[lace] Re: Le Pompe 1559

2008-04-20 Thread Ruth Bean
As Tamara says there has been only one edition and one impression (1983) of
Le Pompe 1559. This sold for £9 and the ISBN was 0 903585 16 2 (current
13-digit equivalent is 978 0 903585 16 3 - with different check digit).

We still have a few copies available which were put aside with minor
imperfections like marks on the covers, yet
on Amazon UK today two used copies were being offered at £88 and £134
respectively (+ shipping), which may be why the vendor (in Sue's case)
selected a 'competitive' £49.99!

Unfortunately internet book prices can be very misleading for the unwary. We
often see our books offered on the internet at many times their list price,
even when still in print and available from us. For example today Amazon UK
showed used copies of two of Barbara Underwood's Traditional Beds Lace books
at over 5½ times list price, alongside Amazon's new copies at near list
price!

[lace] Re: lace travel Dalmatia

2007-08-29 Thread Ruth Bean
I can testify that the island of Pag is renowned for both its excellent
cheese and its fine lace, as I was born a little further down the coast in
Split, and I still have a small piece given to my mother. The island itself
lies just north of Zadar along the northern coast of Dalmatia and is part of
Croatia. It is now connected to the mainland by a road bridge. There are
several websites: 1. the local tourist board www.pag-tourism.hr 2. the
town of Zadar Tourist board www.tzzadar.hr and 3. The County Tourist board
www.zadar.hr There are references to lacemaking 'in the alleys of the Pag
old town', but I think that Pag lace might be on sale on the market in Zadar
or at the Tourist Offices where English will be spoken.

|
|
| The island of Pag has a major needlelace school. Pag lace looks rather
| like Punto in Aria or Reticella--ornate geometric array of bars covered
| in buttonhole stitches, all done in sewing-thread (okay, a bit thicker,

|
| The island of Burano is part of the Venice-area islands and is famous
| for its needlelace, too. What I've seen was heavier than the Pag lace,
| but it was more modern -- figural and colored rather than geometric and
| white. Really nice, too.

[lace] 'The Needlework of Mary Queen of Scots' by Margaret Swain

2007-01-30 Thread Ruth Bean
Snipped:
From Jeri Ames
Good preparation would be a reading of Margaret Swain's The Needlework of
Mary Queen of Scots, Van Nostrand Reinhold 1973. Have seen it in
 paperback,
which would have been a later edition. It is a classic.

From Ian Chelle Long
I didn't see the original posting, but if it was a craft-related book it
 is
probably The Needlework of Mary Queen of Scots (ISBN 9780896762480) by
Margaret Swain. Its about A$40 over here and is on my wish list, it looks
 like a really interesting book.

In 1986 we collaborated with Margaret Swain to produce a new paperback
edition of this book. The original 1973 Van Nostrand Reinhold hardback
edition was already long out of print.
Our edition has been reprinted three times since including minor updates
(the last time was 2004). It is currently available, except in North
America, as ISBN 9780903585224 (0903585227). In Australia it is available
from the distributor Keith Ainsworth Pty Ltd, Penrith, NSW 2750.
In 2004 we also supplied a separate paperback edition (for sale in North
America) to a US co-publisher, Quite Specific Media Group Ltd, Hollywood, CA
90046, from whom it is available as ISBN 9780896762480 (0896762483).

I hope this will avoid possible confusion over the availability and
different editions of this book.

I google for this and found a listing giving the address as: 51, William
Street. Since I can't remember the address (could take you there) and I'm
not
sure where I have put my Edinburgh street map, can anyone tell if this is
a new

address or not? And aol knocked me off before I could explore the site.

Part III contains the Working Notes for the patterns (see page vi of the
main book) and is a necessary part of the book. We still have a few spare
and can arrange to send you one if you contact us directly.

I obtained a copy of A Manual of Bedfordshire Lace, but the Part III that
is
supposed to be in the back pocket is missing. Can anyone tell me what
exactly is in Part III, and can I use the book without it? From the sounds
of it, all the instructions on how to do the various parts are in it and
I'm
afraid I won't be able to use the book. If that is the case, does anyone
have ideas on how I can obtain a copy of Part III?

Thanks,

[lace] Reprinting Miss Channer's Mat

2003-09-07 Thread Ruth Bean
The original of this posting was sent to the list over a week ago, but
accidentally sent from an unregistered address and not posted.

We (and others) have been astonished at recent exchanges on Arachne. A few
members have been happy to discuss us and our business - even how to
appropriate our copyright material, which in law is our intellectual
property - often on the basis of wrong information, including an imaginary
1,000 print run! We wonder how other members would react at seeing their own
activities discussed or their property being 'cased' on line in open forum.
Talk of 'greedy and uncaring' publishers 'burying' Miss Channer's
'legacy', and other imaginative speculation, suggests ignorance of the
realities of publishing, especially for a small specialist house such as
ours, and of copyright law. Moreover, it ignores the recognised contribution
Ruth Bean Publishers has made both to the revival of the craft since 1971,
and to the standards of text and production for lace books.
It was after all OUR initiative to prepare the Mat kit in the first
place, and to publish it with Anne Buck's 'In the Cause of English Lace'
(which itself includes a fine book by Miss Channer). Without this, it is
most unlikely that either would have been available at all, and the Mat was
available for a full 10 years.
As far as reprinting is concerned, we consider our publications for
reprinting whenever we can identify an economic demand, and we seek the
views of our supplier customers, as is customary. This applies equally to
the Mat and we'll advise the list and those who have written to us of any
developments, but we do prefer to make our own decisions. It is our business
and our funds we risk, but we are in the business of disseminating, not
suppressing knowledge.
