[Leaf-user] Kernel Panic

2001-04-27 Thread Rueter, Lars

Hi,

I get the following error message when booting the new "oxygen-032901.bin"
Image:

initrd extends beyond end of memory (addr1 > addr2)
disabling initrd
[...]
Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 01:00

I have tried this on two different systems both PIII500 with 128 RAM.

The syslinux.cfg remained unchanged.

Has anybody come across this problem?

The EigerStein Image works fine.

Regards Lars

[leaf-user] Kernel panic

2003-09-08 Thread Homer Parker

Ok... I've done my normal, and it isn't wanting to work :( Created a
Bering 1.2 floppy, booted from it, copied the files to a CF, edited
syslinux.cfg and changed boot and package_path to /dev/hda1, syslinux the
CF, and I get:

LILO 22.3.4 Loading Linux.
BIOS data check successful
Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:01

This is an old P133, Intel chipset, 16MB RAM... It boots fine from the
floppy.. Any ideas?

Lars,
Not that I know of. You may have found a bug.

Did you experience the same problem with the 032601 release?
Did you try a machine with less memory (18M-32M)?

Note: your P3 is wasted for this type of application. Most people are using
486s or low end Pentiums for Oxygen.

Although I can't give you any difinitive answers, I may be able to point you
in the right direction.

You might want to read the section on Booting from an IDE device in the
bering users guide: http://leaf.sourceforge.net/doc/guide/bubooting.html as
you:

* may have copied ldlinux.sys to the CF..
* may have forgotten to copy the ide-mod.o, ide-disk.o and the
ide-probe-mod.o modules to /boot/lib/modules
* may have forgotten to declare those modules in /boot/etc/modules

Apart from this, I've no idea..

Either

1. recompile the kernel to include the ide drivers

OR

2. include the ide modules in the initrd.lrp package, and
have them loaded before you load the other packages.

Basically, the ide drivers need to be loaded BEFORE the package
list is loaded.

(I dont' have a CF Bering box handy, so I can't give you the
detail I'd like)

Cheers.

[leaf-user] Kernel Panic Error

2008-03-31 Thread chaitanya arun deosthale

Hi,
Well i'm using LEAF on VMware. Here's the steps i followed

1.extracted the bootdisk.ima file from the Bering iso
2.Edited the syslinux.cfg to add the snmp related modules to it.
3.Replaced the original bootdisk.ima with the modified one
4.Created an ISO using Nero or Ashampoo
5.I pointed the cd rom of Vmware to this iso and the floppy image to the
modified bootdisk.ima But while booting Leaf its givin Kernel Panic Attempted
to kill init error

What is the problem? Is it with the iso creation because i followed the HOWTO
on creating a bootable cd from windows on the wiki and it was givin an error on
the mkisofs.exe no such file or dir found. I just need a way to compile an iso
of my configuration and test it on my VMware before burning the working config
of LEAF.

Awaiting your reply.Thanking you in advance for the help

I think one possible issue is that VMWare has an issue with the larger
floppy size. I ran into this on VMWare Server and it has been a while so I
don't know if that is still a problem.

Try copying the files to a standard 1.44MB floppy.

No issue there: running a 1680 myself...

Never managed to get that working on a physical drive though.

> Try copying the files to a standard 1.44MB floppy.

I Agree: 1440 is always the safest choice. But AFAIK the floppy image on
the ISO *is* a 1440

==
I just looked at the syslinux.cfg inside the image and I noticed it
specifies /dev/fd0 as the boot device. Checking my own box however it
does not allow me to mount the floppy as /dev/fd0 and neither did my old
1.2 Bering distro. This may be hardware related, although my old distro
ran on a physical P66, but I've always had to specify /dev/fd0_u1440 on
the old box and currently use /dev/fd0_u1680 on the VM environment.

BTW: I use the CDROM as the boot device and the floppy only has the
LEAF.CFG and DB files.

Re: [leaf-user] Kernel Panic Error

2008-04-02 Thread chaitanya arun deosthale

Well, Thanks for your input [EMAIL PROTECTED] i agree with you the image on the
iso is 1440,So i think there shouldn't be any issues.I figured out the issue is
with the iso i have created through Nero.It isn't loading the packages which i
have specified through it, but on specifying the cd -rom path to the original
Bering iso[working LEAF] ,the error is not there.
Also i'm having LEAF.cfg on the iso, only the bootdisk.ima and DB files on the
floppy. Its like i'm using floppy to boot and record the changes and using the
CD for copying the necessary packages as and when required.
Then after my configuration is over,i plan to use the CD as the boot device
and boot up LEAF.
So i've got the following query
 1.When i edit the bootdisk.ima from the ISO,it writes the config.db and
modules.db in that bootdisk.ima
2.I've extracted the iso contents to a folder named LEAF. When i replace the
bootdisk.ima with this modified one , should mkisofs be used to recreate the
iso or creating the iso from nero or ashampoo would do the trick
3.Also i checked out the HOWTO of creating a bering bootcd in windows but it
was giving some error on the mkisofs
I've narrowed the problem down to that being of iso creation.Kindly help me
in creating a bootable Bering-LEAF iso

  Thanking You,

Chaitanya

Obviously you need some kind of writable media, preferably one that can
be hard-protected. 3.5" Floppydisks are ideal for this situation because
they all come with a write-inhibit switch.

I used Nero before on my old Bering distro but couldn't make it work
with the uClib version. Use mkisofs from the cdrecord project and get
isolinux from the syslinux project. Don't put anything on the iso that
you don't want to use, including the bootdisk.ima which would only be
usefull if you use some El Torito scheme. You cannot use El Torito
however since this is based on floppy emulation and will conflict with
the actual floppy drive.

This is how I created mine:

==
   D:\cdrtools\mkisofs -o bering.iso -b isolinux.bin
   -c isolinux.cat -no-emul-boot
   -boot-load-size -boot-info-table
   -hide isolinux.cat -hide isolinux.bin
   -l diskcontent
==

isolinux can be found here: http://syslinux.zytor.com/iso.php

Config file example here: http://raf2000.fortunecity.com/tips.html
(which is my actual config)

Slight error during copy-paste:

The -boot-load-size parameter should be followed by the number 4

==
 D:\cdrtools\mkisofs -o bering.iso -b isolinux.bin
 -c isolinux.cat -no-emul-boot
 -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table
 -hide isolinux.cat -hide isolinux.bin

I'm not booting from cd so I'm not sure how to use that info. and I haven't removed
the LRP variable. I am only using one floppy so the PKGPATH
should be correct. The disc is in fact a 1680:msdos.

display syslinux.dpy
timeout 0
default linux initrd=initrd.lrp init=/linuxrc rw root=/dev/ram0
boot=dev/fd0u1680:msdos PKGPATH=/dev/fd0u1680
LRP=root,etc,local,modules,keyboard,iptables,pump,shorwall,ulogd,dnscache,weblet

I'm not sure what to do from here. Maybe the earlier VFS Can't find Minix V2 fs on
dev 02:00 is the real culprit but I was under the impression that
"can't find minix blah" was not really an error. Thanks for any advice.

Kernel panics can be hard to diagnose, since they leave very little
information about their causes to examine. Even with the complete screenful
of stuff you actually saw (the "lots of data"), analysis requires uncommon
expertise.

But ... if you are using a strandard LEAF production kernel, the odds are
that your problem is not a Linux problem. Hardware problems also sometimes
cause kernel panics, and I've actually seen them result from --

1. CPU overheating.

2. Bad RAM.

3. Some sort of odd interaction involving swap ... I think an unusual IDE
controller that was not well supported by Linux, but I never did solve that
one for sure.

Although I haven't sen it myself, the mention of the interrupt handler
makes me wonder about a problem with either the NIC or the USB device.

The only likely source of the problem that is Linux related is modules, if
you are using anything at all non-standard there (for example, how do you
support the USB DSL interface?).

BTW, the blinking LEDs are a standard signal of a kernel panic.

I'm not booting from cd so I'm not sure how to use that info. and I
haven't removed the LRP variable. I am only using one floppy so the PKGPATH
should be correct. The disc is in fact a 1680:msdos.
It does not only apply to CD lrpkg.cfg. The reason to use lrpkg.cfg is that
the configuration line in syslinux.cfg is limited to IIRC 256 characters.
If you have many packages this is a real limit.

display syslinux.dpy
timeout 0
default linux initrd=initrd.lrp init=/linuxrc rw root=/dev/ram0
boot=dev/fd0u1680:msdos PKGPATH=/dev/fd0u1680
LRP=root,etc,local,modules,keyboard,iptables,pump,shorwall,ulogd,dnscache,weblet
This looks pretty OK to me, so are you certain your hardware
(floppy, floppydrive) is OK? Do you have space left on your single floppy?

HTH

Erich

Are you sure that the four lines above from default linux to ..., weblet are
on a single line in your syslinux.cfg ?

I'm using following modules:

adiusbadsl usb-uhci usbcore [adiusbadsl usb-uhci]

^These are suspected for me (i encounter strange behavior at full
saturation of bandwidth {512/120kbit} - ADSL modem hangs and router

eagle} (I've written a script for doing that - probably caveman style
but it's working:-))

packages I'm using:
ppp ver. 2.4.1-pppoe
eagle ver. 1.0.4

[leaf-user] Kernel panic when booting from CF Card on WRAP System

2006-05-10 Thread James VS
I am using Bering-uClibc 2.4.1 usb image loaded on a 128mb CF card running
on a PC Engines WRAP system (128MB Ram, 266MHz Proc, & 3 NICs)

I have read what documentation and user group infomation that I could get to
without sucess.

I have modified the syslinux.cfg file from the usb image file download to
point to hda & hda1 using 32MB.

error message that system hangs is:
LINUXRC: Mounting a 32M TMPFS filesystem...
LINUXRC: InstallKernel panic: Attempted to kill init!
ing - root: roo t(nf!) config: config(nf!) etc: etc(nf!) local:
local(nf!) -
Finished.
..: 285: Can't open /var/lib/lrpkg/root.dev.own

Any help would be great.

Hello James,

Please post the contents of your leaf.cfg and syslinux.cfg.
Did you use the initrd_ide.lrp package (which contains the ide drivers)?
