(that's what I first tried too, and that disables changing the settings yes,
but the next update will turn it on regardlessly, and then the option to
disable the realtimeprotection is that grey, but you can see it is turned
on. There are some more settings to make, search for "nodefender")

For the purpose of installing a safe program (Lazarus) faster which is
known to copy zillions of files,
I observed that the process is 10 times faster when turning off
RealTimeProtection,

I guess the text you refer to is: "You can turn this off temporarily, but
if it's off for a while we'll turn it back on automatically"
I read this message as "for the purpose of boosting some setup, turning it
off is recommended" :-)

Sorry Graeme, I was replying to someone on the Lazarus forums bemoaning the
long install times when using an installer from getlazarus.org. I should
have prefaced the first line with this information. The reason I posted it
here was because I thought it would be useful if other users understood why
sometimes things don't work as intended on Windows.

On Win10, to turn it off I am using this interactive sequence:
Control Panel -> (View small icons) -> Windows Defender -> Settings ->
RealTimeProtection=Off CloudBasedProtection=Off SampleSubmission=Off
