[lace-chat] Re: (Ship US to UK) knitty gritty, bone weaver's song, lace instruction postcards

2011-09-04 Thread Susan Reishus
it is not now possible to send parcels surface mail from the USA,
only by
airmail which is massively expensive.  That ends my massive book
buying when
over there.  Patricia in Wales

The postal service here has become very
expensive, and service, more and more lax.  They give us the reasons why, but
huge unnamed contributors are high salaries and pensions (with lots of baby
boomers retiring), and poor work ethic from quite a few.

I would consider
DHL for shipping your books.  The cost of shipping a book changes roughly from
$50 to $15.
They aren't the best for notifying you, as I have had packages I
have not been notified of and tracking is lax, but it does get here, and
typically faster than USPS.  I didn't price out Fed Ex nor UPS for you, but
Amazon Japan uses Fed Ex for their book orders which is expensive, but you can
get 4-6 books shipped from Japan to the US, for the same dollar amount as one
book sent from the US to UK.

HTH,
Susan

The Canadian postal service is also VERY expensive. Part of the problem is
that you have to know where the parcel is going (different rates for
different post codes). This is one of the reasons I haven't put some things
on e-bay because I can't quote the postage until I know where it is going.
I guess I'll just have to take something to the post office and quote the
most expensive rate they give me.

If it's possible see if you can't get the books you are looking for in Germany
rather than the us (they tend to have a much better selection than the uk)

that's where most of my books and thread come from.
postage is ok or even free and arrives about as fast as uk 2nd class.

I think this is one reason so many eBay vendors choose the Flate-Rate
Priority mail. You figure out which container the item requires, and
you know how much the shipping will be. For a tiny little bobbin, the
lowest possible rate in Flate-Rate would be $4.95 (I think it's still
that... maybe 5.95 now?) So yes, it's expensive. But OTOH, if you can
fit two or three books into the next size up, and it ships all the way
across the country, you may have a bargain rate.
