I think I might have been that "someone."

I am more than happy.I am ecstatic..to admit that I
underestimated the lad.

To think that we blew away the form team of the division with a makeshift
team, well it is literally incredible!

My only mild regret is that Jackie H made his ONLY misjudgement of the
entire match with the last kick of the game. If he had played that ball
inside to any of the about 99 Leeds players who were forming a socially
distanced queue along the line of the penalty spot whilst the red-faced
Grealish & Barkley & chums were panting their way back towards the box we
would have had another glorious goal to celebrate.

A joy to read Richard, and I was so pleased for Alioski and Bamford. We all
doubted them, but last night they were outstanding.

Costa was very average in the 1st half and although he improved in the 2nd,
it's a question of time before Raphinha starts there.

Dear All,

Earlier this week we heard of the sad death of one of the earliest members and
most loved characters from the list, David ā€œDRBā€ Brennan.
Not only was DRB a list regular in the 90s as a trawl through the archives held
by James Lundon proved but he also wrote a lot of good stuff.

As a season ticket-holder he used to go to reserve matches at The Shay and (as
well as Maggie Barber) post regular reports of the reservesā€™
progress. He was a regular source of ticket information and became very
friendly with Mandy in the ticket office especially when trying to find out
what times cup matches would be played and what the ticket allocations would be.

DRB and his wife Kate were part of a gang that regularly met pre-match (he was
an Adolphi regular), he was at the MOALM and he was the man behind the
sponsored head shave at the first Euronet in 1996.

Like others on the list he was a Northern Soul boy, coming from Horsforth what
else would he be?

One of the friendliest, funniest and kindest blokes I have had the pleasure to
meet he will always be the example I would use of what the list is about.

DRB leaves behind, Kate and the two boys Sid and Bradley and we have been in
touch to send our sympathy. No date has been set for what will be a very small
family funeral but his brother-in-law suggests there might be a memorial
service in the future. The family has asked, if anyone wishes to, that
donations are made to MIND which is a charity DRB supported.

We checked with the family before we posted anything to the list and they were
happy for us to do this. As we get more information, we will pass this on but
in the meantime please enjoy the following post to the list from 1996, itā€™s
typical of the DRB we knew and loved (that and the bloody song he wrote about
Tomas Brolin!)

RIP DRB.

Interviewer: Mr Wilkinson, as your team selection for some games over the past
few months has been, shall we say, "innovative" what will be your policy for
the Port Vale game?

HW: Well, all things considered, and bearing in mind that our players have had
a hectic autograph signing session recently, and it will be a bit chilly, I
think 11 players will suffice.

Interviewer: Mr Wilkinson, does this mean that even though your African players
are back from international duty, you will not use them?

HW: All things being equal, Tony, Phil and Lucas are definitely players, and
players want to play, want to play, but there can only be so many players, who
play, so they may play a part in playing but it's not so warm for players who
normally play, normally play, in a warmer climate.

Interviewer: It was suggested that in the Aston Villa game, you may have been
better playing an attacking side, as the defence, containing so many
youngsters, was unlikely to keep Villa out, offence being the best sort of
defence.

HW: Youngsters, youngsters. I was young once, and wanted to play, wanted to
play. You've got to give them a goal, I mean go, they may be short of pace,
but Rob Bowman has got the same name as the Producer of the X Files, so who
knows what might happen, might happen. I picked the best side for the game,
for the game. When I start telling you where to use a metaphor instead of a
simile, and when to employ onomatopoeic licence, then you can tell me how to
pick and quarter of pick and mix, I mean a football team.

Interviewer: There has been much discussion about Tomas Brolin's future at
Elland Road. Can you enlighten us as to the current situation?

HW: Tomas has got a white shirt, some people might say, might say, it still has
Parmalat on it, but I say Thistle Hotels. I know the shirts are the same
colour, and that was a major consideration in buying Tommy. I like continuity,
like buying players from Sheffield, so buying a player who was used to wearing

Hi all,

Had a peruse of Soccerstats this morning - and unless I was looking at it wrong
- comparing this point of the season vs last year we've played a game less (16
vs 17) and have a point more.

W9 D4 L3 so far vs W8 D6 L3 as at Nov 10th.

1pt more and a game less - not bad, not bad at all.

It's all about getting to 89 of course.

I'm halfway through it and with some exceptions it's largely fluffy PR.

But it's fluffy PR on the club WE follow, therefore it's compulsive viewing.

So I finally finished the documentary this evening. It's very moving and I
would recommend it. A few observations:
- It's clearly not a completely independent production. While there are
controversial episodes covered (Bamford's feigning getting whacked against
Villa, Spygate, etc. etc.) there's very little new information revealed about
these. (For instance, a more "newsy" documentary might have interviewed the
intern/employee who actually did the spying against Derby.) Some important
episodes are completely omitted. (For example, there is absolutely no mention
of Jack Clarke's bizarre collapse on the bench at 'Boro, let alone an
explanation of what caused it, beyond the vague "virus" that the club belatedly
told us about.)
- The series does not go into great detail about most of the squad or the
backroom team. There's no mention of the under-23s winning the national
championship, no real discussion of Carlos Corberan, Jack Clarke, Jamie
Shackleton, etc.
- It's a brilliant portrayal of the human side of the club: players, management
and supporters. You'd need the proverbial heart of stone not to be affected by
the scenes of the players and backroom staff in tears after the last Derby
game. In particular, I came away with new respect for Kalvin Phillips, Liam
Cooper, Marcelo Bielsa, Victor Orta, Angus Kinnear and Andrea Radrizzani. One
can criticize various personnel decisions that Orta made, particularly in his
first season, but watching him crying after the Derby game, one can't question
his commitment. That guy cares.
Also, the scenes with Bob Tappin made it worth the price (okay, it was free
with Amazon Prime) on their own.
Anyway, I came away feeling even more proud to be a Leeds United supporter,
which I didn't think was possible after all these years.
Cheers!
Sean

Hi all,

He might write very well, he might be a Leeds fan, he might be writing
something nice about LUFC - but Henry Winter's articles are to be avoided. He's
a sanctimonious peddler of i-told-you-so guff and he rarely actually reveals or
investigates anything new.

Regardless of club or player, he's there buttering up someone/something when
they're on the way up - almost as if the respective player/club hired him to do
good PR. Then he's the first to knock them down when things take a downward
turn, listing their faults in the past, the same ones he omitted to mention
when he was buttering them up in the first place. See his pre-tournament
England squad coverage.

When the Bielsa adventure ends, he'll be there wanging on about Bielsagate, his
being set in his ways, uncommunicative etc. Speaking of which, when Bielsagate
broke Twitter he let himself in for well deserved stick with his proclamations
about not-the-done-thing-here there etc and being reminded that he freely spied
upon the England national team and printed what he saw the very next day.

Give me David Conn any day of the week.

The Premier League needs Leeds United. It needs the mystique of Marcelo Bielsa,
a manager so beloved by Leeds fans that two of them are in a recording studio
working on Bucket Man as a musical tribute to his match-day seat of choice. It
needs Bielsaā€™s intense, imaginative football. It particularly needs the passion
of the Leeds faithful.

There are some great travelling supports in the Premier League, such as
Manchester United and Newcastle United, among others, and Leeds would be a
welcome addition on the road as well as with the atmosphere that they generate
at Elland Road. After Leeds played away to Preston North End on April 9, the
police officer in charge of the away section at Deepdale praised the 5,516
visiting fans for being ā€œas loud as ever and no issues, no arrestsā€.

Leeds fans would represent an antidote to some of the ills besetting the
Premier League. They are the opposite of the glory-hunters swooning because of
a clubā€™s prominence. Leeds fans might consider a half-and-half scarf if
stitching together Leeds United and the Kaizer Chiefs, Lucas Radebeā€™s old team.
They are the antithesis of what Roy Keane famously termed the ā€œprawn-sandwich
brigadeā€. If somebody mentioned opening a tunnel club at Elland Road, the ready
wits on their terraces would suggest that it was probably an escape route after
15 yearsā€™ incarceration in the EFL.

Supporting Leeds is a passion passed on from generation to generation. When
they played Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, there were children too young to
remember the Premiership years leaning excitedly over the yellow and blue
railings almost two hours before kick-off at Elland Road, high-fiving Bielsa
and his players as they marched from the bus.

Three hours later, a fan called Matt Richardson celebrated Jack Harrisonā€™s
winner so enthusiastically that he broke his ankle. A friend of his took a
picture of Richardson in his seat afterwards, smiling, his left foot at a
painful angle, continuing to watching Leeds before the medics arrived. As he
was helped into a wheelchair, Richardson kept an eye on the game while doing a
thumbs up to his mates, who took great delight when he was strapped in by
shouting: ā€œSeatbelt onā€.

Richardson later tweeted from hospital that ā€œthis is what supporting Leeds
United does to meā€ . . . ā€œbut idc [I donā€™t care] because Leeds wonā€. Victory
took Leeds to 82 points, four behind the leaders Norwich City and three ahead
of Sheffield United with four games to play in the compelling race for the two
automatic promotion positions.

Leeds know they still have major work to complete. They also know how much they
want it. If Leeds do go up, the city will acquire even more of a buzz, there
will be more students switching there, and there will be smiles among
broadcasters, knowing that noise is guaranteed at Elland Road.

After Leeds were relegated from the Premiership after a 4-1 thumping by Bolton
Wanderers on May 2, 2004, their then caretaker-manager Eddie Gray remarked
defiantly: ā€œIt will not be the end of the club.ā€ No chance. Not with thousands
of Leeds fans singing louder and louder in trying to lift vanquished players,
including one of their own, Alan Smith, who was in tears. And this is why Leeds
United survived. The fans. And that is why 13 days later, as the

The translation by Salim is excellent. Note that Bielsa not only speaks
Argentinian Spanish, it's usually very technical (from a football point of

I listened to pieces of what MB said - and there's little or nothing I'd have

As far as I know , Lamrani does no translating during the match and sits
with the injured players (Berardi, Dallas, Brownm, etc)
In fact, there are vides of him celebrating with the non-players during the
match (Alioski vs Forest)

During the match Corbaran appears to do all Bielsa's translating.

Finn and I watched the Rotherham game in hospital together and he was very
pleased with our performance.

I am sure that he will think that us winning the league is just one of those
things that happens routinely - which is how I felt in 1992. I am so
re-invigorated with Bielsa that I have bought an android box so that I dont
have to miss any games this season from Perth - if they are not on that then
they can be streamed on the leeds website. I have also spent an unreasonable

Re: [LU] Tippy Tappy

2018-07-02 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Hiya,

unquestionably Spain were flippin' dire yesterday. Quite how none of them
caught on themselves that they needed to go long, use the wings or run at them
is beyond us all.

However, a comparison with City though can't be made, nor is it fair to tie
fully Spain's way of playing with Guardiola - in fact, Guardiola has moved on,
but Spain hasn't.

In any case, Spain's style precedes Guardiola somewhat. Spain won Euro 2008
with Luis Aragones (Pep became FCB manager in 2008) so they were already
playing possession football - but they had runners: Torres (yes, he did run),
Villa and Pedro. This Spain put on the runners ONLY at the end to complement
Costa with Aspas & Moreno - but by then it was too late.

The Pep comparison is also irrelevant as Man City do not play against teams who
in a nutshell refuse to play. There's not one EPL team that would dare to play
for a 0-0 draw - their own fans would boo them off the pitch and the coach
would be sacked in a question of weeks.

In the WC it's of paramount importance to NOT lose your 1st game, and given
that there's only 3 x group games, shutting-up-shop and playing for a draw is
commonplace against the top seed. Thus Spain (and most #1 seeds) end up
playing against blanket defences resulting in awful tedious games until they
get more equal opposition in the knockout stage and they can play (see France).

I can't remember the last team to take it to Spain properly - probably Holland
4 years ago - but all my excuses above are just that - they got it badly wrong.

Anyhow, enough of my homily - not hard to see I'm a bit biased!!

Much of what you say I agree with. On Spain however, the sheer lack of
willingness to probe was what lead to their elimination. Teams have always
parked the bus, and whilst it can be as boring as hell, it is not their job to
help Spain beat them. Man City employ a variety of the type of football Spain
could have employed - possesion based but with a cutting edge, and hard
pressing to get back any lost ball. They could have played Costa + 1 up front,
but they didn't. And, when push came to shove, they took some really poor
penalties. That is genuinely surprising given their pass accuracy rate, but of
course most of that is along their back line with no pressure. I would just
have liked them to have really had a go - they could have won the thing!

Great World Cup? Well, clearly a personal view. Refs have been good to very
good, VAR usually a positive, stadia look great, no reports of bad stuff going
on (aside from the ticket touting for England's game tomorrow in particular).
But are there teams you can't wait to watch, who you know will provide real
entertainment as well as having footballing ability? Less sure about that.
Uruguay look the real deal - great defending, but committed attacking too
(Suarez was outstanding v Portugal); England might be right up there, but
there's been plenty of play-safe rubbish.

Hi all,

provoked into a semi-defence of Spain

Their way of playing - possession football on the ground - remains the best
quality football over the last decade. Both RM & FCB play this way, it's a joy
to watch, has been a joy to watch now for years and you only need to look at
their European trophies these last 10 years.

RM's midfield has the likes of Modric, Isco and Kroos, FCB have Coutinho,
Rakitic and Messi - and none of them know how to tackle because they don't have
to with possession football.

(Note also that RM haven't really spent that much money recently - their last
splurge was 3 years ago, although I suspect that's about to change.)

Spain's abysmal failure is due to:

Re: [LU] Tippy Tappy

2018-07-02 Thread Brendan McWilliams

Hi all,

provoked into a semi-defence of Spain

- their players and style being so good that every single frickin' team that
plays them now has already given up before they start. They park the bus (and
then some) and go for a 0-0 draw. Russia in particular yesterday, Iran before
them. Even Portugal sat back. Saying Spain are boring, yet overlooking the
opposition is plain silly. When Mou's teams do nothing and shut up shop, the
other team are accused of being dull?

- half the team being from a club team that has Ronaldo, the other half a club
team that has Messi. So these guys are all waiting around for a spark of genius
that isn't coming, then it's just giving it to someone else hoping they'll have
that creativity. Xavi was able to do it, Isco is nearly there, but otherwise
they're all passing around hoping for something to happen. You could say the
same for Germany too - all waiting for a killer pass or touch of magic that
never came.

- So, if it's playing against 9 or 10 defenders and you can't dribble through
THAT many or thread a pass through minimal space, then the only options are
crosses from the wings or long balls from deep. Whilst Hierro played Costa up
front, nobody played off him (like what Griezmann does in ATM) and so he's
totally isolated and looks like a lemon but when used right, he's outstanding.
No wingers: yesterday they had Asensio (not a winger really), Isco went into
the middle and Silva is brilliant but not a winger either.

All this BS about tiki-taka being dull etc - what do you do if the other team
doesn't want to play? You give them the ball? They usually don't even want the
ball as they'll just lose it going forward, then get caught. In short, Spain
should have went longer with speed - but they didn't and another tournament
wasted.

As to weather this is a great WC or not - yes it is.

So few teams play by lamping the ball up by default, all are playing on the
ground, the refs have been mostly outstanding, numerous games decided in the
last 10mins and yes, VAR has been a good addition. The lack of "stars" you
have to put down to the fact that there are so few very bad teams any more and
it's a more equal tournament (compared to others). All the stars before shone
because they were basically playing against traffic cones.

Also, who can remember Euro 92, Euro 96 (the other games), about half of Italia
90, quite a lot of WC2010 (Algeria vs England anyone?) they were
absolutely dire. Best WC in recent times for me was WC2006 when a young Germany
came through under Klinsmann playing amazing football.

Firstly, I hadn't heard about Brian Mac - absolutely the right decision,
despite all that has been achieved. The sheer bloody mindedness he's shown
recently, at least publicly, in refusing to accept there were problems was
ludicrous. The Rhinos need a serious overhaul, so should be very interesting!
Re the WC, yep, some of the European teams have been the worst for negativity.
I'd hoped Senegal might qualify as I liked their gung-ho approach, but look
where that got them? Mind you, the sheer amateurism of teams like Tunisia,
Saudi Arabia when defending has been pitiful. God knows how poor the comp will
be by the American one as they're increasing the number to 48!! They might make
loads of money, but some of the games will be pointless!
Now, come on Mexico

Definitely not the best ever in terms of quality of football. But in terms of
entertainment? Sure - it took until yesterday's turgid few hours of dullness to
remind me what the World Cup was usually like, especially in the knock-out
stages.

Thankfully, there's only on more all-European tie left in this round, because
that's where the fun usually drains away.

Maybe the delay shows that all sides are serious, but want to get things right.
It seems that his renumeration package is not an issue, but more the
contractual terms around what he's in control of.

I'm still not 100% convinced he is the "one". I think his lack of English is
going to be an issue. People point to Pottetchino as an example of successful
non English speakers. Correct but there are loads more examples (Puel a very
recent one) when it may have been a factor in their failure. Plus Bielsa is a
very different kettle of fish, he old at 62 as well. His last 2 jobs have
blown up and that was with better squads in the countries top leagues.

How are many of our players going to learn a new system in a foreign language
in a few weeks? Even if we buy 5 or 6 new first teamers, that's even more
issues of integration.

I've read lots of admiring articles about his tactic's but hey all also mention
a very fiery temperament and I'm not sure that is what's needed.

Is there anyone 100% convinced of this appointment who can calm me down?

I think the lists' confusion lies in the fact that you mentioned "searching

I/We may have missed something or perhaps something was posted off list -

saved from the fallout.

Personally I'd prefer to have you both on the list as I'd miss the excitement!!

I know both have been guilty in the past, but what got me last night was that,
as far as I could see, there was absolutely no provocation from Rob Heath and
yet Dr. Benjamin came steaming straight in with literally insane ranting.

Looked to me like Mike misread a post from someone else as coming from Rob. In
that case I feel Rob deserves an apology.

Dave,

So sorry to hear that - the death of a child is such a life changing event, and

Subject: [LU] totally non LU - scum of the earth

This post is nothing at all to do with LUFC or football but I am so angry and
upset I just need to vent a bit - so feel free to delete without reading
My 6 year old neice, Lexi, died last year after a long and painful terminal
illness. As you can imagine that is pretty upsetting and even more so for her
mum (Emma) Dad and siblings
Anyway I got home from a great night at cubs tonight to find my wife a bit upset
Emma had been to Lexis grave and caught a lad and his mates (they got away)
destroying the grave, they have smashed the ornaments, broken flowers and even
worse broken a small pink money box into which her 10 year old sister Ellie
puts one pence each time she visits, and they nicked the money - all 88pence of
it.
Somehow Emma restrained both herself and the kid concerned - how she did not
batter him I am not sure, till police came
The kid is 11 and his mates the same age - police put him back of the van and
tried to put the fear of god up him - the kid was hysterical, they said they
would do what they could but given his age etc
Emma is heartbroken as you can imagine - the cross has been ripped from the
grave and everything trashed - and wants to 'dig Lexi up and bring her home'
I know there is nothing anyone can say or do but I am so angry and upset words
fail me and I just needed to vent a bit
It makes you despair for humanity - they are old enough to know and understand
what they were doing for 'fun' and that it was so obviously the grave of a
little girl
Myself and my wife are going to shops tomorrow and will buy what we can to
replace the broken stuff but it will not be the same
Sorry to put this on any of you (if you have read this far)
Like I say scum of the earth

Not really a fan of Tennis but I always support Andy Murray, precisely because
he's Scottish, and always wanted Henman to win.

Clearly lots of English have taken against Murray for his _possibly_ wanting
Scottish independence.

However I want Federer to win every match as he's been the most stylish and
graceful player I can remember.

PS I reserve my anyone-but-the-english primarily for the soccer and in
particular the rugby.

Re: [LU] (Only very slightly LU) Shameless plug

2017-02-28 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Congratulations Rob - writing a book is impressive enough, getting someone to
take a punt on it and publish, that's really impressive.

That must be 3 published authors on the list - Dr Mike, Chris, and now Rob?

Re: [LU] Monk charged? Outrageous.

2017-02-08 Thread Brendan Osborne
Agreed that Gary stepped out of his technical area and he will probably get a
ban. Wagner has been charged on two counts however - the encroachment on the
pitch to celebrate the goal and the subsequent loss of control. Hopefully his
ban will be double whatever is doled out to Monk.

Whatever his motives, Monks actions, and what followed thereafter, did show a
massive spirit and unity between players and management, and I think will only
serve to galvanise that spirit, which is probably the only positive here.

I think Monk deserves the ban. He started it. Wagner's celebration was wanky
but he didn't run into Gary's technical area and was not gesturing to him or
shouting the score.
I think Monk is a bit of a twat.

Yeah me too, BUT we don't have thousands of cameras pointing at us. I think it
was a mistake in the heat of the moment on his part and he'll get a ban.

Good to see HT have banned the lowlife with the flag, although the cheering
Neanderthals prancing around it seem to have got off.

If you watch the footage that some Udder made from the stand, you can see that
Monk simply strolled casually into Wanger's path as the latter galumphed back
up the pitch after his outrageous pitch invasion. Monk made exactly the same
move that I make 10 times a day here in Hong Kong when I see people walking
along with their heads stuck in their mobiles...nothing more.

Re: [LU] Midfield

2017-01-29 Thread Brendan Osborne
I think he picked a team to blood a few youngsters with the hope that they
would win and if it was a draw, I suspect he'd have played the same team in the
replay. I don't think winning the FA cup is a realistic target for us,
nevertheless I did want us to win and progress, and losing to Sutton is
embarrassing.

Based on the team he picked, I have to imagine that Monk wasn't too arsed if we
lost though.

He took 100% responsibility in the after match interview, so maybe he should
buy those tickets!!

Brilliant I thought, the game will be off, result
I am unable to go, thanks to sky and their Friday night football nonsense, got
a 'family do' that I can't get out of !
Was gutted when I saw the weather forecast for Leeds is actually all day
sunshine on Friday !
Is it wrong and selfish to want the game postponed just because I cannot go

Re: [LU] Liverpool 2 Leeds 0

2016-12-01 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Hi all,

from my armchair in foreign climes:

- Silvestri should have came out, and when he does come out take everything
with him as a proper keeper should. The fact is he lacks a pair so hard to say
if he's a better option than Green, Green by a whisker probably.

- Sacko has got worse as the season has gone on,

- sorry, Doukara is still terrible even with renewed desire these days,

- i can't for the life of me understand the abuse Wood gets. I mean, if he got
those goals AND did the rest, he wouldn't still be with us now would he?

- but no matter how limited Wood is, he's light years ahead of Becchio, he got
the odd goal but he was shockingly bad.

- my man Eunan I expect to shine with Bridcutt alongside him, he's been
inconsistent...

The squad loanees are: Hernandez, Bartley, Jannsoon (automatic purchase on 20
appearances), Grimes and Sacko right?

Stating the bleeding obvious but of that lot: Bartley & Jansson obviously,
question mark over Hernandez, and so far a no for Grimes and Sacko.

Regards,

BMW

I said the first time I saw him preseason at Peterborough, Sacko is Carton
Palmer on Red Bull. He has a worse first touch than our old mate Becchio and
I haven't seen him hit the target once yet.
However in his defence he does work exceptionally hard when tracking back to
help his full back.

Wow - this is what football is all about, not the greatest game but when Vierra

their nonsense could not wipe the smile off my face"We're Leeds and we're proud

it - this was a team and performance to be proud ofThe ticket queues outside
the ground showed how good an idea the cheap tickets were, and all the open
stands were full (fair play to Norwich who sold 2k for this game - a great turn
out)I was disappointed as i worked out the team and realised that only Bartley
was a genuine first teamer, with Roofe and Vieira both playing recently due to
injury and for much of the first half, we looked to be a second string team,
hastily thrown together (when will managers realise Mowatt is NOT a winger and
certainly not a RIGHT sided one ?) as Norwich took the game to us and
threatened to run away with it, some desperate defending and some good saves
from Silvestri saving us from a hammering. Their goal when it came was well
worked and well deserved as they tore us apart and slotted homeWe did think we
had equalised but Bartley was booked for 'scoring' with his handSo 0 1 at half
time and a thrashing on the cards.
Second half we upped the tempo and got some fluidity going and got a real
foothold in the game. It was no surprise when we equalised Doukara doing well
and pulling the ball back to Antonsson who smashed home.We could and should
have won it but Mowatt could not get the right touch that would have put it
into an empty net, doukara also had a great header well saved. We put on Sakho
who caused them all sorts of problems and Wood who had a stormer.Unfortunately
we also brought on Philips which meant we had used all 3 subs so when Coyle
could not come out for extra time we were down to ten men! (The FA cup is
allowing 4 subs in this situation?)Our bottle had gone and we approached extra
time down to ten with the sole purpose of hanging on for pens, but this went
wrong as they beat our defence and headed home (looked offside from my seat and
Silvestri got booked for arguing)At that point I was expecting 4 1 and was
trying to work out if it was worth leaving if they scored again to make sure I
could get home. But this current lot are made of sterner stuff and Sakho broke
down the left and had a shot that the keeper could only parry to the feet of
the onrushing Chris Wood who hit home ( a typical centre forward goal -
brilliant stuff) and so to pensThankfully taken at our end
They scored and so did Wood, then they missed and Roofe hit home - 2 1 with us
with one in hand but Philips had his saved and then Grimes (poor throughout)
approached his - we were still in the driving seat but as with most left
footers at pens, it just did not look right and he blasted miles over. SO
suddenly it was 2 2 and the momentum seemed to have shifted, but Silvestri
saved and it was left to Ronaldo Vieira to step up and striker the winning
penalty - pandemonium on the field and in the stands and a brilliant night came
to a close

We also have a history of punching above our weight against the top teams, and
being terrible against the smaller ones (any of this sounding familiar?), so
our group (Italy Belgium and Sweden) might be interesting. Don't expect us to
qualify, but there might be a shock or two nevertheless!

Looking forward to having the choice of watching live matches on TV for the

[LU] New Shirt Sponsor

2016-05-12 Thread Brendan Osborne
32 RED announced as new shirt sponsor - 3 year deal.

http://www.leedsunited.com/news/article/noyxd5aejlkb1pvlojcyix7xq/title/united-announce-new-shirt-sponsor

We'll probably use this money to pay the fine from the previous sponsor ;-)

Re: [LU] NonLU: Radiohead

2016-05-12 Thread Brendan McWilliams
I thought "OK Computer" and "The Bends" were not for me upon early listenings,
then slowly but surely it sinks into the point that nearly 20 years later
OK Computer is still for me my favourite album. Then again, I've fallen off the
musical map in recent years so my judgement is way off these days.

Re: [LU] Hard Division next year

2016-05-12 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Hi,

the same thing is said every year: the three coming down from above and the
in-form recently promoted teams will be hard to handle etc. but it rarely makes
the division any more difficult.

I have full confidence in our ability to reach mid table mediocrity
irrespective of newcomers.

Of the three who come down from the Prem, typically one goes straight back up
automatically, one might make the Playoffs, one usually self combusts and has
serious problems (e.g. QPR, Wigan). OF those that come up from L1, as likely
as not one or two will go down.

15 year veteran here (2001) - so feel like a kid amongst all you elder

I remember my first post was in response to someone slagging off the club (can
you imagine??) and I was fairly indignant that we should all be behind the club
NO MATTER WHAT!! Funny how the next 15 years altered that!! :-)

Steve Gillen was the first one to respond to my post. I remember mentioning
that fact to his missus, when Steve was going through his illness in the last
18 months or so.

Re: [LU] Qpr

Agreed.

If it's any consolation - and I know already it isn't - the QPR crowd (around
where I was sitting) are just a disgruntled with their team as we are.

Two poor teams on the day to be honest. They reckoned that MK Dons and Preston
were the only 2 teams that they've played who were worse than Leeds!!

[LU] QPR away

2015-11-27 Thread Brendan Osborne
Well, I love it when a plan comes together - even better when no plan comes
together.

I'm based in Dublin but working in Luton this week and next - with some work to
be done over the weekend.

Yesterday, I was working in the clients (small) office where two lads were
having a meeting - the meeting ended and they started talking football. Turns
out, one of the guys is a QPR fan. I told him who I supported, and without
prompting, he offered me a ticket (albeit in the Home end).

So spare a thought for me tomorrow - I'll have to applaud gracefully when Wood
gets his hat-trick!! :-)

[LU] The story so far....

2015-03-18 Thread Brendan Osborne
Having been battered by Fulham for most of first half (Silvestri playing like
he did against Middlesboro) we finally opened the scoring on 40 minutes with a
downward header from Byram.

Sol Bamba scored his first goal for Leeds early in the 2nd half and Fulham
shortly after are reduced to 10 men when Stafylidis was sent off.

Apparently we haven't beaten Fulham at Craven Cottage for 30 years!

Re: [LU] 1 - 0 Sharp

2015-03-01 Thread Brendan
in fact the more I think about it, the more I see that whilst one of the
three who drop down will go back up the next season, the other two usually have
to suffer a complete financial meltdown that was brought about by the Prem
salaries, with the day of reckoning then arriving finally after relegation.

Look at Blackpool, Bolton, Wigan, Portsmouth, Birmingham, Charlton... Cardiff
are almost certainly stacked up high with internal loans.

Derby, Reading, Wolves, Blackburn were all relegated in the last six or seven
years - only Derby under McClaren are now back in shape.

Anyhow my overall point I suppose is that those teams in from the Premier have
in most cases minimal advantage: the parachute payments are spent before they
even get them and they are all in various stages of pandemonium when the
Championship begins.

Anyhow, after the recent purge of the Warnock era deadwood, who's left? Austin
has until the end of the season, what about the Morison goal machine, and Andy
White?

Yeah, look at the top half of the table Only Norwich have been in the premier
in the last couple of years. Actually what has happened is that more and more
teams are rising to the top of the championship and while it is true that once
there it is hard to stay up there, I'm not sure our chances of going up are any
worse than in the last few years. The key is going to be consistency, keeping
as many of the youth as poss, BUT adding to the team some experience, hoped
that the likes of Bamba and Sharp might be that experience but after the last
couple of performances I'm not so sure, oh for a Gordon Strachan!

Hi Dave,

Not sure if that's a given.

Glancing at the end of season Premier table from the last few years, typically
one of the relegated three go back up and the other two will have spent/bet the
parachute money in trying to stay up beforehand.

Looking at this year's Prem relegation candidates:
- QPR have a Ā£40m fine waiting for them.
- Villa are big but have no money
- Burnley, well run, but who wants to go to Burnley?

All of them who go down have to build entire new teams and we know from this
season how hit and miss that is.

Even worse are our long term prospects. I do not generally bother with the Prem
but whilst in the pub the League table came on. Looking at the bottom 4 -
Leicester, Burnley and QPR have all walked away with our Division in recent
years and look well equipped to bounce right back again. The other likely
contenders for relegation are Villa and whilst I know little about them, they
are a good sized club so their crowds plus parachute money will stop them doing
a Wigan or Blackpool and dropping down the Divisions. So next season we will be
up against the likes of these from the Prem plus whoever does not go up - say
Watford, Ipswich etc. This means our chances of anything better than a play off
place (where our record is abysmal) are very slim indeed. Yet to have any
chance at all we need to convince Byram and Mowatt to stay for a third season,
and Cook for a second one in the face of Premier teams trying to take them away
for double or even triple the money they can get at ER. Taylor will be in the
same boat of he continues to impressOur only hope as things stand is to keep
all these home grown youngsters and add enough quality to make it all work.So
for me, unless something drastic happens we are in trouble long term. IF the TV
money in the Prem continues as it is then we will in effect have a 22 team
Premier League with 19 actually playing in the Premier League and 3 temporarily
in the Championship and swapping with 3 more at the end of each season. The only
'drastic' things that could happen are either Sky and football going bust - the
talk of there soon being a Ā£1m per week footballer is already out there- or us
attracting someone with real cash that they will pump into the club. Hopefully
Cellino has put us in a better and just as importantly clearer, financial
position so that someone may just be tempted, pour Ā£10 or Ā£15m into the club
and then recoup that and more when we go up. Both these seem unlikley at present

Yep, Phil Hay & Adam Pope - mandatory following for reliable LUFC news.

I love Twitter, never tweet but follow things I'm interested in and creates my
own personal news feed.

For example I follow Phil hay and Adam Pope and have the notifications turned
on so I immediately get alerted to tweets... Been pretty useful with the
changes in manager and the like. Also Phil hay is great for in game updates.

Also follow things of political, local, work and humorous interest

As someone once said Facebook is look at me, Twitter is look at this

people to follow it's a great "resource". I rarely tweet, but on the whole
it's a big thumbs up from me.

PS I find the Mike vs Rob emails hilarious.

Likewise, I was an early adopter of both. Still have an active Facebook
account though my visits, to it grow fewer by the year.

As for Twitter, I never quite saw the use, probably because my thoughts and
opinions tend to be a little more verbose than allowed.

Why do you ask, Pete?

I don't really have a problem with Joey Barton, he's had a few scraps but
haven't we all...

Well I'm glad I opened up this topic for conversation!

How about we discuss a starting eleven of footballers who we'd never want
playing for Leeds because of something they did or said..
