Super duper lace Alix! I neglected to compliment you earlier. Snocksnarls will be my new word of the day! What a great term to share with textile friends. I have already shared the Butterfly Project info with embroidery quilt guild friends. You can never have too many butterflies! Thanks for posting the link. The dollhouse size lace tablecloth is charming. Thanks for posting the pattern Avital. If one doesn't have a dollhouse, it could be applied to a small hard-shell/envelope type handbag--sort of a lacy minaudiere. A friend has golden retrievers they shed, shed, shed. She brushes them outside leaves the fur to be picked up by birds visiting her smorgasbord/feeder. I'm so glad to see so many fun ideas for orts! As a newbie, I tend to overwind my bobbins so I don't run out of thread but I can't stand wasting the stuff either. I haven't tried the layers of organza with machine embroidery but I have used the pastic stuff that comes on a roll that washes out later. Would you believe, it's called Free Lace!?! It's made by Mokuba if anyone wants the details, you may email me privately for a source. I made several scarves a hat band--tres chic. Last but not least--I think we have the makings of a new board game for lacemakers--CLEW! The first crime would be Penelope murdering B(l)inche in the drawing room. Hello All! Thank you for posting the Beeton's link. Ahh--but did you notice at the bottom of the article--Paternoster Row?? Any relation?? As to The Lacemaker in Cortland, OH--yes the shop is very much alive well. Tracy has been out of the office teaching vending at various lace days SCA events across the US but will re-open the store front on Aug 11th. Always check her website as she posts her schedule there. BTW, several events are planned for this fall at the shop including a needlelace work group, labyrinth class, Death Lace Race Project Hedgehog (apologies to Heidi Klum) a kumihimo workshop is on the radar for spring. She has expanded her shop so there is a huge classroom where lacey folks can gather. Sincerely, Susan in Erie, PA where it's only 1.5 hours to laceland (Cortland). - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] misc and Beeton's book of Needlework
Not many people realize that the patterns in Beeton's Book of Needlework are the same as in Madame Goubaud's books published about the same time. People often quote Mrs. Beeton's tatting methods but Isabella had been dead for several years by the time Beeton's Book of Needlework came out. Madame Goubaud may have been the editor rather than the author of the wide range of needlework books reprinted in the Beeton's book. Mme Goubaud already had a large workload as she and her husband produced the prestigious French fashion magazine Le Moniteur de la Mode in Paris. The Beetons and Goubauds were friends and business associates. Samuel Beeton told us in the preface to Beeton's Book of Needlework that the 'best attainable workers' had carried out his late wife's wish to have a needlework book along the same lines as her classic one on household management (Isabella had died five years before). He also wrote that point lace had recently become popular and the patterns in the book would help ladies to reproduce antique laces. I quote from my book Mlle Riego and Irish crochet lace which, along with Early History of Irish crochet lace, has a deal of general needlework and social history as well as of crochet lace. Hello All! Re: the bone item on ebay--is it a needle case? Since the ends unscrew, perhaps it is hollow? I have a tiny vintage bone needle case, carved etc that swings from a miniature handle (like a little bucket except it's a carved tube) so this sort of thing exists in small scale for that purpose. Re: oya on etsy--many thanks for posting. I have seen similar stuff in the keys (Fla), sold to drift about one's neck while wearing a floaty linen outfit. Re: summer school--it's almost here! While searching about for a few words to say in Welsh, I found a link to some photochrom stuff from the Library of Congress posted on Flickr. I ended up downloading some views of Snowdonia national park, Llandudno lighthouse Happy Valley, circa 1890-1900. Charming I'm looking forward to making a comparison with 2009 views! Also, according to The English Garden, Bodnant Gardens near Llandudno is celebrating their Diamond Jubilee this year so I hope one of the optional visit s on Tues or Thurs includes this very lovely venue. Hello All! Snow--After last night's snow, we are now at 145 on the season, the 2nd snowiest in Erie, PA history. Using bobbins with Pewter--Is anyone concerned about the lead content potential contamination? Just think of how we work. Hands to bobbins, hands to push up glasses that have slipped, hands to scratch your nose, hands to grab a piece of chocolate. Just asking?? Lace Fence--Thank you so much for posting the links. WOW. Beautiful, functional, not your grandma's chain link fence. Hello All! Before asking for help, I will just say that Cattern Cakes are delightful The Enclave celebrates every year in Cortland, OH. We also celebrate as many other occasions as possible because we are party animal lacemakers!! G I finally clipped the threads on my 's Gravenmoer piece would like to share a photo--but of course I am technologically challenged! At some point, the Mirecourt piece from last weekend will be off the pillow I'm expecting a semi-successful finish for it as well. Will someone send instructions privately or post .jpg photos for me? The Mirecourt teacher was Deborah Beever she was fun informative. She brought vintage examples shared a pile of patterns, including a wonderful fan that looks like it will fit a set of old ivory sticks that I found at an antique shop. I'm in love. . . Hello All! I survived the EGA seminar/50th year celebration lived to tell the tale!! If you are in/near Louisville, KY--do stop by the EGA headquarters on Jefferson St. The 19th annual exhibit is on there is a nice piece of contemporary needlelace on a metal armature near the front. Thanks Jeri, Chris Berry was charming witty--I thoroughly enjoyed her Tudor embroidery class. She will be teaching at the next seminar to be held in Pittsburgh next year. The 4-day class will cover the same time period, with each day devoted to a different technique: blackwork, pulled thread, colored silk metal thread. BTW--She also introduced some interesting hand-dyed thread by Stef Francis. Has anyone used this stuff for lace are you happy with the results?? I also met some lovely gals from the Umbria region of Italy who were demonstrating various embroidery techniques selling majolica bobbins from Deruta. There will be some sort of lace/embroidery fair in Parma in May. In catching up on a week's worth of postings--Finca thread is available in the US at The Lacemaker, Cortland, OH. More thanks to Jeri--I always worked x-stitch over 1 to get that petit point look because I can't stand that bunched up look you get over 2. (Did I mention that I'm not fond of x-stitch!?!) Well duh--that's why--but hey--who's got time to fiddle with a laying tool for such a soporific technique? As to mixing threads, anyone who has stitched with/cussed at Kreinik blending filament will agree--BUT--sometimes I've gotten some lovely shading by mixing threads in the needle. I've only tried this with cotton have not yet done this with lace--but I do wonder whether 2 low-twist threads could be twisted together, a la the Japanese method of twisting flat silk?? They also twist high-twist silks together at the JEC but the result is quite squirrelly intended for couching. I gave a spool of high-twist to a friend who used it for gimp she's still speaking to me so I assume it was do-able! To Dee: have you tried yarn bobs? They are these cute little plastic thingies that look like half of a bagel. The rounded side flips up to install the ribbon, perle, floss, whatever on an inner spool, then snaps back down to cover the strands keep them clean. The flipped down flap holds the ribbon in place, but ribbon may be pulled out with a slight tug. I use them for Japanese braiding on a kumihimo disk, storing all sorts of specialty threads etc. They also snap together so you can stack 'em. Cheap, easy available from The Lacemaker in Cortland, OH, USA. To Clay: Thanks for the clarification on rose ground vs virgin ground. I guess that's why I use color coding rather than descriptions as your tomayto is my tomahto. Well, it's off to Louisville, KY for classes in Tudor embroidery rozashi at EGA seminar. I hope to make some silver gold lace to finish the sweet bag as I believe it will bring out the spangles purl. The teacher is from Glasgow thanks to her nice bibliography, I've already steeped myself in all things Elizabethan. Have a fun week!
