Bering uses pump.lrp by default.

Ok, I finally got the via-rhine driver installed, but now I can't get the
dhcp client running (I've got a cable modem internet connection). After
some browsing through the docs I noticed dhclient.lrp is not standard
included in Bering, which seems strange since the default network setup
is eth0 dhcp, eth1 fixed IP. Dhcpd.lrp is included though. Do I need the
dhclient package, or am I missing something? Also, are there any remote
login tools included in the standard boot disk?

Re: [leaf-user] DHCP client

To clarify, however...

Bering is indeed setup to use pump.lrp by default, and it works
extremely well. HOWEVER, since Bering is set up so that you can use
DHCP, PPP, or PPPoE with the default image, pump.lrp is NOT loaded by
default in syslinux.cfg.

So, if you open up syslinux.cfg and add pump to the LRP= statement,
you should have no issues getting your Bering box to grab an IP from
your provider for eth0.

Hmm... Strange, it was in my syslinux.cfg, and I didn't do it myself.
Anyway, when I run ps I see pump -i eth0 running, but when I try to
ping either google or my proxy, I get nothing. I don't know yet if I
don't get an IP, or if the problem lies with contacting the DNS.
How can I check if I've been granted an IP address? Ifconfig doesn't
seem to be part of the LEAF distro, and I don't know what else checks
it.

Or you can do

pump -s

it will tell you more details about the DHCP status of your router. Try to
ping IP instead of names first as you may need to specify the DNS. Your ISP
DNSes will be listed in the output of the above command.

Running ip addr returns no ip for eth0. Eth1 gets the static address
it has been assigned. Running pump -s returns "Operation failed", as
do pump -R or -r, with or without adding pump -i eth0.
I tried switching the order of the nic drivers to see if it was a
hardware problem. They both run fine as eth1, and fail to collect an
ip as eth0. I tried not loading the shorwall package (read somewhere that
it might block packages from the dhcp server), to no avail. My debian
box has no problem connecting, no fancy configurations required by the
provider, same /etc/network/interfaces as the default LEAF box one
(minus the static eth1, only one nic). Dhclient gets an ip no problem.
Really, I have no idea what might be going wrong. I briefly tried running
with the dhclient.lrp package, but it seems to require a file called
/etc/init.d/network in some scripts, which isn't there. Maybe I need to
explore this route further, but it's strange that pump doesn't want to
work.

pump is badly broken in a way which causes many DHCP servers to ignore
it. It sends requests with the source address of the internal interface
instead of the standard 0.0.0.0; most ISPs have their DHCP servers to
ignore requests coming from ranges (esp. RFC1918 addresses) which they
don't provide.

It took a little work moving files around to get dhclient.lrp working on
wisp-dist but it was otherwise uneventful.

Chris

The concept is that if this name was given to you by your ISP, their DHCP
server will expect to see it and give you your IP based on that name.

This technique is optional on the part of the ISP, and in my experience is
not very common.
