[lace-chat] Richard III's remains identified!!

2013-02-06 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
I immediately thought of the Josephine Tey book, too. A great story, - I
must see if the library still has a copy, so I can re read it!

Brother Caedfel stories were Great too.

If the remains ere found near Leicester Cathedral, maybe they own the car
park, so can lay claim to the remains. I believe an item I heard over here
said it was once a monastery or something like that, so he was buried in
possibly consecrated ground of that time,. This may give the local cathedral
first claim on the remains.

I find it quite amazing though, that they can find and identify these bones,
and even trace a family descendant!

No you are definitely NOT alone in that desire. I've read a number of
fiction based on fact novels about them and most don't put the blame
on Richard III at all. I prefer Sharon Penman's Duke of Buckingham theory.

Jane,

Hi All, I see no one mentioned Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey. It's
a mystery story about Richard III and it says he did not kill the little
princes. I'll have to get it out, it's been a while since I read it.

Do you recall who she did blame?
Penman was very convincing with her Duke of Buckingham theory. But I
have read another - possibly by Philippa Gregory which blamed someone else.

I for one really like Richard III - well at least he seems to have
actually been in love with his wife and his marriage was NOT an arrange one.

Hi David and All, Josephine Tey seems to blame Henry VII. The book also
mentions books by Buck in the seventeenth century, Horace Walpole in the
18th and Markham in the 19th century that claim Richard III didn't kill
the Little Princes!

Guess that's why I thought it was real!

Very interesting! Jane in Vermont, USA

[lace-chat] Richard III's remains identified

2013-02-05 Thread Jean Nathan
It's appeared on our news today that funding is now being sought to excavate
a grave in a Winchester church to see if it contains the remains of Alfred
the Great. He reigned from 871 to 899. They think there are five skulls and
other bones in the grave, but it will be even more difficult to find a
living descendant to provide a DNA sample for comparison.

York Minster has written to the Queen to request that Richard III be
reburied in York Minster because he was crowned there. his son is buried
there and several other reasons, but permission was given to exhume the
skeleton at Leicester on the proviso that it was reburied in Leicester and
by August 2013.

One of the major considerations is that all the proposed burial places are
Anglican, and Richard was a pre-reformation Catholic.  Therein lies a
dilemma

[lace-chat] Richard III's remains identified

2013-02-05 Thread Jean Nathan
The problem is that the condition for granting the exhumation was that the
remains be buried in Leicester and by August 2013. Here at least you can't
just go around digging up bones no matter how old they are - there are
formalities that have to be gone through and permission has to be granted.
Presumably whoever granted the permission for the exhumation would also have
to agree to a change to the place of reburial and getting the Queen's
permission might add weight to a request for a change, although he isn't one
of her ancestors.

He was the last king of the House of York (but isn't the same person as
Richard of York; he was Richard III's father), and has no connection with
Westminster. That's why York thinks they have a claim on the skeleton and I
can see lengthy legal action by York Minster to get it changed which would
be a shame to make it into a circus.

Re: [lace-chat] Richard III's remains identified!!

2013-02-04 Thread Adele Shaak
Hi David:

I think they talk about Shakespeare as having created the humpback, the
withered arm, plus he did a hatchet-job on Richard III's character. I wonder if
in Shakespeare's day they would have seen the scoliosis (which developed on
during Richard's adolescence) as an outward sign of the evil within -
absolutely tailor-made for emotional drama!

Interesting that the descendent of Richard's family that they found, Michael
Ibsen, was the last in the line. This type of DNA goes from a mother to all of
her children, male and female, but only descends further through the female -
men don't pass it on. Michael Ibsen has a sister but she has no children. So -
one generation more and they wouldn't have had any descendant to compare DNA
with.

 Dear Friends,
I find this new archaeological discovery just fascinating. The use of
DNA technology seems to be going ahead in leaps and bounds. Hope this
 tiny URL works for you:-

My only concern is that from my extensive reading on Richard III,
authors have lead me to understand that the myth of his scoliosis was
created by Shakespeare, but perhaps that was merely the withered arm.

[lace-chat] Richard III's remains identified

2013-02-04 Thread Jean Nathan
I switched on BBC News Channel on the TV especially to watch the
announcement. Scientists with specialities in the identification each gave a
presentation before the announcement that the remains are those of Richard
III. It was extremely interesting to hear how the work they had done and the
evidence they had considered, with graphics and photographs had led to the
conclusion - until the BBC decided to interrupt it for breaking news - MP
Chris Huhne had changed his plea to guilty over asking his then wife to take
penalty points for speeding for him on her driving license! Since when was
an MP lying news? I was so cross that they'd interrupted something
so historic for that!

They went back to the press conference for Richard III, only to interrupt it
again for an update on the Chris Huhne situation. Fortunately they went
back to the press conference for the actual announcement that the remains
are those of Richard III and that they will be re-interred in Leicester
Cathedral.

Absolutely brilliant.

I seem to remember reading, or hearing, that almost contemporary historians
(to Richard III) began a hatchet job on him very soon after he died and
Shakespeare followed that line of thought/propaganda.
