[lace-chat] Greetings

2017-09-06 Thread The Lace Bee
Dear Fellow Gentle Spiders,

I wanted to apologise to you all for being not actively participating in the
Arachne lists over the past 18 months. I kept moving the emails into a todo
folder with the result that I never read them.

This isn't a sympathy email it's an explanation. About 18 months ago I started
to become more and more tired resulting back at the end of Jan this year with a
very severe bout of vertigo that lasted over two months. The vertigo meant I
was unable to drive, use a computer or actually do anything except sleep
without feeling sick.

As the vertigo started to clear up I started to sleep more and more until
around Easter I was sleeping 20 hours a day. In the end, I ended up at the
sleep clinic attached to a machine for 24 hours to monitor my sleep - the
results of which I get back next week. It is likely that this has been coming
on for about 2 years now.

This week I returned to work after 7 months off. Week after next we move house
to make my work journey easier.

So, I'm putting aside a couple of hours once a week to reading my Arachne
emails and replying. We are only as good as the time we out in.

On a brighter note, in our move I've acquired a fantastic room in our new house
to use for teaching. There are no teachers in the immediate area so when i out
an advert about classes I had 7 people interested in trying out lacemaking so
I'm going to be able to start up classes in my new area.

Mind you, the lace response had been eclipsed by the response to my advert for
Japanese braiding - 37 responses in two days for those workshops but I'll work
on them about trying lace.

My love to you all,

L

Kind regards

Liz Baker

[lace-chat] Greetings from Tartu, Estonia

2004-08-27 Thread Pene Piip
Dear Fellow Spiders around the world,
I thought it was time to say "hello" (or "Tere!" which is what
Estonians say when you greet someone.
We have been here for 4 weeks now & our vehicle & container
aren't due for a few more weeks. Meanwhile our 2 sons will be
starting school next week at the Tartu International School.
(There are only 19 children from Grades 1 to 10.) So I'll be
busy during the next 7 days getting the boys ready for school
and entertaining my MIL who arrived yesterday from Adelaide
via Sweden.
I have seen some tatting in one of the many handicraft shops
which sell items to tourists. I'm looking forward to seeing the
photos taken at the OIDFA Congress by some of the Estonian
attendees when I get to meet some of the members of the
Estonian Bobbin Lace Society.
Take care & keep making lace,
Pene Piip

Hi all and v. sorry T.

> And, hey, please don't rush it on us;

In my hasty look at the calendar I saw both Victoria Day and MEmorial day
on the same square but neglected to notice the '31' beside the latter -
oops! but hey chat's been slow, after I realized I was a week out I
thought maybe the digest would take a while to accumulate and I might have
been on time :~ I think last year they were on the same weekend if May 25
had been the last Monday in May.

What are some traditions related to Memorial Day?
The traditional USA Memorial Day is May 30th. Our commercially-wise
government decided 3-day weekends were desirable, so changed several
holidays to always be on a Monday, thus -- 3 day holiday weekends. And
this year, Memorial Day Monday is a week away, May 31.

I think the younger generation has lost the original meaning of the
day. It is a day off work, and a long weekend, that starts the summer
season. Many people in this area choose that weekend to go on the first
camping trip of the season. (Which usually means camping in the rain.)

Family graves are decorated -- all ancestors, not just war dead. Military
groups do have memorial services. ( I have only one grave to do. The rest
of the family are too far away. My brother gets to do them.) I'll try to
decorate my family grave on Thursday or Friday, before the crowd shows up
on the weekend.

For me -- it's mostly a normal weekend. DH works at a store that is open
all the time, so will probably work all three days. Since it includes the
last Saturday of the month, that's Lace Meeting day. ()

The first half of the weekend is supposed to be damp, but Monday should be
nice. Maybe I can pull a few weeds in my garden, or something,
outside. Then enjoy my lace pillow part of the time.

Have a nice end of May, whether you have a holiday or not.

I don't know if "Happy" is appropriate as it is to honour the war dead.
What are some traditions related to Memorial Day?
Well, first and most exciting: everyone gets the day off. :-> Many people
fly the flag on that day, and some individuals and groups go decorate and
clean graves.

Here in Boulder, Colorado, in the morning,
half the town (about 50,000 people) goes out for the 10K run/walk, called the
Bolder Boulder. One quarter of the town goes out to cheer on the runners and
walkers, and the other quarter of the town (fat and unattractive as we
are), hide
until the whole thing is over. :->

For those of you unfamiliar with the "People's Republic of Boulder,"
it is a city of thin, attractive, outdoorsey types (very annoying to us
Others) who
eat only whole grains, don't smoke tobacco and ride bikes to work.

Then, after the morning activities, people go to the mountains or
reservoir, picnic, lay around,
and groan about the fact they have to go to work the next day. Kind of
like having
two Sundays in a row. :->

[lace-chat] :-) Greetings cards that never quite made it

2004-01-22 Thread Jean Nathan
Greeting Cards that never quite made it.

My tire was thumping, I thought it was flat.
When I looked at the tire, I noticed your cat.
Sorry!

You had your bladder removed and you're on the mend.
Here's a bouquet of flowers and a box of Depends.

You've announced that you're gay, won't that be a laugh,
when they find out you're one of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Happy Vasectomy! Hope you feel zippy!
Cause when I had mine I got real snippy.

Heard your wife left you, how upset you must be.
But don't fret about it, she moved in with me.

You totaled your car and can't remember why.
Could it have been, that whole case of Bud Dry?
