Dear Jane, I'm glad this was brought up. I've been wondering what happened to dove into the bushes and the glass vessel shone in the light. They seem to have disappeared in what I read in the US and are replaced with dived and shined. Now I understand better what is going on! Australia is just beginning to use dove (which I loathe) but shone always was and still is. We use shined in the sense that he shined up his war medals. [lace-chat] Cake recipe for Janice
Dear Janice, Does anyone have a recipe for a cake that will keep for over a week. This recipe came originally from arachne and I just love it. It becomes more moist as the days go by. Enjoy David in Ballarat Mystery Tomato Soup Cake Ingredients: 4oz butter 10oz flour (plain) 4oz walnuts 0.5 teaspoon cloves 2 level teaspoons baking powder 0.25 teaspoon nutmeg 6oz brown sugar 6oz raisins 0.25 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 level teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 1 tin HEINZ tomato soup (10.5 oz size ) Chop the walnuts. Cream the butter and sugar together, and add the bicarbonate of soda, and the soup gradually (It always look awful at the point but carry on ). Mix together the baking powder, flour, salt and spices and add to the butter etc stirring in lightly. Stir in the raisins and walnuts put the mixture into a greased 7 dish and bake in a slow oven (300f) for 1.75-2hrs Self raising flour can be used if you leave out the baking powder. Eat and enjoy it stays beautifully moist and seems to improve with keeping although it doesn't stay around long in this house. Throughout grades 2 and 3 there was a raging battle between the parents and the teachers to let us use the fountain pens (the kind where the ink supply was sucked from the inkwell into a rubber bulb; no cartridges). I seem to recall that in about 1958 when the Bic Biro made it's first appearance, they were banned as instruments of the devil. Not sure why really. Possibly because they were thought not to facilitate a beautiful copperplate hand. All that ink was so difficult to manage for the poor left handers, who were just then being permitted to use their favoured dominance. The first newsletters were typewritten on a special matrix and then run off on a machine where the ink oozed through the little holes made by the typepwriter! Re: [lace-chat] Snapshot of my life
Clay But the machine we printed our newsletters on was something more modern. It actually had black ink. The drum of the machine had a pad that was saturated (from within) with a thick ink. The stencil was clipped onto the machine and then the drum was rotated several times to prime it. After a couple of rotations, the backing paper was peeled off, and the printing began. It was possible to save a stencil by re-applying the backing to the stencil before removing it. That sure sounds like our Gestetner. Take a tall glass of tepid milk (Mum always insisted that it MUST be tepid - too hot or cold and the nutmeg won't work - i.e. body temperature) Stir in a teaspoon of sugar. Then take one LEVEL teaspoon of powdered or ground nutmeg and stir it in briskly. Then drink it down as you go to bed. Nutmeg does not dissolve well but enough gets in. It's really yummy Hope it helps David in Ballarat - wide awake at 0400hrs!!! To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat y...@address.here. Re: [lace-chat] Re: Risque Humour
Doubtless, after this bit of brilliant wit (not!), he spent the next two weeks on crutches, to learn the difference between crutch and crotch. That's debatable. Nowadays the word crotch seems to have virtually disappeared from Australian English.
