I've wanted to learn XUL before but never had a project to learn it on. The Wikipedia article on XUL seems to be a good place to start. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XUL Shane ___ Ldsoss mailing list Ldsoss@lists.ldsoss.org http://lists.ldsoss.org/mailman/listinfo/ldsoss

> Please tell us about XUL. I'd love to hear about it. I have very little experience with XUL, but it seems like it would fit this bill. From the web page http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/The_Joy_of_XUL : "XUL (pronounced "zool") is Mozilla's XML-based user interface language that lets you build feature rich cross-platform applications that can run connected to or disconnected from the Internet. These applications are easily customized with alternative text, graphics, and layout so they can be readily branded or localized for various markets. Web developers already familiar with Dynamic HTML (DHTML) will learn XUL quickly and can start building applications right away." Thunderbird and Sunbird are built on XUL (if you're not familiar with these applications, they are the email and calendar clients based on the mozilla engine). A number of other applications have been built using XUL. I think the biggest draw is that anyone interested can easily build their own extensions, just as in Mozilla, either a simple javascript link or a full blown application built on top of or in place of the existing app. I think this has the basis for solving a lot of the problems mentioned in this thread. [Ldsoss] Plone as an example of OSS web app for local Windows deployment
I installed Plone!Well, Shane, you were right. Plone is a great example of a web app that installs beautifully for a Windows user. For everything that isn't behind the scenes, Plone appears to have acted in the conventional Windows ways. If we could do such with a Scout Tracker or any LDSOSS project, I think it would be ideal. Great lead! So now I have my browser running and it says http://localhost and there's this Plone application showing in it. And I did it all in the disinterested frame of mind required for testing such products. Now that it's running and I have something pretty in my browser, I am interested. In the background there is a box open called the Plone controller. It has a Start/Stop button (which I clicked to start) and a couple of other buttons I stayed far away from.Very, very nice. Other than the donwload link confusion, they have their ducks in a row. Tom Haws"There is no way to peace.
