RE: [lace] Genealogist?

2016-11-18 Thread mouracreek
Result of a quick and dirty hunt (and therefore not genealogically valid [could
be figments of fancy of the researchers or poorly researched or just copied from
other such sources]):
Richard Dillingham from Bedford, born ca 1811 (or March 1810), Father Joseph
Dillingham, Mother Alice Holmes, siblings listed include sisters Amelia, Harriet
and Anne, brothers James and William [and possibly a Joseph as well]. Caught
housebreaking at age 23. 5'7" tall, stout build, brown hair, sentenced to life
but commuted to transportation for life. Transported to Tasmania on the
"Katherine Stewart Forbes" , had a friend write home to tell his family that 4
years after arrival he was within a mile of Hobart, drove a cart to market, went
to Victoria after Conditional Pardon and died there at age 65. Letter home say
he had a daughter in Oz called Anne but not married to the mother.

Here is one google hit:

The member is also a genealogist of some expertise and I am in great need of
help as I try and unravel the English life of "Richard Dillingham" a
Bedfordshire man sentenced to Transportation in Australia.

My problem is his family and life in England before he was transported. I have
accessed some Bedford sites, that paint a very confusing picture of the man, was
he married or not? Did he have children (illegitimate or not?)

RE: [lace] Mystery object

2015-02-04 Thread mouracreek
The pic doesn't show up on The Lace Guild site but if you click on the name of
the lady who asked the question and go to her home page on Fb then multiple pics
for the object can be seen.

I doubt very much that it can have anything to do with making of bobbin lace.
The metal tabs on each corner would snag thread and the3 brass(??) posts that
stick up proud of the surface on each side and then another down the bottom
would also get in the way of thread and bobbin placement. And then there is the
fact that it has the hanging wire on the back. whatever it is, it looks to
me like it's mean to be hung on a wall.

In Australia, we call charity/thrift shops 'Op' shops (derived from
'Opportunity' shop).

Subject: [lace] Mystery object

Recently a photo of a mystery object has been posted on The Lace Guild's
Facebook page. It was suggested to the buyer that it might be a place pillow, B
and could we confirm it. B I don't have a clue what it is, apart from not a
lace pillow, but in the past when weird 'lace' items appear on eBay there is
usually someone on arachne who recognises it. B I apologise for not being able
to work out how to get a direct link for that page but if anyone else can,
please post it.

It was bought from a thrift store which to me means Canada or America, but might
include Australia. B In the UK they're called charity shops. B It's possible
that it's a country specific item.B

Mr Google says that there are luggage lockers at Cairns Airport but it looks
like it might get to be a bit expensive if left for too long but that probably
depends upon the 'discount' they offer for longer holdings:

RE: [lace] The royal lacemaker

2014-10-08 Thread mouracreek
Jeri and anyone else who may be interested:

You don't need to wait for the book to become available in your country.

The book "The Royal Lacemaker" by Linda Findlay can be bought from the Book
Depository for $Aus11.97 - that is
$US10. 44 although that is the paperback price.

They ship worldwide with no charge at all for postage. I buy lots of books from
them and their service is consistently excellent.

'"The Royal Lacemaker is an overseas book not available here. As soon as it's
out, we could do an overseas order, but it will be close to thirty US dollars
for a paperback."

RE: [lace] Annoying pnctuation.. test two in html

2014-08-22 Thread mouracreek
You are indeed right about downloads limits Brian! I also recall that in the
'olden days' of computer usage, using HTML was not done by any competent user
because it was the way that viruses could be transmitted to home computers. I
still use plain text as a matter of choice no doubt because that memeory lurks
and is still a strong one.

On download: I live in rural Australia and we've tried all sorts of ISPs and
VISPs and various ways of being connected including satellite. At the moment
the only one that will work and give any sort of vague ability to cope with the
modern speed needed for download is the mobile phone network (which I think
would be called 'cell phone' in the US). This means it costs us a silly amount
of money if we ever go over the limit each month. We can afford it but we
prefer not to go over our limit. In comparison to our Asian neighbouring
countries Australia is very much like a third world country when it comes to
both cost and availability of mobile phone coverage outside big cities. I've
seen people working in paddy fields using their mobiles but 40 minutes drive
from our Federal Parliament and we can't use our mobile phones here despite
being a le to get a mobile service on our computer so long as we place the
computer in one spot beside a certain window which faces a distant tower.

I don't subscribe to the Australian lace list because when I was subscribed
there was too much chat and I can't afford to waste my download on what others
are planning to have for dinner.

I do recall in the early days of the list it was -and probably still is-
important for us to trim our mail as many did not have good computers and small
download limits. Plain text I suspect was the only form we could use then. I
have to say the arguments for this still stand as this is an international list
and not everyone has *or can afford* generous internet bandwidth.

RE: [lace] Care of fabrics - 1940s style

2014-04-08 Thread mouracreek
I really enjoy these older books and the recipes they contain and over the
decades have collected a few. I also have used quite a few of the hints and
tips they contain and found that most of the granny tips work. I've not heard
of such a use for ground rice but have long known about the hot bran treatment
for tweed, furs, upholstery etc. I've never had to use it though as I don't own
tweed or furs and most of my upholstery is either leather of soft covers that
can be washed.

Another of those older remedies was the use of wadded up white bread to remove
marks from wallpaper

-Original Message-

"The government's hope was that people would reuse and repair old garments
rather than insisting on buying new outfits. The WI offered advice on how to
give old garments a new lease of life including rubbing hot bran into tweed
skirts and jackets, cleaning white materials with ground rice and using powdered
magnesia to clean delicate fabrics such as lace, embroideries, white kid and
suede gloves Oil of eucalyptus would revive jaded silk and faded crepe de
chine.Grandmother's recipes for cleaning clothes were proposed but sounded
very expensive: 'For cleaning silk mix well together three ounces of
strained honey, two ounces of castile soap and half a pint of gin.'"
