[lace-chat] The Little Paper Bag

2005-03-09 Thread Malvary J Cole
A little paper bag was feeling unwell, so he took himself off to the
doctor's.

"Doctor, I don't feel too good," said the little paper bag.
"Hmm, you look OK to me," said the Doctor, "but I'll do a blood test and see
what that shows, come back and see me in a couple of days."

The little paper bag felt no better when he got back for the results.
"What's wrong with me?" asked the little paper bag.
"I'm afraid you are HIV positive!" said the doctor.
"No, I can't be - I'm just a little paper bag!" said the little paper bag.
"Have you been having unprotected sex?" asked the doctor.
"NO, I can't do things like that - I'm just a little paper bag!"
"Well have you been sharing needles with other intravenous drug users?"
asked the doctor.

"NO, I can't do things like that - I'm just a little paper bag!"
"Perhaps you've been abroad recently and required a jab or a blood
transfusion?" queried the doctor.

"NO, I don't have a passport - I'm just a little paper bag!"
"Well", said the doctor, "are you in a homosexual relationship?"
"NO! I told you I can't do things like that, I'm just a little paper bag!"
"Then there can be only one explanation." said the doctor

I don't know why, but this ("Why: because that's what Shakespeare wrote.")
made me laugh.

And now I'm wondering if the reason "SCAdians" (members of the Society for
Creative Anachronism) say "Lay on!" (for "Start fighting") and "Hold!"
("Stop fighting") is taken directly from

"Lay on, Macduff,
And damn'd be him that first cries, “Hold, enough!” "
Macbeth. Act v. Sc. 8. Note 1

Or if you have Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, it's #1470.

[lace-chat] Secret Pal Thanks

2005-03-09 Thread Carol Adkinson
Well - a huge thank-you to my wonderful Secret Pal. The parcel came this
morning - and it certainly brightened up a very grey day weatherwise!

The kangaroo is lovely - but I really don't think I could stick pins into his
tummy! I am the person who, when she washed the children's soft toys, made a
sort of harness of old tights/stockings, so that I didn't have to peg them by
their ears onto the washing line. So - he will sit happily on the pillow,
and will point out the errors, so he will be quite a hard-worked little chap.

The thread is lovely - a freind of mine is *very* adventurous with colour, and
is gradually training me too, so it will be very useful indeed, and I am
already wondering what to make with it. The cover cloth is super - so large,
and a wonderful motif on it. I shall take it to Lace Days, and really
show-off with it - not many people will have one with the Tasmanian Branch of
the Australian Lace Guild motif on it!

The little address book is so handy - small enough to pop into a handbag, so I
will always have my important addresses, phone numbers and eMail addresses to
hand! I am not working much at the moment, but it will be much used when I
restart my temping jobs.

The Survival Kit - well - I did chuckle! *All* the contents are very
necessary for anyone's well-being, so it is useful as well as decorative.
Thanks also for the note - the cards you use are lovely - another product of
the ALG!I do hope you enjoyed Melbourne, and that lots of lace was made
between the gossips! I shall think of you at the Royal Easter Show, and
visiting your Dad - my Dad's birthday is on the 21st March, so they are very
close birthdays. My parents are both in their eighties now, and keep very
well but as you say, not getting any younger - and I would hate to have
regrets that we didn't see them often enough!

Thanks once again - take care of yourself and Rod, and I shall look forward to
nmext month's news!

Thanks and Best Wishes,

Carol

[lace-chat] secret pal

2005-03-09 Thread Lynn Weasenforth
Hello to my secret pal,

Once again you have outdone yourself. The needlelace video, wow, I can't wait
to watch it and see what it is all about. Something new for me to
learn...gourmet jelly beans to die for. The coffee creamers, yum and I love
the smell of the potpouri. Finally the extra thing you sent for me, I know
that person will love...just like me.

Thank you again, you are to good to me.

Hugs, Lynn

[lace-chat] :) Fwd: An amusing slip-up

2005-03-09 Thread Tamara P. Duvall
To keep up my Polish in an all-English environment, I subscribe to an
e-mail newsletter, published by the Physics dept of the Polish Academy
of Science. Mostly, it gives (briefly; no in-depth articles) the news
of Poland (though with special interest in Warsaw) - political "scene",
corruption scandals and investigations/trials, a bit of sport, a bit of
weather, the current standing of the zloty vis dollar and euro; things
like that. But, once in a while, it'll also include an odd/funny bit.
Today's was:

An amusing slip-up
Of a serious Israeli daily "Jerusalem Post". The interview with the
president of Warsaw, Lech Kaczynski, was illustrated with the photo of
"Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski. After the intervention of the Polish
Embassy, the editorial staff apologised. Kaczynski (Lech) does not feel
offended; treats the matter as an absurd mistake
