After the match we took the dog for a walk and discussed the four games
we have seen over the past two weekes. We did feel that in a limited
time Roy Hodgson had made a start at dealing with a malaise that has
permeated the England National team for several years. Admittedly a lot
of that has been fuelled by a moronic press iaded and abetted by a
distant FA. No off the pitch shennaigans this time round, no rumbles
from within the team camp and no widldy optomistic forecasts from a team
that always looked like it would never get further than the group

[LU] New levels of indifference

2012-06-25 Thread Sutton / Smail
I thought the England team gave all they had - their downfall was mainly
that they were outplayed and outthought. Apart from some terrible passing
and hoofs up the park (which is in line with a team uncomfortable with the
ball and under pressure aka Leeds United) there was no more in the tank. I
think it's more appropriate to be giving credit to the Italian side who
prevented England playing.
What is depressing is that England as a footballing nation have fallen
further behind and although the Premiership is perceived as one of the
best leagues, when it comes down it, England are barely in the top six
globally. We're out now which is about right, we qualified from a weak group
and if Italy hadn't seen us off, rest assured Germany or Spain would have.
So when everyone's gutted about the exit defeat, I can't help thinking
what people really expected. At least we have avoided the humiliation of a
thrashing by Germany or Spain.

I heard a few people saying they thought England were in the top six - really?
Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, without even touching
Africa etc. Top 20 maybe, but there is little between England and a whole host
of other countries who have little going for them.

I think the FA need to accept the Premier League experiment has failed - our
footballers arn't getting better with exposure to decent foreign footballers -
they're getting worse, as they can 'hide' behind them. If anyone is truly
bothered about having a decent national team then it has to change, but, as
usual, money will talk so get used to the sort of abject embarrassment that was
last night.

Ashley Young - the new David Beckham i.e. will be THE figure of abuse
everywhere - he was already well on his way, and has just cemented his
uselessness in the national consciousness. Dive dive dive!

Thank God it's over and we can concentrate on Le Tour, where Engald have
genuine stars and a chance of winning. Mind you, there's a couple of days of
Wimbledon before all brits are knocked out.

immediate. Someone said this morning, I think on the Today programme,
 give it 10 to 12
 years.

It was the Today programme, and they were talking about skills coaches, and the
fact that Germany and Italy have about 12 skills coaches to 1 in England, the
German and Italian skills coaches have been in place for about 10 years, that
the FA are only now investing in these specialist coaches, hence it taken 10 to
12 years for their endeavours to come to fruition and our national team improve.

I thought another good point made in that piece was that the Premier League is
so popular because it employs both the skilful foreign footballer, and the
heart on his sleeve give all for the team English player. Together it makes
for entertaining football. Unfortunately you can't win with heart on sleeve
give all footballers at international level. But you can't just blame the
FA/PL. Heart on sleeve players are very very popular with English football
fans - I've stated before Deano is my fave Leeds player, and he wasn't the most
gifted technically :-/ And look at the adoration Becchio gets? Contrast that
with some of the more technically gifted players we've had, Kewell for
instance, they're just not as popular (and he wasn't even before he weaselled
out of the club).

Mind you, I can't imagine why anyone's looking forward to tennis? It's about

And it's not all over, the Euro's that is, there's still the semi's as

Okay, this list is really on it's last legs it seems. I know it's a
Leeds list and we're far away from the England International scene but
England have jsut played a quarter final against Italy and lost on pens and
not ONE post about it??? Okay, well now there's one.
  1. Apart from the first 10 minutes England were rubbish and if Italy
hadn't left their shooting boots at home England would have and should have
lost this game 4-0 at least.2. Italy decided Gerrard was the playmaker and
so put at least two players on him at all times and played him right out of
the game. England just let Pirlo rule the midfield, they backed off and
backed off and let him walk the ball up into England's final third.
Shocking.3. Positives. England tried hard and put a lot of energy in.4.
Passing. Unbelievable how bad England's passing was all night, simple 5
yard balls were overhit, bad passing choices were made with passes going to
marked teammates, and in addition long hopeful punts upfield were gobbled
up by the Italian defence. Also, England simply didn't try and use the
width of the park, even when Walcott came on they rarely tried to push down
the wings.5. Woeful and should be dropped. Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young,
Steven Gerrard, and Danny Welbeck. Utter
  u
tter anonymity from those four.6. Deserve a grudging nod of respect.
Joleon Lescott - Made a number of vital last ditch blocks. Milner - He
tried and tried and tried although nothing came off. Glen Johnson - Again
seemed to make a number of important blocks, and tried pushing forward. He
got the ball caught under his feet for his goal attempt but nearly scored,
actually a great save from Buffon. Ashley Cole - Defended well, tried to
get forward, had the balls to stand up there and take that all important
penalty at least even though he completely bottled it.7.

Agreed - but...if he'd been about 1/100th of a second later on contact with
that 90th minute overhead, he'd have scored the goal of the tournament and
been hailed a national hero.

Look at the slo-mo and he toe-ends it. But he was right on line - a
fraction later and it'd have come off his laces and hit the target - and
probably
would have beaten Buffon.

Just like Gazza in 96 v Germany, on such slender margins are our hopes

It pains me to say it, but Ireland were definitely the worst team in the whole
tournament, closely followed by England - yes, even worse than Greece.

I can't watch an England match these days without a non-stop pass count in my
head: 1-2-3, ball lost and repeat... It is STAGGERING to see how England cannot
maintain possession. The two good moves they had yesterday were the result of a
string of consecutive passes, but otherwise it was constant losing the ball and
crazy champagne passes. Truly amazing, like they were allergic to it. I used
to take huge enjoyment from England being hopeless, but now it's just
ridiculous. Young, Milner and yes, Gerrard, truly shocking.

For those of you who haven't seen them, check out Liam Brady and Eamon Dunphy's
half and full time analysis from RTE on YouTube. Priceless.

On to my adopted Spain: what IS annoying though is that people say Spain's
games are boring like it was Spain's fault, WTF! Spain are the Barcelona of
world football at present obviously but France did a Chelsea and employed a
blanket defence. Understandable tactic from the french, but if you pick 2 extra
defenders you're gonna get the ball even less. Yes the game was a bit dull but
blaming the spanish is lunacy.

2012-06-25 Thread Nigel Sykes
So unbeaten in 4 games , winning 2 but we were the second worst team there

 What a load of nonsense

Agreed. But they may have played almost the worst football to watch. Roy
gave England a game plan (based on their limited abilities) that revolved
around defending and trying to sneak a winner. It paid off throughout the
group stages, and to be honest almost paid off last night as well. Not that
that would have been a fair result in any way, but that's football. Where
it went spectacularly wrong for England last night was their inability to
attack with any fluidity at all, which left them clutching at a meagre
selection of free kicks and corners as the only avenue to scoring. Even if
they had sneaked a win last night though (e.g. if Rooney's bicycle kick had
connected), then it is surely inconceivable that Germany would have been
unable to break them down as well.

What was really disappointing about last night was the apparent inability of
so many of the English players to do the most basic things. At all. The
forwards were woeful, and the midfielders were played out of the game to the
extent that I'd forgotten some of them were playing. Carrol and Rooney
repeatedly gave the ball away with no sign of control beyond the first touch
(if that). Young controlled the ball, but then ran aimlessly into tackles
as if he had no clue what else to do. It's always been a source of
puzzlement to me how a malaise such as this can overtake an entire team, and
England seem to be susceptible to it more than most.

Why anyone thought it was a good idea for Young to take a penalty after the
sort of game he'd had, I will never know. But then I can't imagine why he
was still on the pitch beyond half time anyway.

loss there. He gets a yellow then someone else takes uo the job. Please let one

think that is probably true for 60 or 70 minutes of last night's 120 and I

England might have played the worst football but many people around

worse after the opening 1-1 draw) and I think that given the way we applied
last night's game plan, we would have had a decent chance of beating
Portugal.

Russia, Holland Denmark might well be aggrieved on going out in the group
stages but we were worthy Euro 2012 Quarter Finalists (failed) ;)

Hey Betty,

Just sounds like you have your 'resolution' set too high and the computer
graphics adapter cannot compete with it. Try the old monitor with basic
settings, then plug in the new monitor without altering the settings.

If that don't work, then try Eric's suggestion of swapping cables, try
another computer, evern plug into a laptop and try that way.

Could be many things, but if it gets a picture in the first place, it looks

are you sure? he doesn't work for Gucci anymore and never owned it - the
latest info is he has joined Philip Morris purveyors of cancer to the world

maybe he's fronting a consortium, which is worrying since the people behind

nothing to do with the meat hooks.
