I remember watching these programs on the Crystal Caves months ago. Just
recently there was a follow-up documentary on a new cave just off this one
that was featured.
Nice to know that one of the scientists is a well known(in IOLI/Arachne
circles) lacemaker! Thanks, Janice, for sending the link and introducing
Penny to those of us who have not yet met her.

There are a few of the Victorian episodes as well.

Wish others would post more so that those of us that can't view BBC.com

somehow capture the video of the lacemaking episode and share it with the

[lace-chat] 16th century gift of the sable

2010-11-19 Thread Tatman
Hello fellow historians/lacemakers,

Since this doesn't have to do with lace, but more of historical measures, I
guess I post this on lace chat. I have a friend who is reading a book that
takes place in the 16th century. As she explains in her email to me below,
the man character is giving a sable as a gift to his lady which she adorns
on her gown. Is this sable the animal or some other accessory/item? From
what I have found so far on the net is that it was a treasure to receive a
sable and to display it on your gown as a status symbol. My friend's email
is below for you to read.

Your thoughts and explanation of the significance of this ritual would be
appreciated.

Thanks,

I want to thank those that gave me some insight into this tradition and my

research I found on Wiki and other sources, but wanted other's opinions.

For the one who asked what book my friend is reading, it is ³Boleyn

[lace-chat] Re: Love and marriage

2009-10-30 Thread Mark, aka Tatman
We both met in college and had dated for a while.  Funny story
here.  Each of us had mutual friends that we would hang out
with.  My wife's friend was her room mate in the dorms.  My
friend wasn't my room mate, but only just a few doors down.  We would
go on double dates often.  And sometimes we would be seen with each
other's mate instead of the one's we would be dating.  So college
student body would get confused as to who was dating who.  Then it
finally came up that my friend and Kim's friend announced they were
engaged.  Well that settled THAT rumor!

Now for the
proposal part.

Kim and I would hang out in the local
lounge at the college in the evenings sipping Mt. Dew, having bagels and
cream cheese and watch our favorite shows of Love Boat and Fantasy
Island.  YEAH!  It's the 80s!!!  "Gag me with a
spoon!" HAH.  Since the topic of our friend's engagement came
up, I asked Kim what she thought if we got married.  She
said.."so are you asking??"  I said yes, I am.
Not really romantic, but in a strange way and coincidence.

We
have been married for 22 years and plan on the rest of life :)

[lace-chat] Re: dom in paris & any other French chefs

2009-10-23 Thread Mark, aka Tatman
I have had authentic French cousine here in the states near our little
town.  The chef was trained in France for that purpose and set up her
restaurant in a town just down from where I live.  It was a big
to-do!  This was back in the 70s and 80s.  She since has moved
on and went back to France I believe.  But I do recall her French
onion soup and is as you describe, David.  I did find these links to
supposedly authentic French onion soup that might be similar and worth a
try.  The sound yummy and already I am drooling!!

Hi Simon! Welcome to this wonderful list of lacemakers, both female and
male. There are several of us male lacemakers lurking about in most
countries. Only a few pipe up with Q/A and chat. Your question about the
finishing of raw bobbins seems to be answered. I agree the oils on the
hands will give it a nice patina. But do sand any rough spots so it doesn't
snag the threads.
