[lace-chat] crochet hooks

2009-02-12 Thread Dora Northern
Just to show off.

I have a crochet hook on one end and the shape of a knitting needle on the
other..so when i get fed up with knitting I just use the hook. Quite fun and
more exciting..

Just thought you might be interested

Re: [lace-chat] CROCHET HOOKS

2009-02-12 Thread Brenda Paternoster

There used to be TWO sets of sizes for British crochet hooks.
The bigger ones for use with knitting yarns were the same as the old
British knitting needle sizes, The steel hooks for use with finer
crochet cottons had a different set of sizes although the two sets of
numbering did overlap a bit. see:

http://www.crochettreasures.com/conversion.htm

Also someone mentioned engineering wire gauges - the old British
knitting needle/crochet hooks are actually (imperial) Standard Wire
Gauge or SWG, whilst the old American sizes are American Wire Gauge or
AWG, aslo known as Brown & Sharp. They are both indirect sizes which
mean that the higher the number the finer the wire/needle/hook. See:

http://www.colomar.com/Shavano/conductor.html

I don't know what system the old British steel hooks followed.

Yes, they are! We even had for a while conversion gauges made of metal
or
plastic with graduated holes in them listing the US, CAN and MM sizes
on

them. CAN equaled BRITISH.

I have a few still, somewhere. If you would like one, let me know by
sending me your address.

Thank you all. Many of the conversion charts didn't have imperial only
metric But Sue and another lady, I think Jean found two that did. But I had
already gone out and bought 6 new ones :-( Still I was surprised how cheap
they
were. You are a great bunch of ladies. Nothing seems to much trouble for you
all. Best wishes, Vivienne

By Imperial, do you mean inches or wire gauge?  Either way, there is another
conversion table here

http://www.jewelrymaking-beads-library.com/wire-gauge.html

I can't remember how wire gauge is calculated, but it's something to do with
how long a length of wire can be made out of a certain weight of metal.
Personally, on the rare occasions I've tried to knit something and my mum
hasn't got any metric needles of the right size, I just ask my dad as he's an
engineering-y sort of person ;o)

Re: [lace-chat] help!

2009-02-12 Thread Brenda Paternoster
Whilst I agree with most of what Joy says, if the finished size really
matters you need to make a tension square, the same as you would for
knitting.

If you Google crochet hook conversion you'll find lots of charts
including

http://www.vintage-crafts-patterns-designs.com/crochet-hook.html
same if you want to find knitting needle conversion charts.

The patterns are all metric or USA.

My USA#8 crochet hook is 1.5mm metric -- but you don't
need no steenking conversion chart. Just try hooks on
your selected thread until you find one that the thread
just fills.

When you use an oversize hook to loosen your tension,
you don't need the same hook the designer used -- your
tension isn't his tension.

The only time you need to pay attention to the arbitrary
numbers on the hooks is when you switch from one hook to
another and want the two hooks to match.
