[lace] Early Laces

2017-08-21 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti.
I have just started an Early Lace from Rosemary Shepherd’s book. It is an
edge- but I have repeated it, (footside to footside) to make a double si9ded
piece. It seems to be working OK!!
Gil Dye has another book out now, I think - #5 in the series? Where can one
get it? – Can one get it directly from her? I seem to have lost the URL to
her web site – and Mr Google can’t seem to find it!! Grrr! Yes I know
there is a great write-up by Jeri and it will be in the Archives, but I
don’t seem to be able to fine the Archives at the moment. More Grrr!!

I love the Early Laces, and now, with this bad eye that surgery made worse I
feel the early laces may be all I can make these days – putting up a pin
Where Necessary, rather than in properly defined pinholes!!
I rather like a pattern I have with “feathers” but that takes specific
pins in holes, so I have left that till I get more used to not having good 3D
perspective!

I have happy memories of the class I took with Gil a couple of years ago, and
hope to add to my collection of her books. They are gems – not just for the
lace patterns, but for the History she writes, too.
The History of Lace is a fascinating subject, and to be able to make the lace
from those times is Great.

I recently did a class with rosemary Peel on the Early Tatting – but I am
glad we tat in today’s way, though, not how they did it long ago

Regards from Liz. in Melbourne Oz.

Re: [lace] Early laces book errata

2012-09-10 Thread AGlez
Thank you very much, Liz, for this information. I have already printed the
pages. So, in the future, if I want to make something of the book, I will
have the corrections there.

On the other hand, although it is very probable that I never do anything of
the book, I must say that it is an excellent study of the early laces as
well as of the materials used for making bobbin lace. And, although many
things said in the book we have already heard of them separately, the good
thing is that we are able to read them all together in a same text. So,
after reading the book, I have been able to connect ideas I had read, and
that are now linked.

I am always happy when somebody publishes a book like Rosemary Shepherd's,
as there are not many new books on bobbin lace research. I really like this
one.

Best regards from Antje González, in Spain.

Re: [lace] Early laces. - also frustration !!!

2009-08-16 Thread Maureen Bromley

Hi Carol

It may be that the thread has gone a little brittle. Try putting the
thread in a steamy bathroom for a few hours to see if this revives it. I
have done this on a number of occasions and it has helped.

I was at a course doing Honiton lace a few years ago when it was very hot.
At each break, coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, we put a slightly
damp cloth (I think it was a white hankie or tissue because you don't want
the colour to run from the cover cloths) over the work and the threads to
stop the thread drying out and breaking.Obviously not at nighttime as it
does not want to get too damp because that brings problems of its own..

Re: [lace] Early laces. - also frustration !!!

2009-08-14 Thread Carol

HI Liz and Hina - et al,

I gave a wry smile when I read about not liking the frustration of too much
of the same disaster! One of my students is making one of Jenny Hester's
lovely wall-hangings, and is using Madeira thread, which I recommended, and
which I very often use, with no problems at all. However, my student is
experiencing problems with the cream thread, which is breaking far too
often - maybe bought from a supplier who keeps it on the stall for too long,
or in sunlight, or some other disastrous venue for threads. She is still
continuing with it, but I am sure I would have given up long since, and used
the scissors.

On a happpier note, I contacted the makers and, although we hadn't a clue
who the supplier was, they kindly sent another reel, so by the time we get
back to classes after the summer break, I am hoping she will be finding this
new reel a lot less trouble!

Gina, I like a challenge too, - but not one that gets me too frustrated. I am
prepared to go back, and undo to a certain extent, but when it constantly
happens at every repeat or every few minutes, then the Fun goes out of it, -
and the lace goes out the window - well almost! :))

I take on challenges all the time - but Fun challenges, not Grr!
ones!!!

You also say Flight costs from Pittsburgh to Portland are prohibitive Well,
try them from Melbourne, Australia!! :))
I am thinking about the Portland Convention, next year - Just thinking at this
stage, though I did happen to mention it to DH - just in passing...!!! :))

Re: [lace] Early laces....and Oregon!

2009-08-13 Thread Vicki Bradford
I'm anxious to see Rosemary's new book too as I am another early lace
enthusiastand I second the mention of Lenka's wonderful
interpretations in fine silver and copper. I was one of the lucky ones
who got to take two classes with her (Ithaca and Denver) before she
stopped teaching. But I must askwhat is it with Oregon and fiber of
late? Is there something in the water? Every time I turn around, I hear
of a fiber event which is going to be in Oregon! The IOLI convention
next summer, the 1st ever Sock Summit (a knitters' event) this
summer, and SOAR (Spin-Off Autumn Retreat sponsored by Spin-Off
Magazine for handspinners...) this fall. H. I think I must be
destined to go out there! Like Liz, I've started dropping hints to
my DH too. vbg

[lace] Early laces

2009-08-12 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
Gina, Noelene, has got in first!! I was about to mention Rosemary Shepherd's
new book on the Early laces. It has a few patterns and very clear working
diagrams, and a lot of history about the early laces, threads, etc. A very
interesting read.

Like Noelene, I am trying out one of her patterns, - on my little travel
pillow, - in Presencia Finca Metallic thread.

Rosemary's book compliments Tamara's work shown in the IOLI bulletin. If you
want to make some of the early laces, - then these are the best 2 sources you
can find, I think. Le Pompe has Some instuctions, but I have learned far more
from Rosemary and Tamara, - and can now understand the wood cut patterns
better, and understand how they made their lace in those far off days.

I love the Reticella- type laces - both bobbin and needle made, (much
easier!!) and now these 2 ladies have come up with such clear instructions and
diagrams, I can really get going on the bobbin lace variety, - and enjoy
making them!

After all, Our lacemaking, these days, is purely done for our own pleasure, so
enjoying the making is a large part of the craft. If it is a hassle to get it
right, then it is no fun, and defeats the whole purpose!.
