[lace] Seven Competition Visitors Award

2007-09-28 Thread Laceandbits
I have just had an e-mail from one my friends and students, Jill Harward, an
Arachne lurker, to say she is surprised to discover that her exquisite Seven
Years of Plenty Milanese lace entry into the Lace Guild's Seven competition
has won the Visitors Award.

I am not at all surprised, as it is an amazing piece of lace based on a
traditional English corn dolly. There is now a photo of it added to the Seven
Competition Gallery on the Lace Guild web site.  Click on it to enlarge it;
every
single grain of wheat is made separately with a fine rolled edge.

She started it on the design soon after she won the John Bull Trophy in the
Myth or Mystery competition three years ago, and she worked on it steadily
until it was finished early this year. There was then much consultation with
Pat
Read, myself and a whole class full of other students as to what fabric she
should mount it on and what frame to use, as it is a big piece of lace which
only just crept into the size restrictions.

I know she won't 'blow her own trumpet' but I am happy to do it for her.
Thank you to everyone who voted for her!

[lace] Seven exhibition

2007-09-09 Thread Sue
On Saturday 16 members of the Norfolk Lacemakers group travelled to
Dudley to see the Seven exhibition, it was well worth the journey
the exhibits were superb. What a great selection of lace, needle,
bobbin, tatting to name but a few, one of my favourites was by one of
our Arachne group Shakespeare's flowers by Elizabeth Ligeti, it was
beautiful. It was a good exhibition only marred I felt personally by
yards of blue plastic net and bright yellow material adorning everything
which I felt detracted the eye away from the beauty of the lace and was
completely unnecessary. On my way out I bought a commemorative bobbin
and a catalogue, the catalogue I am willing to put up for raffle for
those who were not lucky enough to be able to go to see the real thing,
I will get my grandson to draw out the winner on the 20th September that
should give those who only get the digest enough time to enter. My
email is: [EMAIL PROTECTED] good luck.

Thanks for the list of winners. I am looking forward to going to the
exhibition early September with the Norfolk Lacemakers, a few of our
members have a side shoot to the Norfolk Lacemakers called Bishy Barnaby
who have won an award of excellance for their entry we saw pictures of
it at the last meeting and I was well impressed congratulations well and
truly earned. (in case anybody is wondering Bishy Barnaby is a Norfolk

2007-07-24 Thread Jean Leader
We're now back from holiday and have posted the list of Award and
Medal winners for the Seven competition on the Lace Guild website
(URL in the signature). We'll be adding a gallery of pictures in the
next week or so.

You'll also find details of the Exhibition catalogue which has a
complete list of everyone who entered, the title of each piece and a
brief description of how it relates to the theme of 'Seven'. It also
includes 20 coloured illustrations of a selection of entries.

[lace] seven times seven

2004-06-08 Thread Helene Gannac
We could take that one step further and do a book with seven fairy tales
or nursery rhymes containing seven things. I'm asure we can find them if
we try.
I can think of Snow White and her seven dwarves, The little tailor and his
seven giants, Puss in boots (the boots go 7 leagues at a time), the girl
and her seven swans(can't remember her name, she has to knit 7 nettle
jumpers to free her 7 brothers from the spell), Tom Thumb (I'm sure he's
got seven brothers)...
Tha would be enough project for all the lacemakers in the world, I think
:-))

Helene, the mad froggy from Melbourne

Now *that's* a project big enough for arachne! Seven people make
 wives,
forty-nine beginners make sacks (each in a different color and/or
 ground
stitch), 343 people make cats, 2,401 people make kittens. B-D

Yes, but the cats and the kittens are in the sacks. And I'm sure you
wouldn't see all the 49 sacks at one time - if I were carrying 7 sacks
some of them would be hidden behind my body and behind the other sacks.
But I also can't imagine that all the sacks would stay closed with so
many irritated kitties inside, so I think you'd see:

1 man
7 wives,
a number of sacks appearing from behind the wive's backs or lying on
the roadside where somebody dropped one and hasn't noticed yet
a few cats and kittens who have managed to make their escape, running
every which way ...

That makes a great subject for a group project because the number of
objects isn't pre-determined: dedicated trustworthy volunteers would
make the man (who I bet is carrying *nothing*) and his rather harried 7
wives, lots of people could make sacks and you could have a few
cat-makers, but if any of the sacks or cats didn't get made you
wouldn't have a problem.

[lace] Seven

2004-06-05 Thread Clay Blackwell
A week ago, I promised to compile a report on the interest expressed in the
Arachne project, tentatively being called Seven. As a matter of fact, the
ideas flew fast and furiously, and most people address the list directly,
while a few wrote to me privately. I set up a separate file in my system to
save the messages, and as of today, I have received 140 - oops, make that
141, because I've just gotten another one from Aurelia Loveman.

As most of the messages have been directed to the list, I see no point in
going over all of them. But the fact is that there is tremendous interest
in doing this project, and loads of talented people out there who want to be
involved.

I suppose that part of my laziness today has to do with the fact that I'm
under the weather with a grubby flu-like virus. Isn't it nice that THIS
kind of virus can't be transmitted via the internet!!

What a glorious, chaotic mess that would be! Some wives sprawled, the bags
tumbling and cats emerging, cats and kittens all around (maybe even a tail
or two just at the edge of the picture--as they escaped). Some cats licking
themselves, some running, some climbing the people, what a (visual)
cacaphony!

DOn't think it could ever fit into the allowed space, though. Unless you
stiffened them and stood them up. A pathway with all these (flat--let's not
even talk about making them 3-d) figures spread around it

It'd have to be *seven* panels. Let's see...one for the little tailor (with
a cat sniffing at the flyswatter); one for sins (with a wife contemplating
them?); one with a binary-7 (-111-111-111-) spiderweb (and a cat-paw
reaching towards it); one with seven 7s arranged radially (as a monogram on
a sack); one just a blank panel for the 7 secrets (and a couple of whiskers
sticking into it from one side); one a 7-sided pub with a wife entering (or
maybe the husband); and for 007, a golden gun, held by a wife.

(and one is one and all alone and ever more shall be so)

Hello Hélène,

It's not Dominique, it's Sof.

A bientôt

Sof

And sorry for speaking french and for people don't understand !!!

Make a lace picture of your town? Even though it has more than seven
buildings, the lace would be of 7 houses because that is the name of the
town.

[lace] Seven...

2004-06-01 Thread Jane Viking Swanson
Hi All, Don't forget the Seven Dwarfs! Personally, I'm thinking
about Tamara's seven mountains, etc. and Jo's village name.
Hmmm And I'm thinking about squares that fit together to
form the larger picture. Then some would be easier to make
to fill in the sky or the seven forests. But I think I'm going back
to dreaming, pattern drafting such a large project sounds like
a nightmare!

and now we're back to cloudy.

Ooh! I like that one - lots of floaty veils to construct and a rich, vivid
coloured setting to set the dancer in
