Re: [leaf-user] Is Bering 2.4.18 Modules tree on CD Safe?
I'm no expert on risk assessment but. . . I don't know if it's a risk, but from a peace of mind perspective, why not just rip out all the non-nic and cdrom related modules? That way, you're prepared for different HW configurations for a basic Bering system, but you don't have to worry about anything else. Creating and sending out a new iso *if* you need more capability *sometime* in the future seems like a small price to pay on balance. -arif --- This SF.NET email is sponsored by: A Thawte Code Signing Certificate is essential in establishing user confidence by providing assurance of authenticity and code integrity. [leaf-user] Is Bering 2.4.18 Modules tree on CD Safe?
I just set up 2 Bering-1-STABLE systems that boot from CD and read configs from the floppies. In the end I'll have 4-5 systems running and want to have a master CD that they each run so package upgrades just means send out 5 .iso to the local folks to burn an run. Currently my CD has a set of packges I'm likely to need and none of the packages I'm afraid a hacker could use against me. [leaf-user] Primus Canada with Dachstein? Confirmation please.
Greetings, I have been using Dachstein with Canada's Bell Sympatico for the past 2 years and it works great. However, due to the pricing factor and the download cap (of Sympatico), I'm thinking of switching to Primus Canada. Before I make the switch, I would like to be certain that my existing Dachstein (with PPPoE) will continue to work with Primus. I don't see any reason why it won't, but come confirmation will definitely be nice. Can anyone please confirm? Re: [leaf-user] Bering + Orinoco wireless
Newton, I have several Bering boxes running with the Lucent Silver cards. Aside from WEP, they should be the same as yours. I'm running firmware 8.1 also, but I do note that there is an 8.72 available now. Don't know if that breaks anything with Bering! I've seen similar reset messages on my systems when I try to move a lot of data and the connection strength is not good. However, I don't think that is the problem in your case - the log entry mentioning Intersil is a red flag. The system seems to think you have a PRISM2 card if I recall what Intersil is correctly. I went through the problem of Intersil being found and eventually cleared out the different configuration files of all unnecessary card entries before the card was identified correctly. Somewhere I saw a comment that the driver doesn't always see the card correctly if you specify a portion of the MAC address in the config... I used the *,*,*,* in the end and that, perhaps in conjunction with a very clean config file, solved the problem. I was suspicious that the script was perhaps reading the configuration files oddly as it seemed to skip over my card and settle on the Intersil as the next best thing. Anyway, these suggestions are based on not a whole lot ;-) But they did do the trick for me! I took my laptop and both Orinoco cards to the local Cup O' Joe coffee shop, which offers free wireless access (http://www.internet-oasis.com/). In turn, I inserted each card and it was immediately recognized by the system (running Debian sarge, but using woody's pcmcia-cs and wireless-tools packages). 'sudo /sbin/dhclient eth1' immediately gave each card an IP address. I used a generic /etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts file for this (ie: unmodified from the pcmcia-cs package). Re: [leaf-user] network stopping under wisp with heavy load
Then I don't know. I do use dd to make images of live system from time to time and never had such a problem. Could it be CF problem? Can you check it on another PC/hard disk? From a linux machine I tried "ssh root@netier dd if=/dev/ntfla1 | dd of=doc.img" and the command would stop about 18 megs into. I then create a 32meg /tmp (64 meg total memory) and dd and gzip the image to /tmp and tried to ftp it off to my linux box. The ftp with hash turned on would stop about 8 megs into it. In both cases my wisp box would not respond to pings nor would it be able to ping other machines. Restarting the network from wdistconfig would wake the box up. Is this a known problem ? I found that there are patches for hermes.c. Don't know if Bering-orinoco needs the same patches. One explanation was that hermes.c does not do another scan after it detects errors on its first read. Where can I locate the source of the pcmcia-orinoco.lrp ? I still wonder if there is memory conflict problem between the orinoco card and another device on the same system. I may have to de-populate my system to find out if it is the case. If someone can confirm that this may be the case, it will be very helpful.
