[lace] treating raw wood bobbins? other male lace makers?

2007-06-20 Thread Simon Maynard
I have just bought some raw wood bobbins from the USA, previously all my
bobbins have been bought in Australia, and have been plastic. Do I need to
seal these wooden bobbins with anything before spangling them? I wanted to
find out before starting in with the beads and wire, as spangling is not
something I enjoy enough to do twice, especially on about 4 dozen bobbins.

Hoping someone here can help me.

Also does anyone know of any other male lace makers?
Thanks
Simon Maynard

I think you are referring to anti-oxidants.

., and what ever the

doo-dads are called it's the same as whats in fruit. i forgot what
they are called also, but they are in the order of highest amount to
least amount: 1. chocolate, 2. wine, 3. fruit, and i don't know what
the other ones are.

Re: [lace-chat] Re: coffee and tea preferences

2005-09-22 Thread Simon Maynard

Simon here,
I'm mainly a coffee drinker (prefer Nescafe instant, or shopmade
cappucchino), drunk white with no sugar.I can't drink black coffee.

However, I do sometimes drink tea, only black with no sugar. When I do, I
enjoy the variety of Twinings teas (Russian Caravan especially). So if I run
out of milk, I drink tea.

I am totally a cat person, can't live with dogs at all.

[lace] Lace books on Australian Ebay-advice needed for beginner of the rusty variety

2005-07-04 Thread Simon Maynard
Hi,
I'd like an opinion on a couple of lace books currently on the australian ebay
(I can't buy overseas as I don't have a credit card). One is knotted lace-
does anyone know what on earth that is? Advice on whether they are worth a
beginner buying would be appreciated
Anyway they are here
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=82720item=82030399
73rd=1

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=19158item=82029850
60rd=1

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=19158item=82028639
92rd=1 to me this one looks like a knitting stitch holder, I'm sure my
mother had some and she didn't do lace

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=19158item=82025715
80rd=1

for those who are interested, there are also some lovely looking bobbin blanks
for turning (love woodwork, but that's a bit ambitious for me) and a book on
miniature woodwork including bobbin turning, that has sensibly been listed in
lace

Hoping for advice
Thanks
Simon

[lace] Help for a very rusty beginner?

2005-07-01 Thread Simon Maynard
Hi, I learned bobbin lace for a very short time many years ago (um, about 20
years), fortunately I still have pillows, bobbins etc. What I don't have as
the two I had died because they were left on a pillow and somehow got rusty,
is any very simple patterns for a complete beginner, or instructions on the
very basic movements/stitches (not sure of the right word here).
Is anyone able to perhaps point me towards something online for beginners,
or have some kind of pattern they could share that is very basic? I'm not
sure what kind of lace I was learning before, except that it had a straight
edge on the right and a curved one at the left side, and I did actually get
as far as making the edging for a whole hanky once.

Help?
