Re: [lace-chat] Advertising?

2003-07-23 Thread Clay Blackwell
I really have to jump in here... I agree completely with
the ban against "advertising", but I think that it's
important to be clear about what advertising IS!

Advertising is announcing the availability of products for
sale by the person who is selling the product and will be
making a profit.

It is NOT:

- an endorsement of a new product by a person who has used
it but does not stand to profit by someone else's sale of
same...

- a notice of a museum display whether made by the museum or
an interested member...

- an announcement of a lace day or similar event...

Let's encourage our museums and historical societies to keep
us notified through announcements on the list! Let's
continue to advise each other of lace days and similar
events! And let's simply delete, unread, (or better still -
block -) offending vendors who post advertisements to the
list. The offensive vendor has shown she is making an
effort to play by our rules. For that we can be grateful.

If they bother you, let me know off-list. I've got a very big cat in my closet. ;-)

On a more serious note, Jean, Vivienne and others, Liz laid down the rules of the list
when things started heating up on lace chat a few months ago. I'm here to keep an eye
on things on a day-to-day basis, but I keep my involvement to a minimum (most of my
work is helping people with subscription problems). The main advantage of having a
list moderator is that there is no need for self-appointed list police to interpret
list policies as they see fit.

If you ever feel that another list member is trying to intimidate you on or off the
list, drop me a line. I hope that list members will feel free to post about trips to
museums and lace sites. If that's not on-topic, I don't know what is.

Thanks for your reply. That must have happened while I was
unsubscribed - do you remember that time when the list got
overheated and unpleasant? It's interesting that there has been
so little mail on that list.

I think you're right. There isn't really a lot of it, and
although it seems to raise some hackles and go against the list
rules I see it as a minor problem myself.

[lace-chat] Advertising?

2003-07-22 Thread Jean Peach
I think we loose out a lot because of the Arachne police of the past, why do
I say this. Well this last week I went to Salisbury Museum having first
taken my grandson to the Army museum. I was in conversation with
one of the curators who told me that just the week previously they had
given a talk "Lace on Costume". Yes the costumes were on display
for everyone to see. Sadly few people turned up for this talk, so will
they have another? Who knows, perhaps if this had been advertised
more widely there might have been more people attend. I also realise
that the museum has a limited budget. I did enjoy the lace display
at the museum, for me the outstanding piece was the "Stumpwork
Mirror".

Plus in the beginning, we would be told about many lace making trips
that lacemakers have taken, telling us what they have seen, what
they liked etc. This is seldom done, I myself have taken many trips
but would not post to Arachne what I had seen and done.

Jean in Newbury who must get ready for college or I will be late.

Hi, I joined Lori's list but we have never heard any more. I don't think it
got off the ground.

2003-07-20 Thread Ruth Budge
Margery, you might remember that, when we had the "advertising" discussion
earlier in the year, Lori the Lacefairy offered to run an Arachne Newsletter
mailing list.

This monthly Newsletter was to be news from anyone with something to sell to
other members of Arachne, and we were given the option of subscribing to it.

The fact that I've never received anything from the Newsletter suggests to me
that "advertising" is not such a problem on Arachne as some people think ... we
are not being inundated with advertisements on the regular list, and
presumably, there have not been enough submissions to Lori for her to post even
a single Newsletter, let alone a monthly one.

There's the main list, for technical stuff (like Lace), there's
the Off-Topic list for gossip (like Lace-Chat), and there's the
"Swap" list for all swaps, raffles, adverts etc which aren't
allowed on the other two.

People can advertise all they want on the swap list, and it gets
really interesting sometimes. And if you don't want to read
adverts you just don't subscribe to that list. Simple.

I wonder if it's worth suggesting that extra split here? I know
some people here feel strongly on both sides of the fence ...
