by the Dutch or anyone else here at an early date.
There are old roller pillows in some of the small museums, but they appear
to date from the 19th century, not earlier.

I have heard that the Netherlands were historically able to produce the
best thread for lacemaking, but that it was the Belgians who were more
involved in making lace.

  members
appear to be discussing lace making activities of the 19th century. A two
hundred year difference in time is significant.

I think that the term Lacemaker for a man may well mean an entrepreneur,
as in the case of the 17th century grave of the major entrepreneur in
Honiton where I think the term Lacemaker is used to describe him. But,
 might it
not be the case that such a person would know how to make lace? Wouldn't
 he
most likely learn the business from the bottom up, so that he can exercise
quality control and train the workers?

Re: [lace] Jean-Marie Leclair

2013-03-24 Thread Regina Haring
This raises a question that has always puzzled me - does this truly mean
that the men themselves were lacemakers, or that they were employed in the
business of lace in the sense that they were middlemen who bought lace from
the women who were making it and then re-sold it?

I came across this record of a man named Montfort who came early to America
and was a laceworker - I would guess that he found another trade after he
arrived in wild Manhattan/New Amsterdam. I believe there is another record
which refers to him in this way - don't have it to hand right now. Don't
know how I came across this entry, or who underlined it so heavily.

[lace] Vermeer's Painting

2011-10-17 Thread Regina Haring
Tracy Chevalier's historical novel Girl with a Pearl Earring, which is a
fictional account of one period in Vermeer's life, does refer to one of his
daughters working on her lace.
I asked Gunvor Jorgensen back when I was reading the book whether she
thought it would have been needle or bobbin lace, and she guessed bobbin
lace was more likely. Of course Tracy Chevalier may just have been taking
poetic license.

I'm not sure what the evidence is that the model is Vermeer's daughter, but
the fact that as an artist Vermeer held an ambiguous position in society,
and that he was financially imprudent does not negate the fact that he and
his family were part of the middle classes. Class is not equivalent ot
wealth - an impoverished aristocrat is still an aristocrat. Anyway, this
seems to me irrelevant. We - or the contemporary audience - look at the
picture without knowing anything about who the model was and what her
father's financial circumstances might be, and her dress and environs
 clearly place her.

Here is a more pertinent question, then, for those who know about the
social history of lacemaking in the Netherlands in this period. Why would a
young woman of this class be making lace? Would it be to decorate her own
clothing or that of her sisters (she appears to have a lace collar), or
 what?

In my own thinking I tend to distinguish between things that are lacey/lacy,
used as an adjective to describe things with holes (there's even lacy Swiss
cheese) - and *lace* as a noun, meaning a fabric you make beginning with a
strand of fiber from which you create patterns where openwork sections,
i.e.holes, are necessary to the design.

Happened to notice in the current IOLI Bulletin that the Powerhouse Museum
in Australia is sponsoring an International Lace Award. Their goal is to
redefine traditional expressions of lace and its design applications.

They say -

For the purposes of this award we define lace as: an openwork structure in
which the pattern of spaces is as important as the solid areas.

Thought this very broad definition was interesting!

Re: [lace] Article

2010-06-05 Thread Regina Haring
A wonderful article with lovely pictures, but once again, the old error
raises its ugly head:

A pattern is placed on a 'pillow' of straw or, these days, polystyrene, and
pins stuck into the pattern. Then the thread is wound around selected pins
and the bobbins interlaced and twisted.

It just seems to me that it shouldn't be *that* difficult to get the facts
across. I would hope and expect that anyone who has seen lacemaking
demonstrated would have a correct understanding of the process. Can you
think of anything more tedious and unsatisfying than trying to place pins
and then wind thread around them? Uggh!

Hi, Tess -

The project you are referring to appeared in three books by Annelies de
Kort - Van Zijderveld
from the Netherlands, called A Taste of Lace. Her website is
www.anneliesdekort.nl and I do see a little picture of the bobbin lace
pastries on the home page, tho it is not clickable.

We at the Metro Chapter of IOLI made quite of few of the delectable pastries
which were used as the grand prize at our Lace Day in 2005. Through the
generosity of the winner we have since been able to display them in various
library exhibits.

In fact I brought a few of those with the fruit on top to show to the pastry
maker at a local marvelous and authentic French pastry shop, because they
were absolutely identical to some pastry that he makes and sells!

Again this makes me wish that we at Metro had a website with photos of our
work - maybe soon.

remain on YouTube, and who makes the decision as to when it is taken off.
If I could be sure it will remain available for a good long time (and I

is add it to my Favorites list.

Does anyone know who decides when a video is taken off YouTube?

Re: [lace] Looking for lace group/teacher near East Chester, NY

2009-09-01 Thread Regina Haring
The Metro Chapter of IOLI is the closest group to Eastchester in
Westchester County, New York, and we would be happy to welcome your friend.
Our meetings and classes are held in Bergen County, NJ, where Gunvor
Jorgensen lived and taught for many years.

Meetings are usually in a home in the Westwood area of Bergen, and classes
are offered in Ridgewood. Apparently this is about a 45 minute trip from
Eastchester, and I'm not sure whether (a) going south to the George
Washington Bridge and then northwest to Westwood or Ridgewood, or (b) going
north in Westchester to the Tappan Zee Bridge and then south to the meeting
and class places - would be an easier or shorter trip. Actually these
locations in Bergen County are roughly due west of Eastchester, and if we
could only devise another way to cross the Hudson River, the trip would be
much shorter - as it is it depends on the hour and the traffic.

Our Lace Days in Westwood are November 7 and 8 this year, with vendors,
demos and an exhibit on Saturday and classes on Sunday. Perhaps your friend
could visit us at that time - we'd love to meet her.

Someone recently commented about the fact that conventions were never held
in this area, but actually the 50th anniversary convention of IOLI was held
at the Hilton Hotel in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ in 2003, and the hosts were the
Metro Chapter, Lost Art Lacers of Sussex, NJ and the Cranberry Lacers of NJ.

I am aware that there are some gals who gather to make lace in NYC with a
teacher, and I believe that they use the Spanish vertical lace pillow - they
are not connected with IOLI.

Re: [lace] Re: Lace Demonstration at Historic Sites

2009-08-21 Thread Regina Haring
The majority of the members of the Metro Chapter of IOLI are from Bergen
County, NJ. This is due in large part to the fact that the late and very
much missed Gunvor Jorgensen lived in Northvale and began the group. There
are a few of us from Rockland County, NY and other counties of NJ and even
one gal who comes by bus from NYC.

We do get opportunities to demonstrate lace making at historic houses in the
area and also are regulars at the Colonial Day held at the DeWint House in
Tappan. Like Mark, we just want to introduce folks to the craft of bobbin
lace, since most have people never heard of it before, so we don't feature
any particular style of lace. Members have also been asked to speak at
various other groups including a historic society, a spinners and weavers
group, the Christian Women's Club, and even a garden club (focus on floral
designs).

Costumes are sometimes appreciated - in a pinch a long apron that is full
enough to meet and tie at the back, worn with a simple blouse and perhaps
the addition of a shawl, makes an easy and effective costume (sorry, Mark!).

We know that bobbin lace was made in Ipswich, but have never been able to
find evidence of it being made in our area, which was strongly Dutch when
first settled. Apparently in Europe at that date it was in Belgium that lace
was mostly made, while the Netherlands provided them with excellent thread.
If anyone has any additional information on lace being made in the NY/NJ
area, we'd be grateful to have it.

[lace] are you new to lace?

2009-05-23 Thread Regina Haring
My maternal grandmother and my mother were knitters, crocheters, and
embroiderers. In fact the tease was that if you stood still long enough my
grandma would put a crocheted edging on you - everything, even the most
utilitarian things, had a fancy crocheted lace edging! I have a few hankies
and pillowcases with embroidery and crocheted lace trim that she made.

For years I attended a needlework fair at the Unitarian church in Paramus,
NJ, for which the late Miriam Forbes was the driving force. Miriam made huge
bobbin lace hangings for the church, using nails for pins - they are
wonderful.

While the focus of the fair was embroidery of all kinds, the Metro Chapter
of IOLI always demonstrated there, and for years I was awed and fascinated
by their beautiful work, and intimidated as well. Prior to seeing their
demonstrations I wouldn't have had any idea how this delicate lace was
created. When the time was right, I began studying with the late Gunvor
Jorgensen and have loved it ever since.

During 1996 four of us had a lace tour with Liz Bartlett and visited all
the
Midlands museums. One museum had a display of a lacemaker sitting in a
cottage making lace and Liz was most upset by the display as she did not
consider it a true reflection of the conditions lacemakers worked under.
I
think this was the Luton Museum and it was the most charming museum of
them
all. She said the room was too grand, the lacemaker was dressed too
smartly
and she also was wearing a lace collar which was unlikely. She was also
working on a Beds piece with a Bucks piece lying around - both difficult
patterns and she said any lacemaker ever worked only one or two patterns
in
her life and did not go from one kind of lace to another as we do. We ,
ignorami from South Africa, thought it was a lovely display!!! We
thought

that most people would just enjoy the display but Liz said that being a
museum it should be factually correct. One museum had a lovely display
of
pincushions. I have all this on video but the video player has decided
to
stop working so I cannot check to see which museum it was. But I do
think

that I saw the bobbins because Liz then gave a talk on the hanging
bobbins.

Factually correct or not, it was a most enjoyable trip. How does the
saying
go - Been there, done that, forgotten most of it!!

To me this lace has the characteristics of a very simple Chantilly -
couldn't that be a Tulle ground? The motifs are outlined in gimp and look
like half stitch (not linen) and there are picots on the edge - all

There is currently a listing on eBay for a length of black lace. It is
very simple in design, and seems to be fairly unevenly worked - signalling
the likelihood that it is handmade. It is being sold from Pennsylvania.
I wonder if this is some Ipswich lace?

Does anyone out there know enough about this lace to make a judgement on
that?

Thanks for your ideas on this. I'm totally in the dark when it comes to
Ipswich.

Re: [lace] Princess Lace Machine

2007-10-21 Thread Regina Haring
As was mentioned in a previous message, the difference with the recent
machine that sold was that it came with 96 perfectly good looking bobbins,
which had to contribute to the price it fetched.

Carol et al,
I have looked at the pictures, and the pillow seems to be in good order
but ...

The bidders must have been crazy or didn't realize what they were bidding
on. These things are only any good for yardage and having used mine twice
I shall never use it again.

Actually I have 2 of them which I picked up in rural Tasmania in the
1980s. I recall giving $70AUS each then - which was a fortune, considering
I didn't even know how to make BL at that time.

I shall certainly be putting mine on Ebay when I get around to it and will
be prepared to ship anywhere as long as buyer is prepared to pay postage.

Can a lace pillow really be worth all that amount of money?I know we
are a bit spoiled in the UK with suppliers of all sorts of things, but I
can't believe that anyone here would spend as much as that.It looks
quite a lovely piece of work, even though the pictures didn't seem very
bright and clear, but some of my roller pillows would, I am sure, be just
as efficient.

So - please tell me what I have obviously missed - maybe I am just a tad
dimmer than the average...

Re: [lace] Pincushion idea

2007-03-13 Thread Regina Haring
A couple of weeks ago Martha Stewart had a demonstration of how to make
darling teacup pincushions - and I can't find the directions on her website
now, though I did locate them at the time.

She used felted wool as from old sweaters, rolling a couple of thicknesses,
and then using say a cuff from a patterned sweater that had been felted as
the outside. The handle of the cup and the saucer were made from that
knitting you did with a spool as a kid, we called them horsetails or
rattails - the handle was shaped and glued on, and the saucer was made by
coiling the knitted tube in a flat spiral. She decorated the top with a few
little 'leaves' from felted fabric - it might make you think of whipped
cream on hot chocolate.

To use it for lace pins it might be good to top it with a piece of real wool
felt. But they were really very pretty when made in nice colors!

This is a real goodie for a goodie bag :))
I wonder if the cupcake could be knit oversize with worsted wool - then
the

whole thing made to shrink, that is, felted.
Then it could be stuffed firmly with fleece, and pins would stay put.
Hm, might try one some time.

Re: [lace] Highland year of culture - Inverness Scotland

2007-02-10 Thread Regina Haring
How absolutely beautiful - what a gorgeous design! I would love to see it
completed. Can you post photos and keep us in touch with your progress?

Don't feel bad about being renamed Highland Lacers - there's another group
listed there called the Highland Quiters and that would be worse. I hope
they don't live up to their name, or the work will never be complete ;-)

We are celebrating the Highland year of culture in 2007 and the Inverness
Lace
Group is participating in a very exciting project, namely making lace for
a

large piece of community textile art. Lacemakers, quilters, spinners,
weavers, dyers, feltmakers and embroiderers are all contributing towards
this

piece of work.

Last night, at our monthly meet, Joan Baxter - a texstyle artist - who
designed this piece of work came to speak to Inverness Lace Group about
our
lace contribution. If you want to read more about the project you can go
to
the following website: http://www.highlandarttextiles.co.uk/index.htm.
We
will be making the wind turbines you can see under the third panel (the
last

panel on the right).

The project will be unveiled on the weekend of the 31st August, 1st and
2nd

September and during this time members of the public will be invited to
classes held by the various 'disciplines' (for want of a better collective
word grin) which brings me to my request:

Inverness Lace Group (or Highland Lace Group as the project renamed us)
will

need to have a lace tutor on hand for Sunday - someone who can perhaps
showcase his/her own lace work, hold an informal class etc. Any
volunteers
from the British contingent of Arachne? We can contribute to your costs
and

provide accommodation.

Please contact me off list if you are interested

Re: [lace] Threads and pins

2006-11-14 Thread Regina Haring
I learned bobbin lace from the late Gunvor Jorgensen, and we always loop the
patterns she pricked for us (lucky us!) completely around the roller and
overlapped them and firmly pinned them down, cutting off excess pricking. I
can't imagine not pinning the edges of the pricking to the pillow every
couple of inches as it goes around.

Very carefully line up the repeats and put several pins straight through
both thicknesses of pricking at matching spots to hold it in place while
pinning the edges to the roller - then remove the temporary pins from the
pattern section. For instance, the center of a spider was an excellent and
easy place to match the overlap. If you can't make it match perfectly
because of the length of the repeat, pad the roller with a thickness (or
even two) of felt to bring it up to the size needed to make the repeats
match perfectly. Be sure and have the overlap be the top layer as the
roller turns so you can continue to work smoothly round and roundand
round

I bought a beautiful roller pillow in Montreal, and am about to start a
pattern on it. The pricking will be exactly as Malvary described, a loop
larger than the roller.

Here's my question: I've been cautioned that with this method there is a
risk that the pricking might not stay exactly vertical but might
eventually work its way slightly diagonal.

Is this really a problem/risk? If so, how can I avoid it?

Thanks,

Hi - while I would agree with this description for a flat, bolster, block
or
cookie pillow, it is very difficult to put cover cloths front to back on
the

pillow when you are using a roller pillow.

When using a roller pillow one of the best methods is to make the pattern
into a loop, larger than the diameter of the roller and then as you unpin
from the back and re-pin at the front, the pins go back into a different
place in the roller each time. If you are making a long length and you
have

the pricking exactly the same size as the roller the holes will gradually
get looser as the pins go into the same place over and over. This is
particularly noticeable with a foam pillow.

Re: [lace] Jana Novak question

2006-10-21 Thread Regina Haring
I feel sure that what Jana means is to cover your pillow with the plastic
*kitchen* film ( what we call Saran Wrap in the US, whatever the brand),
very thin plastic film, and just work through it. This is in addition to
what we call blue sticky paper (the technical term, g) and its purpose is
to protect the cover of your pillow from the starch when your pieces are
finished. I hadn't thought of that, and just put paper towels over the
pillow around the design area to keep it clean when spraying.

When you make the figures in her Nativity sets, she has you starch them
prior to taking them off the pillow. Anticipating that, she instructs
you to cover your pricking with plastic foil before you begin to make
the lace.

My question is, what does she mean by the plastic foil? I usually
cover my prickings with the blue film, and assuming I do the same with my
Nativity prickings, is there any need for any other plastic?
