[Leaf-user] Dachstein
Hi, I'd like to add another card(eth2) on my dachstein lrp and create a small DMZ web server. I know there were already pre-defined scripts on the dachstein but is there a mini-howto on this? Thanks. Re: [Leaf-user] ES2B Dachstien and Rogers@home
This is Terayon Modem and they change this modem recently, but firewall worked no problem after that even though when they change modem firewall computer was off just to not confuse technician. Right after he left I switched all cables and turned firewall no problem (reseting modem before of course) I received bulletin that Rogers is making some changes with email server (removing "home" from there). Maybe this has something to do with that. Before I left for few weeks I skipped firewall and connected my sons computer directly. After I came back firewall can't bound lease to eth0. Very interesting Jacques!!! It seems this is just what I have been looking for as I want a LEAF platform that uses 2.4.12 kernel (or newer) to support latest pcmcia and wireless tools. However, at first glance I was not able to locate the orinoco_cs wireless drivers... are they hiding somewhere, or not included in the collection you have built? I am on Shaw@Home in Calgary, Canada. I just upgraded to Dachstein CD and did not have to add anything to the dhclient config. The firewall still works fine. As a data point, it is with an old beige Motorola Cybrsurfer cable modem. I used to have tons of intermittent problems I thought were DHCP related (PC light on cable modem wouldn't light) that went away when I switched from generic to 3COM ISA NIC's. [Leaf-user] LEAF 2.4.14 / Shorewall 1.1.18 based distro (alpha version)
Following my previous post on how to get rid of LRP kernel patches I have created a 2.4.14 base LEAF version with SHOREWALL as default firewall. Please consider this work as preliminary. All the stuff is here: http://leaf.sourceforge.net/devel/jnilo/kernel-2.4.14/ The diskimage is: http://leaf.sourceforge.net/devel/jnilo/kernel-2.4.14/leaf-2.4.14-1680.b in use the command: dd if=leaf-2.4.14-1680.bin of=/dev/fd0u1680 to move it over to a floppy If you need extra kernel modules there are in: http://leaf.sourceforge.net/devel/jnilo/kernel-2.4.14/modules/ 1/ Kernel It's plain vanilla 2.4.14. They are 3 config files and 3 corresponding UPX compressed kernel in the directory. Small & Normal correspond to Charle's Dachstein. Mini does not have any IDE/PCMCIA support. 2/ Distro This 2.4.14 version is basically derived from the new dachstein-rc2 distro. Ipchains and related stuff has been removed and replaced by iptables 1.2.4. See: http://netfilter.samba.org/ Firewall is the nice tool designed by Tom Eastep, Shorewall in it's latest 1.1.18 version See: http://www.shorewall.net/ 3/ TO-DO's (among other things) 1/ clean-up /etc/init.d/network, /etc/network.conf and /etc/ipfilter.conf to get rid of all the unecessary stuff. 2/ In the above mentioned files check the QoS and bridge stuff 3/ modify /linuxrc to copy the initial initrd.gz to tmpfs and then pivot_root from there. Will allow to adjust the size of the filesystem dynamically. Pivot_root is provided in the busybox library. 4/ allow backup of initrd.gz ??? (not really useful, to my opinion) 5/ Adjust weblet script to take care of firewall messages Any feedback/ideas/help on the 5 points mentionned and any other would be welcomed! I feel redundant in saying this, but my experience with an @Home setup I did for someone else taught me a) make sure the dhclient knows the name @Home assigned, and b) verify that the firewall isn't interfering. Just out of curiousity is your modem a blue Terayon Modem - made out of plastic, kinda looks like a shark's fin?? that is the type my friend has, - and is different than my type of modem. It could also be a rogue dhcp server as the resolution of a traceroute seems a little odd for the DHCP address. S >From: "C. [Leaf-user] Port forwarding trouble
Hello I have been using ES2B för a while but want to migrate to Dachstein. I have setup the RC2 and it all works well except portforwarding. The INTERN_FTP_SERVER= etc works fine but the INTERN_SERVERS= gives me errors when the network starts, even uncommenting the example gives me errors like "IP filters: portfw: illegal local address/port specified /sbin/ipchains: option requires an argument -- s" and something about invalid protocol. Is this a bug in RC2 or a setup problem? Regards Pär Johansson -- ___ Leaf-user mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/leaf-user

Re: [Leaf-user] Comparison between LRP and the hub/router
One thing a LEAF firewall has over a SOHO firewall (Such as netgear, linksys, etc) is the ability to add packages such as DNS, web server, intrusion detection, and my personal favorite, the Socks5 proxy for the ever so troublesome but always useful, ICQ instant messenger (which ive yet to hear of anyone being able to receive files when firewalled with a SOHO unit). It really depends on what the user needs, because in really simple cases (AKA...home user with a few PC's) I usually recommend a Linksys unit. For anyone who needs anything more advanced I recommend and usually setup a LEAF firewall. -Kenneth Hadley - Original Message - From: "Binh Do" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, November 20, 2001 9:33 AM Subject: [Leaf-user] Comparison between LRP and the hub/router > I have the official release (v1.0.1) of Dachstein-CD up over the weekend and > was very very excited > about it. [Leaf-user] Comparison between LRP and the hub/router
I have the official release (v1.0.1) of Dachstein-CD up over the weekend and was very very excited about it. Thanks, Charles. I convinced a couple of friends to use LRP (usually 1-floppy) but some said they prefer a ready hub/router in home environment (3-4 computers) because: + price: a Linksys hub/router costs around $110 Canadian dollars. If you have to go and buy a complete LRP box (2 NICs, a hub, a computer box with 16M), it costs more than that unless you go to used-computer shop and not everyone knows howto. + job done: the hub/router could also do NAT, IPSEC, PPPOE and DMZ. + setup: definitely hub/router is easier than LRP I have never used the hub/router and so do not have any experience about that. I have them sent every morning after the logs are rotated. I have appended the following line to my /etc/crontab file. It is on one line with no breaks. That did the trick, however on a side note the pci-scan must be loaded before the other modules. (8390 & ne2k-pci) Thanks for the quick reply. Great job on the release! The wanpipe card worked great on LRP and when I replaced the kernel with eigerstein. I'm not certain if you got the wanpipe to function at all with the LRP or eigerstein versions. Actually, I'm not even certain what version I'm currently running, it's been a while. But, here's some info from my modules & network.conf that *may* help you, as well as some info from the wanpipe.conf: Based on my comments in the code, this was added for a Sangoma S514/ft1 connected to a T1 line & Cisco on the other end.
