[lace-chat] Fireworks

2003-11-01 Thread Jean Nathan
Fireworks are on sale to the public two weeks before 5th November (Guy
Fawkes Night) and two weeks before New Year's Eve. Fireworks on New Year's
Eve have only been happening since the millennium. Organised displays can
take place at any time of year - in Poole it's every Thursday evening on the
quay or the beach throughout the summer for the tourists, plus anything
other excuse they can think of.

In recent years the big display fireworks have been on sale to the public
for 5th November and New Year, and air bombs (extremely loud) in particular
are what the morons are buying and letting off at any time of the night in
any place they choose. There's no legislation to stop them so for the last
week and a bit my dog has been quivering, and our sleep has been interrupted
several times during the night almost every night.

My older brother was a high-up civil servant, and had a brief to cut down on
injuries from fireworks. The Firework Code that's posted in shops was
written by him. He was asked to draft a bill for parliament to help cut down
on injuries, but of all his suggestions, he was told that the only one that
stood any chance of being passed was the weakest - that organisers of
firework displays should be trained to use them safely by the suppliers of
the fireworks. Anything that restricted the use or sale wouldn't stand a
chance. When a bill goes before parliament it's debated and there's a set
time for the debate. If an MP chooses to talk for the whole of the time
allocated for the debate and there isn't time for a vote, then the bill goes
in the trash can. This is what happened - at least one MP had been lobbied
by the firework importers (firewors aren't made in the UK) to talk the bill
out because it would cost them money to train people and therefore cut down
their profits.

The problem of fireworks has become such that there is a bill coming soon,
but how strong it will be, we don't know yet. There are already rules
governing the storage of fireworks, but a few weeks ago three and a half
tons of them, which are of course just explosives, were found in a lock-up
garage in Bournemouth. The Thursday night display in Poole uses just less
than one ton each week. So far the owner hasn't been traced.

Why would you be driving on the pavement? We drive on the road and walk on

My good old dictionary says: Pavement -- a hard, paved surface, especially
of a public area or thoroughfare. Then it goes on to add -- Chiefly
British -- a sidewalk.

Thus, in my part of the USA, pavement usually refers to the road, but it
can be the sidewalk also in some cases. Pavement is not restricted to
foot traffic or wheeled traffic. It's a hard surface as opposed to dirt
or gravel roads or paths.

Around here, the public has fireworks usually on July 4th (Independence Day).
A few people set off some during the week before or after, but not many.
However, I might note that in my state the available types of fireworks
are very restricted. The safety laws are very strict. Some people illegally
cross the state line and buy in the next state that does not have the safety
laws. They'll bring the nonapproved fireworks back and hope that they don't
get caught with them.

Special public displays can be found through the year connected to special
events. A local rodeo sets off fireworks each night at the end of
performances
during the week or two of the event. Big cities have New Year's displays.

Re: [lace-chat] Henry VIII's wives

2003-11-01 Thread Carol Adkinson
Hi Rock Band,

Actually, Henry and all his wives except Catherine Parr - the last one -
were buried according to the rites of the Roman Catholic church - as
although Henry didn't want the ultimate authority in England to be the Pope,
he still regarded himself - and lived - as Roman Catholic. Of course,
people can, and still do, temper their faith to thier own
proclivities...

Just one of those strange facts which surfaces every now and again!

[lace-chat] fireworks

2003-11-01 Thread Jean Peach
Our fireworks seem to start at Michaelmas, when we
have a Michaelmas fair, on the Friday there is
a fireworks display, from then on we have had fireworks
every day going off at 3 pm or even 1.30 am. We were
shown on the news one city where over 20 phone booths have
been blown up by fireworks, the same amount of cars too.
Fireworks are being brought into the country and no one
seems to know where they are going once they arrive.
Even nails are now being inserted into fireworks.

We have our Guy Fawkes display at the local racecourse,
we pay I think 4 pounds each to go and see the display,
there is usually a bonfire with an effigy of Guy Fawkes
being burnt.

There was a discussion on the TV about the new legislation
that will be in place they hope before next bonfire night,
every one who was discussing the new legislation said it
did not go far enough. I don't know whether this legislation
is for the UK or England. Here in England all legislation has
to be past at Westminster, whereas Wales and Scotland can
also pass laws for their countries in their parliaments.

Re: [lace-chat] Fwd: Cruise control

2003-11-01 Thread Martha Krieg
This one is NOT a hoax. One of my close friends was driving on the
ice in Michigan around New Year's day, and the same thing happened to
her. Her minivan went into the median and rolled. She was uninjured
because she had her seatbelt on, but the car was a total loss. The
police told her the same thing. How come no one publicizes this???

From: Clay Blackwell [EMAIL PROTECTED]
A 36 year old female had an accident several weeks ago and
totaled her car. A resident of Kilgore,Texas, she was traveling
between Gladewater Kilgore. It was raining, though not
excessively, when her car suddenly began to hydroplane and literally
flew through the air.

She was not seriously injured but very stunned at the sudden occurrence!

When she explained to the highway patrolman what had happened
he told her something that every driver should know -NEVER DRIVE IN
THE RAIN WITH YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON. She had thought she was being
cautious by setting the cruise control and maintaining a
safe consistent speed in the rain. But the highway patrolman told
her that if the cruise control is on and your car begins to
hydroplaned - when your tires loose contact with the pavement your
car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed and you take off like
an airplane... She told the patrolman that was exactly what had
occurred.

We all know you have little or no control over a car when it begins
to hydroplane. You are at the mercy of the Good Lord. The
highway patrol estimated her car was actually traveling through
the air at 10 to 15 miles per hour faster than the speed set on
the cruise control.

The patrolman said this warning should be listed, on the
drivers seat sun-visor - NEVER USE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE
PAVEMENT IS WET OR ICY along with the airbag warning.

We tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a
safe speed but we don't tell them to use the cruise control only
when the pavement is dry. The only person the accident victim
found, who knew this (besides the patrolman), was a man who had had
a similiar accident, totaled his car and sustained severe injuries.

If you send this to 15 people and only one of them doesn't
know about this, then it was all worth it. You might have saved a
life.
