[leaf-user] Anyone using SBC Yahoo DSL?

2002-12-19 Thread M Lu
Hi,

A friend of mine in Chicago would like to subscribe to SBC Yahoo DSL
package, which gives him 5 static IP, for about $70 a month. From their Web
site regarding the equipment
(http://www.sbcdslstore.com/default.asp?refDomain=www05), they say that they
are selling some additional, stand-alone network components and accessories
to enhance the DSL connection. And they also say that the SBC DSL Internet
access service includes basic equipment needed to get started.

Also according to the site, Linux is compatible but not supported.

If anyone uses SBC Yahoo can let me know if he has to buy any other
equipment for the 5 static IP package or can I just help him to use Bering
directly with the basic equipment included in the package?

Thank you.

All of the equipment on that entry page is standard gear for an SBC DSL
install (NIC, DSL modem, and filters). The stuff on the linked pages is
more sophisticated hardware that includes mini firewalls/routers/etc, he
doesn't need it, if you can install a bering box. Static IP's should be
a simple setup...no PPPoE cr@p to fuss with.

Re: [leaf-user] Anyone using SBC Yahoo DSL?

2002-12-19 Thread Ray Olszewski
I've had occasion to use SBC's 5-address service (back when it was called
"Enhanced Home DSL" or something similar) twice, both times in the SF Bay
Area. I suspect that is the same service they now sell as "SBC Yahoo DSL",
particularly since my 1-address SBC DSL changed to that name a couple of
months ago with no observable effect on performance.

In both cases, I was able to add a Debian-based router to NAT a LAN behind
*one* of the addresses with no trouble. Using 1 router to firewall all 5
addresses will require you to run proxy arp on the router (or persuade SBC
to modify its routing tables, but I doubt they will do that for you).
Assuming Bering handles proxy arp smoothly, everything else should be no
problem at all.

Here, the DSL "modem" SBC provided was always Ethernet based (though I once
had to insist on this, back when they tried to push USB-based modems for a
brief time), but you do want to make sure of that.

Thank you Adrian for the information.

I do not know if static IP setup is simple yet, as some ISPs give you static
IP but you need to get them via DHCP so you still have to run some kind of
DHCP client.

This was not the case when I ran the services I described in my prior reply

You don't need any DHCP client. They assign you a static
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/29 block. I'm having no problems using it with a simple
Bering installation.

That's would be great. And regarding your previous message, yes, I am
thinking of running Proxy ARP as explained in Tom Eastep's Shorewall
documentation.

Thanks,

And I assume that you get the 5 IPs with prroxy ARP. As an alternative, can
I setup IP aliases too?

See http://shorewall.sf.net/shorewall_setup_guide.htm -- that guide covers
setting up a 5-IP installation.

2002-12-19 Thread Michael Bonner
If you connect a generic hub to the DSL modem, you can connect up to 5
interfaces using the static IP addresses. If you wish to utilize
multiple IP addresses on a single interface then you can either use IP
aliases or Proxy ARP. The DSL modem doesn't really care, SBC is just
configuring it to bridge your network to theirs over the specified
subnet range so how you use the /29 subnet is totally up to you and what
your OS supports.

Be aware that firewalling multiple static IP addresses is somewhat more
complicated than masquerading behind a single static IP address. (See
Proxy-ARP or Static NAT in the Shorewall documentation at
http://www.shorewall.net). I did proxyarp with kernel 2.2, and from the
look of the documentation Shorewall/kernel 2.4 makes this job a lot easier
than it used to be, but I haven't used it recently.
