[lace-chat] Anatomy Comparisons

Subject: Comparisons
A family is sitting around the supper table. The son asks his father,
"Dad, how many kinds of breasts are there?"
The father, surprised, answers, "Well, son, there are three kinds of
breasts. In her twenties, a woman's breasts are like melons, round
and firm. In her thirties to forties, they are like pears, still nice but
hanging a bit. After fifty, they are like onions."
"Onions?"
"Yes, see them and they make you cry."
This infuriated the wife and daughter.
So the daughter said, "Mum, how many kind of penises are there?"
The mother, surprised, smiles, and looks at her husband and answers,
"Well, dear, a man goes through three phases. In a man's twenties, his
penis is like an oak, mighty and hard. In his thirties and forties, it is like
a birch, flexible but reliable. After fifty, it is like a Christmas tree."
"A Christmas tree?"
"Yes, dead from the root up & the balls are there for decoration only."

[lace-chat] OT music and universities

My DD1 has the opportunity to study overseas next year. I know there are a
few musos on lace chat and I was wondering if they could give me some advice
about university music programs in the US or Canada that I could pass along

work while she is studying?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Cheers, Yvonne.

Mmmm, it doesn't sound much like Idrija lace...I'll keep it in mind, but
the bobbins are all of half a centimetre long, so I don't think I'd be

2004-10-25 Thread Lynne Cumming
In Letchworth Garden City (the World's First garden City!) we have black
squirrels. At the TIC where I work we sell lots of postcards that get sent
off to doubters as evidence they exist. We have leaflets on them and a nice
little side line in souvenirs portraying one. Sometimes people come just to
see them and then we are exoected to be able to produce live ones for
viewing! I live a few miles away and have seen them here too - I followed
one down the path last week. Folk in Letchworth either love 'em or hate 'em
depanding on the size of their gardens and the damage done. Personally I
like them - they are slightly smaller than the greys and very definitely
black.

RE: [lace-chat] Black Squirrels

2004-10-25 Thread Carolyn Hastings
Here in the Boston area we have red, grey, and quite a few black
squirrels. The black ones are new in the last ten years or so. I've
heard that they are a mutation of the grey squirrels, other than color,
no difference.

The red squirells were also "new" in the sense that they grey squirrels
had driven them out years ago, or so I was told, but have somehow made a
come back. I had been told that the grey squirrels are much more
aggressive than the red ones, but people who have red squirrels in
abundance say the opposite. The red squirrels are definitely smaller
than the grey squirrels, at least around here.

They seem to go a little "crazy" in the fall, and so do the chipmunks --
always dashing from nowhere in front of cars, or stopping for a bite to
eat in the middle of the road and not moving for *anything* -- it's a
wonder any of these species survive!

Regards,
Carolyn

PS so much of what I wrote above is "I've been told ..." so I did a
little looking it up -- apparently the "Black squirrels are a variety of
the eastern grey squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis And one town, Council
Bluffs, IA claims to have had black squirrels since the 1840's (so much
for appearing in the last ten years ...). For those of you who are
interested, there are also White Squirrels -- the photo of the little
rodent is very cute -- but I haven't time to get into that!

Re: [lace-chat] Re: Black Squirrels

2004-10-25 Thread Bev Walker
Hi everyone, and Sue who asked - In my neck of the woods (western
Vancouver Island) we have the native red squirrels scampering about - only
this year have any of the large greys made an appearance, but I knew they
were working their way westward - noticeable by the incidents of road kill
we would see on our way to 'town' (= city of Victoria, some 30 miles
easterly). I have only seen black squirrels in the area of Beacon Hill
Park, a garry oak environment in Victoria. If you have seen 'Ice Age'
there is a squirrel character that shoves an acorn into places - I watched
a black 'in action' at the park one day - creepy how their little paws and
'arms' can work an acorn into the ground...so the animation in 'Ice Age'
was right on. I haven't seen grey squirrels with acorns though - most
always I see them running along a wire or tree trunk. They are invasive
and I don't know that they bother with the reds directly, but I know they
compete agressively for the food - however, in a turnabout, the grey
that came to live in my yard was soon dispensed with by the cat...the grey
was after the cat food, a delectable that is not at all to the taste of
the red squirrels, and the cat simply waited for its chance to nab
(watching 'squirrelvision' - perfect!).

Haven't seen a grey squirrel in the neighbourhood since, but the reds are
still resident, in the coniferous forest - no acorns, so probably no
black squirrels either?

[lace-chat] Squirrels

2004-10-25 Thread Jean Nathan
Not aware of black squirrels in the UK, but they could be in places other
than the south where I live. The only squirrels in parks, gardens and
woodlands are grey ones. We do have red squirrels, but they're on an island
in Poole Bay, and grey squirrels won't get there to wipe them out unless
they can swim well. Think there might be a few pockets of red squirrels
elsewhere.

Red squirrels are protected, but I understand that the grey ones are
regarded as vermin, and if you catch one you can't release it again. You
either have to kill it yourself or get someone in to do it. We feed the
birds (I mean we buy bird seed by the sackful), so get squirrels as well. We
like seeing them in the garden, so we wouldn't even try to catch one.

As a result of bird seed not all getting eaten, we had a cannabis plant grow
under one of the seed feeders this summer. That's only the third one in 12
years. The first two grew side-by-side under a seed feeder when we lived in
Somerset. I had no idea what they were, put them in flower pots and took
them into the school I taught at to see if anyone knew. Several did. We
considered growing them on, drying the leaves and baking a cake to share
round the staffroom to liven up some of the staid teachers. Could have been
quite amusing. But as just having the plants in school was a dismissable
offence, we destroyed them.

[lace-chat] Lace Problem

2004-10-25 Thread Evelynn McCain
Hi,

I am new to chatting so forgive me if I am not doing it right. I am a
self-taught lacemaker. I have been making lace (off and on) for about 10
years. I am trying to make a piece of lace from 100 Traditional BOBBIN LACE
PATTERNS BY Geraldine Stott and Bridget Cook. I tried to order the correct
threads (DMC Retors d'Alsace No. 60 and Coats cotton a broder, No. 18) from
the Lacemaker in Ohio. I was told they are not available and that Egyptian
Cotton 60/2 and Pearl cotton 8 would work. I ordered them and began working
the Bride on page 37.I am disappointed that cotton is not as crisp as
linen even though I expected it. The obvious solution would be to use linen
thread, but I want bright white for a bridal handkerchief. I am more
concerned that the lace doesn't look like it would hold together well. Have
any of you made lace using the patterns in this book? What thread did you
use? Does anyone know of a source for Retors d'Alsace? Thank you so much
for your help.

We have had black squirrels on the southern part of our street for a number of years.
Recently I noticed that they have made it up to our end of the street, probably 1/2
mile as I see them running around our back yard. I have not started feeding the birds
yet and the only squirrels that have come up on the deck so far are the greyish ones.
Did see a red fox at the southern end of the street the other day. When I came to the
states 22 years ago I was told there were no foxes. That was in Pennsylvania. I have
seen quite a number in this area of Illinois, must be why the local river is the Fox
River. :-)

Re: [lace-chat] Black squirrels

2004-10-25 Thread Ruth Budge
Noelene, during one of those mice plagues, we stayed in a motel in Bathurst
(for the non- Australians, Bathurst is a quite large city a couple of hours
drive west of Sydney). All evening our eldest son, then aged about 15, kept
driving us mad by saying "there's a mouse.there's a mouse". I put it down
to his trying to scare his younger siblings. However, after we put them to
bed in the other room, we settled down with a quiet cuppa - and lo and behold,
there *was* a mouse!

So this picture of righteous indignation, complete with *beautiful* English
accent, marched down to the owner of the motel to complain. He provided me
with a mouse-trap and cheese, which didn't really placate meI was horrified
to find a mouse in a top-class motel.

I'll cut the long story short - suffice to say I didn't sleep at all during the
night - we caught three mice, and heard many others scratching around inside
the wall cavities in both our rooms, and I've absolutely refused to stay in
that motel ever since!

Needless to say, the manager blamed it all on the mouse plague, but our friends
who live in Bathurst (and who live on a 5 acre block on the outskirts of town,)
were adamant that *they* hadn't had trouble with mice coming in from the
fields, so didn't understand why the motel in the centre of town should claim
to do so!!

2004-10-25 Thread Lynn Carpenter
In Michigan, we have three common species of squirrel:

The Eastern fox squirrel, Sciurus niger, a small red squirrel.
The red squirrel, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus
And the Eastern gray squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis.
http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/information/Sciurus_caro
linensis.html

(Sorry, the link above will probably break, but it's a good one.)

Black squirrels (well, at least in Michigan, I'm not going to vouch for
anywhere else!) are a melanistic form of the gray squirrel. Here on the
Lake Michigan coast they are pretty common. It is kind of strange to see
them running on the grass out of the corner of your eye -- like seeing a
cat that turns out to be a squirrel.

I could go on about ground squirrels and flying squirrels, but I can't type
that word any more. It's starting to look too weird. If I type it again,
I won't be able to spell it at all any more!

I don't know what sort of hunter Al would make. Having paid a young fortune
to rid him of parasites, we don't let him out.

He doesn't accept that situation. I was carrying in the first load of
groceries today, Al has long since figured out that humans with hands full
can't grab cats, he darted out, went to ground under the car before I could
disencumber myself -- we very nearly didn't get the meat in the fridge
because it wasn't with the other stuff -- and while I was trying to figure
out how to look under the car without getting my good pants dirty, he
sneaked out and around the corner; by the time I established that he wasn't
under the car, I had no idea which way he'd gone.

Unfortunately for the prison break, there was another human wandering
around. DH ratted on him, I picked him up & locked him in the bedroom until
we got the rest of the stuff inside.

On the other hand, today DH installed three carpeted shelves in the living
room & Al figured out what they were for right off the bat. Later in the
afternoon, he took a nap on the top shelf. Then scared us by chasing his tail.
