[lace-chat] Bowes Museum & Harrogate Lace Event
Hi Later this month my DH and I shall be travelling north to visit both the Bowes Museum and also the Harrogate Lace Event, really looking forward to seeing the Blackbourne exhibition at the Bowes as I've heard so much about it. It will also be nice to attend a lace suppliers fair that we've not been to before. I do have a couple of questions, firstly will there be any other arachneans attending the Harrogate Lace Event on 24 March, it would be lovely to meet you if you are going and perhaps have a chat over coffee; and can anyone local to the area recommend a B&B in the Castle Barnard area rather than Harrogate, (I'm hoping to visit on both the Thursday & Friday - DH hasn't twigged that one yet!). Our last couple of forays using internet have turned up a couple of interesting one night only and never again B&B's, so I thought I'd try and get a couple of personal recommendations instead. Many thanks and hope to meet one or two of you at the Lace Event best wishes Nicky in Suffolk To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace-chat] Tatra mountains
Hi spiders, Another appeal for information, a student is going on holiday to the Tatra mountains region of Poland. Are there any museums or places to visit in the area that are lace related please. Many thanks to you all for the wealth of information that you are all so willing to share with the rest of us. [lace-chat] PA system / identifying old thread
Dear spiders I 'm looking into a portable PA system, intended for the use of speakers at lace days can anyone give me any pointers as to what to look for and any pitfalls to be aware of please, I know that some of you do give talks and use such equipment so any advice would be most welcome. My other qurey is this, I have discovered some fragile thread on some very old bobbins and would like to make a positive identification as to what fibre the thread is made from. In some instances it is only tiny samples, but it could prove crucial to some research I'm working on, I don't have access to a microscope and my magnifyier is clearly not good enough. Any suggestions please. May I also take this opportunity to wish you all the very best for the New Year. [lace-chat] a few howlers
Hi spiders The following howlers were allegedly gleaned from some RE (religious education) exam papers. Not sure if they've been on before but they are amusing all the same. No offence intended towards anyone in any form ok... 1. Adam and Eve were created from an apple. 2. Noah's wife was called Joan of Ark. 3. Lot's wife was a pillar of salt by day and a ball of fire by night. 4. Samson was a strongman who let himself be led astray by a Jezebel like Delilah. 5. Samson slayed the Philistines with the axe of the Apostles. 6. The Egyptians were all drowned in the dessert. 7. Afterwards, Moses went up on Mount Cyanide to get the ten amendments. 8. The first commandment was when Eve told Adam to eat the apple. 9. The fifth commandment is to humour thy father and mother. 10. Moses died before he ever reached Canada. 11.Then Joshua led the Hebrews in the battle of Geritol. 12.The greatest miracle in the Bible is when Joshua told his son to stand still and he obeyed. 13. David was a Hebrew king skilled at playing the liar. 14. He fought with the Finklesteins, a race of people who lived in Biblical times. 15. Solomon, one of David's sons, had 300 wives and 700 porcupines. 16. Jesus was born because Mary had an immaculate contraption. 17. St.John, the blacksmith, dumped water on his [Jesus'] head. 18. Jesus enunciated the Golden Rule, which says to do one to others before they do one to you. 19. He also explained, "a man doth not live by sweat alone". 20. The people who followed the Lord were called the 12 decibels. 21. The epistles were the wives of the apostles. 22. One of the opossums was St Matthew who was also a taxi man. 23. St. Paul cavorted to Christianity. He preached holy acrimony, which is another name for marriage. 24. A Christian should have only one spouse. This is called monotony. Nicky in Suffolk where despite the weather in the rest of the country, flooding and general mayhem, while it's been dry within a 4 mile radius of us for days!, we've just had some much needed rain - not too much and just right for giving the allotment a good watering - saves me a job bliss I can make some lace instead. [lace-chat] where were you on 21 July 1969
Hi Jean Men on the moon didn't seem too big a deal to me in July 1969, I was only 10 years old and desperately missing my mum who had recently died ( aged 39 from lung cancer - she never smoked but my father did by the packet load), I had been dumped into a convent boarding school (not wanted at home by my father anymore as I had now become an inconvenience) and basically wanted to die and be with my mum - seemed the best option at the time. Sorry to sound down but reading the e.mail it kind of hit me - I still miss her terribly even after all this time. [lace-chat] surprise package
Hi spiders I received an unexpected phone call the other week from a lady who is in the process of moving house and wanted to find a good home for some old lace! She was given mydetails andtelephoned to see if I was interested. Well you can imagine the response - yes please, where do you live (2 hours away) and can I collect when I'm passing on my way to my cousins Golden wedding celebrations on Saturday? Well during last week I was actually able to go through this bag of lace - mostly all filet crochet, five table cloths of various sizes and around 8/9 filet lace edgings all for tablecloths of various sizes, but mostly quite large. I just could not believe what I was finding, despite the dreadful condition of it all, very brown and stained. A week on and I have carefully washed all thetable cloths and a couple of the edgings and they are absolutely beautiful - can't wait to clean the rest. In the bag were also the pattern books dating from the 1930's priced 2d (old English money) so I can identify all the edgings made. One table cloth is a tape lace with needlelace fillings and is a perfect fit for my conservatory table. All the pieces were made by this ladies grandmother and her two sisters all pre 1940's, and apart from the finished pieces they had never been used. She wanted them to go to someone who would appreciate them and give them a good home rather than bin them, which is what would have happened had she not found them a home but left it until her children had the job. Still grinning madly at such a wonderful gift. [lace-chat] myth & mystery
Congratulations to all the winners, I've had a look at the Lace Guilds site and was able to look at Gallery's 2 and 3 (couldn't access gallery 1 via either web site address). Of the entries I was able to see pictures of, well they were all absolutely beautiful and very worthy winners. I shall look forward to seeing the exhibition hopefully June 20, on my way home to the Suffolk coast from a 50th wedding anniversary party the day before in Buckingham (some detour - but what the heck it will be worth it) Now looking forward to the Tonder festival and meeting a few fellow spiders there and return to have another spider (my last secret pal) visit with us from America, all very exciting. [lace-chat] Anne of Green Gables
Hi spiders The mention of Anne of Green Gables bought back a few memories, my two girls loved those stories when they were younger, watched the films over and over. My eldest daughter, Judy, has red hair just like Anne, which guess what she hates (and a similar temperament). One day when I was out, (and thought I might not notice what she'd done!!!), she decided to dye her beautiful long red hair brown - she dyed her eyebrows too! Guess what I did notice - her light green eyebrows and odd looking coloured hair!!! yep her eyebrows did turn green and stayed that way for weeks, her hair wasn't really brown and it certainly wasn't red anymore - more a sort of mucky dishwater colour. It brought tears to my eyes with all the laughter, Judy was so mortified don't think she spoke to me for a week... this time sadly its lasted two years but that is another story. I live in hope Best wishes Nicky in Suffolk To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace-chat] Re: lace-chat-digest V2004 #90
Hi Liz No we don't seem to celebrate St george's day much, and when we do try we are labelled as racist for wanting to do so. A pub in my area wanted a licence extension for St George's Day celebrations but it was refused by the authorities, he could have and does get them for St Patrick's Day etc etc but for St George - question is who are the ones being racist? You just try and fly the English flag over here and see what happens every ethinic minority is up in arms about it. Last year people were ordered to remove the English flag when all they wanted to do was show their support for the English football team! Yet the opposition flags were allowed to fly by the dozen!!! Don't all jump on me about this, as I really don't mind anyone being patriotic about their country/ football team or whatever, why shouldn't they be, but why one rule for one and another for the home country? Nicky in Suffolk > However, I see NO mention of St George's Day - April 23rd - and also > Shakespeare's Birthday. Dear Secret Pal I just love the frog, will run the battery down from playing with him too much, he is just such fun. The roller is brilliant and perfect timing, we are going to a suppliers fair on Sunday (will have to take the frog)as both my DH and I need some silk thread for making wedding garters (for two future daughters-in-law) and a roller was on my shopping list so it is just perfect. We shall enjoy using the eucalyptus rub too, smells nice, my feet will feel quite special after a long hike. All the cards that you have been sending are going into my collection too, each one has been new to me so that has been a real treat to. [lace-chat] parking cars
Reading Ruth's account of parking her new car reminded me of when my car had to go to the garage for repair. I'd got an important meeting to attend in Norwich, but no means of getting there (forget public transport it's a joke where I live!), so a friend loaned me their car for the day having first checked insurance etc. I parked the car in the multi storey car park and went off for the meeting. Several hours later I returned to collect the car looked around couldn't find it on the floor where I'd left it, so started to hunt. Began on the ground floor and checked every level but still couldn't find it. Panic was beginning to set in, but the car park attendant realising something was amiss came over and asked what was wrong. I duly explained and he asked me what type of car it was? Blank look in return, I hadn't a clue, I'd only borrowed it after all. What colour was it? Another blank look I couldn't remember. I had to phone my friend and ask him! Boy he was impressed. So now armed with the knowledge of make and colour the car park attendant helped me search the car park again, still no car. The attendant then asked me You're sure you parked in this car park? Er but this is the only car park in this block - No luv there's another just next door! Yep a little over an hour later I found the car just where I left it, but in the neighbouring car park. Last time I borrowed a car. Nickyin Suffolk To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace-chat] limescale
Hi Jean We get very hard water in our region, awful limescale around the taps, clogging up the kettle etc etc. About 18 months ago we invested in a magnet gizmo that is attached to the households incoming waterpipe, we have begun to notice a remarkable improvement over recent months, we don't get limescale around our taps anymore and the kettle doesn't need de-scaling anywhere near as often as it used to, but the water still tasted not too pleasant so we did filter drinking water. Since buying our magnetic gizmo we have discovered another product that does the same thing but does not need a power supply (which ours does). We would have gone for that in preference if we had known about it at the time. Both my husband and I use the magnetic bracelets and have found them beneficial and we now use a magnetic coaster that we stand our water jug on and it makes the drinking water sweeter so no more filtering, (it puts all the minerals into suspension or something) honest it really works, and I'm pretty sceptical about these sort of things, but I am impressed. We are now looking to get the magnet that is for the car and aids fuel consumption. The company that do these are called Ecoflow and they do have a website if you are interested in knowing more www.ecoflow.plc.uk. In the past couple of weeks I've discovered that one or two of my students have the bracelets from this same company and find them beneficial too. Dear Secret Pal Your parcel arrived today, we had a quiet but enjoyable Christmas and my DH and I are looking forward to the coming year and the various lace events that we plan to attend. I was intrigued with the Batavia bobbins when I first opened the parcel and then memory kicked in and I remembered the stamp issued in Australia some years ago picturing the bobbins, and an article I have about them. They are really wonderful and just the right size for adding to my collection of travel bobbins - thank you so very much. I shall have a good read and study of the article tomorrow - when I don't have to focus on teaching lace classes, which I do Monday - Wednesday. I'm also enjoying the selection of cards that you have been sending, the Beds hanky corner is very pretty, and they will be added to my album. Hi spiders I am posting this to both lists (I hope!). I have a number of old Maltese bobbins that recently came into my possession (about 300 actually!). They originally belonged to a Maltese lady who made lace, she died in 1950 and had owned them for about 20 years, prior to that who knows, so they are are good 70 years. Anyway I am looking to give 10 pairs of these bobbins away. If you are interested please e.mail your name to me by 27 December. I will put all the names into a hat and get someone to draw them for me on New Years Day. I am willing, as it is Christmas, to post anywhere. The calendar is ideal for my handbag, I was so pleased that you chose one which shows a little of the area in which you live - dusk at Matilda Bay wow! Those stunning pinks and mauves are incredible, and the sea is so clear and such a beautiful turquoise blue - we went for a walk along our beach yesterday (on the North sea) and it looked a murderous black just so inviting??? [lace-chat] Battle of Britain Lace Panel
Hi spiders It has been a very hectic week or so. Alice, I haven't forgotten about doing a write up about the trip to America - it really has been hectic - son getting married, daughter moved to Leicester, husband demolishing our cloakroom, teaching, helping with the organising of our lace day yesterday (Saturday with Veronica Main which was hectic but a good day) and a few other matters to boot including the exhibition of the Battle of Britain Lace Panel at The Forum, Norwich, (Norfolk, England) all last week. It was a fantastic week, beginning with the RAF Central Band and a Guard of Honour from RAF Coltishall parading outside City Hall in Norwich, there was then a flypast by a spitfire over the city before the parade made its way escorting the Lord Mayor of Norwich to The Forum, the Colours were presented and the Mayor unveiled the Lace Panel. Reg Sheppard then gave a talk on the history of the Battle of Britain and the lace panel. Reg did a magnificent job of displaying the lace panel. Two thousand exhibition brochures were printed and these had gone in two and a bit days, a further 1500 were produced overnight! Reg was overwhelmed at the response of the various lace groups/guilds who contributed to his appeal to help fund the exhibition. He told me that had it not been for the response of the lacemakers the exhibition would probably have not been able to go ahead - and asked me to pass on thanks to all those who responded. It was a very emotional time for him a dream come true, (by the way Reg is fine, he was kept in hospital overnight as a precaution, but was back Wednesday giving his talk twice a day). Thank you lacemakers. Several thousand visited the exhibition during the course of the week, many were lacemakers, and many came out of curiosity having seen publicity about it in local press etc -everyone thought it stunningly beautiful. The lace panel is absolutely exquisite, quite breathtaking. I have never seen machine lace of such superb quality. There were also press photos taken during the bombing on display, and it was these photos that Harry Cross used for designing many of the sections of the panel. I particularly loved the image of Bow Church which has the reflection of St Paul's Cathedral in its window. It was lovely to meet Jean, the owner of the panel, she inherited it from her father John Sloman, who had been behind the panels tour of Britain back in 1946-48, when Reg Sheppard accompanied it around the country. Bill Rowe (who has written a book about it called The Battle of Britain in Lace)and his wife, Evelyn also travelled up to Norfolk for the week and it was great meeting them as Bill has helped me with information about the panels that I have used for various articles that I've written and am about to write!). We enjoyed lunch on the Monday with Jacqui Barber - Chairman of the Lace Guild who came up for the day, and it was great to talk to the various lacemakers who came Carole Morris and friends from Burwell lacemakers, Audrey from Littleport Lacemakers, Sheringham Lacemakers, Norfolk Lacemakers, Suffolk Lacemakers etc etc (excuse me for any I've missed). I was also able to get some really fantastic photos of the panel with the digital camera I bought in America - I got an album put together Friday night so that it could go on display at our lace day on Saturday and I hope to add a page on Suffolk Lacemakers web site in the near future (have a few gremlins to sort out on that thanks to that nice bug that did the rounds a few weeks ago). If you get a chance to see the panel do, photos just don't do it justice. It is beautiful. [lace-chat] Secret Pal
Hello and thank you to my Secret Pal for such a wonderful and lovely surprise. But we were oh so disappointed at not meeting with your friend Claryce Manchester who so very kindly delivered the gorgeous chocolates to our hotel in Las Vegas. We had a call from the bell desk to say that there was a delivery for us - which really took us by surprise, but because of a slight mix up we didn't get the message until the next day which was why I didn't call Claryce's daughter until the following afternoon. Your lovely gift really brightened our day as did Alice's call. Briefly we had been up and ready for our coach pick up at 6.50am for our trip to the Grand Canyon, the driver threw us off the coach because we were not on his list despite agreeing that all our paper work was in order, it was highly embarrassing and very distressing as I had confirmed our booking with the tour company only the previous afternoon. The next 3 - 4 hours were spent trying to sort out the problem as no other trips were available. The coach company had put down the wrong date, for four days earlier. As we were leaving Las Vegas we had resigned ourselves to not getting to see the canyon and were feeling pretty sick about it all, especially as Papillon the helicopter operator were still expecting us! to cut a long story short, by 11.30 Papillon got back to us and said that they had been able to arrange something for us, they would fly us out to the grand canyon from Las Vegas (at their expense) so we could make our trip. We couldn't believe what we were hearing, but Papillon were absolutely brilliant. To date the manager of Showtime Tours (who messed up the trip) has not accepted any of our repeated telephone calls and has not responded to our letter of complaint at their shoddy behaviour. They have made no apology and their attitude was basically tough . We were also dealing with a problem with our hire car at the same time too. The air conditioning packed up and the firms 24 hour roadside assitance didn't materialise, in fact they wanted us to detour 200miles to them! So we were faced with driving through Death Valley and on to Las Vegas with no air conditioning, the temperature was averaging 115F. We made it, we survived the journey, but we literally fried - people we spoke to were absolutely horrified when we told them about the journey. We had gallons of water on board which we desperately needed, but it didn't stay cool for long as it reached cup of coffee/tea temperature very very quickly. We finally got the car replaced in Santa Barbara (another long story) having had to also make the journey across the Mojove Dessert too! We covered almost a 1000 miles without air conditioning! So as you see we had a rather interesting stay in Las Vegas, but thank you again for being a brilliant Secret Pal and as Clint would sort of say "making our day". [lace-chat] Posture
Sorry spiders The message I sent about posture should have gone to lace and not chat. My error, but it's nice to have chat coming through at last, thanks Alice, you were more than likely right about there not being to many messages at the moment. [lace-chat] nice to be back
Hello spiders Just wanted to say its nice to be back on chat. We had a great holiday in California. Alice it was really nice talking to you, thank you for ringing, we had had a particularly bad day in Las Vegas although we did make it out to the Grand Canyon eventually which was brilliant, but your call was so very welcome and perfect timing, and I will do a write up about our travels as you suggested okay. Just give me a day or two to sort the laundry and get some food in! Nicky in a very hot & sunny Suffolk (30 -33C so we've been told) but not as hot as Death Valley (43- 49C!) what a beautiful place. [lace-chat] posture
Hi spiders Good to be back from holiday and just catching up with you all (having a problem with chat it's not coming through). Anyway regarding aching shoulders etc, I have had a lot of problems over the years because of spinal injury and subsequent related injury and now use a lace makers chair with table fitted (a type of sit kneel stool). It has made a huge difference to me and lacemaking is so much more comfortable, the one I use is made by Lin and Nigel Mason, (my previous one was from a retail chain and without the table and was no where near as good). Have been using this particular one for about a year. It really does help with better posture and is fully adjustable and worth every penny, my husband uses it for his lacemaking whenever it is free as he finds it very comfortable too. People often ask about how it affects ones knees, well I have had knee surgery too and I have no discomfort. They are not a cure but they do seem to help reduce problems that bad posture can cause. Just my thoughts on the subject. [lace-chat] Unsubscribing
Bye for the time being fellow spiders, I shall be unsubscribing for a few weeks while we go off on our Californian Adventure, not quite in the same league as Angela's journey but still an adventure for us. Clay am really pleased that your grandson is okay. My baby (now 16 and getting very excited at the forthcoming holiday) was playing hide and seek (indoors) with his four older siblings, he was just a toddler and we were on holiday in Scotland staying at a rather large lodge . His siblings got bored when they couldn't find him and went off to play something else, come meal time no sign of 18 month old baby brother, we (including grandparents) were all frantic with worry. He was eventually found fast asleep at the back of a cupboard totally unaware of all the to do. Pam bet your delighted at being the new owner of the Channer mat. Well done. Angela, many thanks I will enjoy catching up on your adventure when I return. Nicky in a gloriously sunny Suffolk. [lace-chat] secret pals
Dear secret pal Your package arrived today, and what a lovely surprise I had when I opened it. What a lovely American sewing case - it will be greatly treasured and a constant reminder of my first secret pal, and a great place for keeping all my lace paraphernalia in. I found the tin of sweets too, they didn't last long Brian (my DH) and I enjoyed them, I shall most likely use the tin for keeping pins in. The bath bomb soak will be an enjoyable way to relax after my last class this week! Much as I enjoy teaching my lace classes, it can get tiring especially getting closer to the end of term and everyone wants to start off new projects to keep them going through the summer, and we finish three weeks early this term as we're off on holiday soon. Thank you so much and I hope all goes well, I can empathise with you. Nickyin sunny Suffolk To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace-chat] arachne commemoratives
Hi all I just received my arachne commemorative spangled bobbin and cover cloth, they are really lovely, but my husband had to laugh when he saw them, "but you don't like spiders" says he, "I know, but they are arachne spiders so that's okay" says I. [lace-chat] suffolk lacemakers web site
Hi spiders Just wanted to let you know that Suffolk Lacemakers has a new domain name for its web site it is much less cumbersome than the old address and a lot easier to locate. Some extra pages have been added and a few changes made to the previous ones. It has been a marathon job and an extremely sharp learning curve, especially with the photos, but it has been worth it - I hope. I had hoped to put a map on to show where in England we are but have been unable to locate anything that I can use without breaking copyright and I've not had time to draw one up myself, so any suggestions as to where I might find something suitable. There is also a new e.mail address for contacting the group, I have a feeling I might have teething problems with it - will have to wait and see. Am working on putting on a hit box counter thingy, (I'm not used to all the jargon yet). As before comments, helpful suggestions always welcome. [lace-chat] Digital camera
Hi spiders My DH & I are wanting to buy a digital camera when we visit California next month, can any of you recommend reputable shops/stores in San Francisco. Would love to meet any fellow spiders who might be lurking (evenings) in the area too? We are in SF 16-17 July and again 4-5 Aug so only a brief stop over. [lace-chat] advanced motoring test
Hi Patricia & spiders The reward of passing the advanced driving test is not just a matter of reduced insurance, quite a few insurance companies make no reduction for advanced motorists. It is more the satisfaction of having improved and developed your driving skills and knowledge of driving. Yes you do have driving lessons with a more highly skilled driving instructor than those you learn to drive with, and when you take your test your examiner is a class 1 police driver. My husband is currently awaitng his test date and I'm shortly to begin the training, but I have learned a lot already by simply being a passenger while my husband was under instruction.
