[lace] booking teachers
We have Lace days in Utah in July the second week (Monday through Wednesday) and we meet in Fairview and we have never had a problem with getting teachers and vendors but all of a sudden IOLI is moving their days for the convention up each year and now they are infringing on our lace days. Does anyone else have this problem? How far up is IOLI going to be moving the convention? Does anyone know what the date is that they are aiming for? Why not just announce that in the year 20-- convention will be help on () then the rest of us could make our plans, instead of worrying about when it is going to be in 2, 3 or 4 years? Is it a big secret? Re: [lace] Teaching antics
I had a bad experience with a half day class. The class was explained in the IOLI manual as beginner to experienced taught both morning and afternoon. Little did I know that you got all the instruction in the morning and the two of us who took the afternoon class were ignored. The teacher told us that all the instruction was printed on papers hanging around the class on the walls. Then on the last day of instruction she said that she would not be teaching, that she and her friends were going to be have some wine in the back of the room, so we should just go ahead and lace. NEVER took a class from her again, and needless to say, I do not have any desire to learn that type of lace. Becca - Original Message - From: L. E. Weiss weiss@mindspring.com To: lace lace@arachne.com Sent: Thursday, August 21, 2014 6:31:07 PM Subject: [lace] Teaching antics Sallie, I hope you reported the antics of that teacher who cut your bobbins. What a horrific experience. No one has a right to treat anyone that way, where one is not willfully being disruptive or uncooperative. I had one IOLI instructor who appeared to have no interest in teaching me from the very beginning (I think I was the only 1/2 day student in the class). I did my best for 3 days and spent the last full day in my good class. I will never give her a second chance. I've been in another situation where a teacher was playing favorites and being very hard on someone else in the class. It's not supposed to be boot camp. Some instructors need drama to feed ego, but they and the event organizers should be informed that this does not further the goal of building the lacemaking community. It's very hard to speak up in small groups sometimes (and almost impossible to confront a bad instructor personally as a student), but it's important to praise the great instructors and point out those whose approaches do nothing to help the sponsoring organization and lacemaking in the long run. If you are having a bad time with a teacher, chances are someone else got burned too. And if you see someone else being mistreated, try to offer them support and report the circumstances to the organizers. Glad you persevered with lace and found great teachers like Sylvie and Lia. lacers, I am need of input. In the Lace Express magazine 3/213 there is a lace square I am trying to do and I am befuddled. The picture is on page 38, top left. The pricking is on pg 28. If I start at the top of the fan and work my way to the center of the square I end up with 2 pr of bobbins at the center. Most squares do not have one line of pins dots going to the center at the corners, there is usually two. This one has only on at each corner and so I am having a duh moment. Please help me. I have 3 Dryad 18 inch domed (cookie) pillows all now with soft squidgy middles and a 2o/22? inch flat round one which I am about to use in place of the domed one, not much used yet. All are polystyrene commercially made. I am considering whether to buy another 18 domed one to replace all three old ones but when looking in the UK I only found one of the three sites I looked at with 18 domed, most of them were various sizes of flat round. I Cant Manage With The Staw Pillows which are just too heavy for me to lift about or to rest on my legs which I need to put up part of most days. If I/When I buy a new pillow I want to be able to protect it and use it to keep it in the best useable condition that I can from the very start. What do you put over to protect the pillow but allowing it be ok to put pins in and out? The first one I did put a towel over the top under the cloth cover and it hurt like crazy putting pins in, so that was no good (no idea where that idea came from). Each pocket will easily hold two pairs. There's room between the double row of bobbin holders for things like thread, puller/pusher, scissors, etc. Other inserts have larger pockets in place of the bobbin pockets intended for needle/other craft items instead of bobbins. I believe there's also one with a combination of bobbin and larger pockets. They are expensive, but, in my view, worth it. Re: [lace] There must be a better way!!
-I use the ones I make myself that I crochet. It holds as many bobbins as I want and then I stack them. Bobbins never fall out or change places. Instructions. chain as long as you want, I do 40. Single crochet back . The next row is double crochet skip 1 double crochet repeat to the end. Single crochet the next row on each double crochet and space. Repeat the last 2 rows again and there you go. Becca I use the tongue depressor/elastic band method a lot. It only takes a couple seconds to scoop one under a group of bobbins and hook the band over the other end. Then the bundles stack up fairly well, or at least lean against the pile of bundles. I guess, since I'm used to doing it, I seldom have a band not fasten, though I've known a few to fly through the air across the room if I don't hang on to them just right. I've tried layers of cloth but wasn't happy with it. I do it only in a pinch. Your question brought to mind the bobbin holder I got in Europe. It's a long U-shaped piece of wood with a long pin sticking out of the solid end. It's designed to scoop up a cluster of bobbins, and then be pinned upright on the pillow. It's a variation on the long brass pins used to scoop up bobbins and hold them vertically. In the U-shaped holder, the bobbins cannot fall out or get out of order. If I had more than one, it would be fun to test the theory. Maybe someone in Europe who has used these could comment. Alice in Oregon -- where we had a partly gray day but no rain.
