Tamara.I was going to send you a message anyway
about postage. The Royal Mail is proposing changing its way of charging for post,
moving from charging by weight only to charging by size *and* weight. This
has horrified mail order firms with at least one, a film developing service,
reckoning it will go out of business as thits strenght is cheap processing witn
minimum postal costs. I imagine this will also affect magazine subscriptions.

years ago and gave up, in disgust, after 3 days, but have been told
it's improved now. Hah! Came back home to 6 messages -- 3 in the
private box (one telling me that I now have the new added service.
Service!) and 3 on lace. Nothing at all on chat.

Yet Alice tells me (one of the 3 message in the private box) there's
been a flood of messages on lace...

So, I think, OK, Positini is holding them all, thinking they're either
spam or virus or something. I go to Postini -- your box is empty it
says... No messages in my account -- none in Postini's holding pen,
none on my account at the ISP, none (beyond those 6, all sent out
before noon) on my puter... it's so frustrating, I could *spit*. Bad
enough that I don't get to see my own mesages on the list; now I don't
get to see anyone else's... I just hope I hadn't got unsubscribed as
well, for some reason, and this message reaches y'all...

So, please, please send something; for once, I won't mind there being
too many :)

Don't know if the ISPs are being extra cautious because of this latest
virus. A few weeks ago Freeserve (now Wanadoo) was slow due to extra
vigilant filtering in their system. The current Sasser virus isn't spread by
email, but through the internet.

Here, the Maritime and Coastguard agency computer system is down due to this
virus and they're having to take emergency calls with pen and paper rather
than rely on their electronic mapping and charting system. They say they're
still operational, but, as someone who doesn't like the sea at the best of
times, I wouldn't like to go out into the English channel which is like a
motorway (freeway) in the rush hour with boats and ships of all sizes
passing through, but also with others, particularly small craft and car
ferries betweeen England and the continent crossing them.

But... If my ISP is having problems, how come *my* messages go through
OK?

Actually, for those who know anything about email systems, not at all
curious and entirely to be expected. From an ISP's point of view, outbound
and inbound email have little in common. They have different storage
requirements, often use different technologies and many users connect to
outbound mail less often and for a shorter time. So it makes good sense to
keep the two systems separate, on different machines. This has the added
advantage that for users a problem will usually only impact either inbound
or outbound mail. Would you really rather they were handled together so
that a problem with mail in one direction impacts the other?

Larry is a recently divorced guy who was left with his ex's wedding dress
instead of the ring. Instead of throwing it away, he decided to sell it on
eBay. Since it was backless and sleeveless, it would not display on a
hanger and he had no person to model it, so he modeled it himself -- with
his face blanked out. He put an explanation 10 yards long on it -- and
kept updating it as the days went by. He claims to have received 5
marriage proposals among all the responses.

It was worth a laugh to read his story -- maybe he should be a
writer. Anyway, the whole thing attracted so much attention that he was
invited to appear on talk shows, and was even part of our local TV news.

You can see the pictures and read the commentary from the eBay auction on
his web site. http://www.weddingdressguy.com/aboutme.html

His auction received over 1 million 'hits', and I just noticed that his
website has had over 28,000 hits right now. He's become famous over
this. And the dress sold for about 3 times it's original price.

If you want a laugh, look up the stie and have a read.

[lace-chat] St. George's Day

2004-05-04 Thread Janice Blair
I always wondered why it was not celebrated when I lived in England apart from the odd
person wearing a rose in their lapel. My children started their education in Wales
where my daughter had to wear Welsh costume, my son could wear any costume and often
went as a cowboy, at school on St. Davids day. He wore a leek as a boutonniere. They
also only went for school in the morning, wonder if that is still the practice.
Living over here I tend to forget about St. George's day but you can bet if I had the
appropriate flag I would fly it. I often fly the union jack when my British club is
meeting at my home.

No ma'm; that I would not. Had slow outgoing mail the night before
though -- about the same the problem started (according to Alice) -- so
I guess the separation isn't as watertight as all that. At least at out
little, local, ISP...

Anyway, the woes are over, it seems :) Thanks very much to everyone who
wrote to me last night -- I got all those messages today. Messages
started coming in late last night, as a matter of fact, but only the
current ones; the backlogged ones came later.

Particular thanks to Heather (Mouth) who both forwarded a bunch of lace
and lace-chat messages (some of which reached me today both as a
forward and as messages directly from the lists) *and* telephoned --
all the way from Brit. Columbia -- this morning... You ladies are *the
greatest* friends anyone could wish for.

And the 50-50, up-and-down aspect of living in a small town and having
a small, local, ISP... They close at 19:00 (and all day Sat and Sun) --
parochial hours, which is a downside. But they called this morning,
bright and early (curse 'em g) to thank me for calling and alerting
them to the problem (I left a message on their voice mail. I *hate*
voice mail), and to tell me that we were now back in business; they
checked my box, and it was filling up nicely... :) Sorry for the
inconvenience, hope it wasn't too bad, do I want a discount for the
lost day? Which I didn't, not having incurred any financial losses over
the problem and seeing as it wasn't their fault.

just as Orwell said :)

From: M.A.
I was due later in the week for an appointment with the gynaecologist.
Early
one morning, I received a call from the doctor's office to tell me that
I
had been rescheduled for that morning at 9:30am. I had only just packed
everyone off to work and school and it was already around 8:45 am.

The trip to his office took about 35 minutes, so I didn't have any time
to
spare. As most women do, I like to take a little extra effort over
hygiene
when making such visits, but this time I wasn't going to be able to
make the
full effort.

So I rushed upstairs, threw off my pyjamas, wet the washcloth that was
sitting next to the sink, and gave myself a quick wash in that area to
make sure I was at least presentable. I threw the washcloth in the
clothes
basket, donned some clothes, hopped in the car and raced to my
appointment.

I was in the waiting room for only a few minutes when I was called in.
Knowing the procedure, as I'm sure you do, I hopped up on the table,
looked
over at the other side of the room and pretended that I was in Paris or
some
other place a million miles away.

I was a little surprised when the doctor said, My, we have made an
extra
effort this morning, haven't we? I didn't respond.

After the appointment, I heaved a sigh of relief and went home.
The rest of the day was normal ... some shopping, cleaning, cooking,
etc.

After school, when my six year old daughter was playing, she called out
from
the bathroom, Mommy, where's my washcloth?

I told her to get another one from the cupboard. She replied, No, I
need
the one that was here by the sink. It had all my glitter and sparkles
in
it.
