[LU] List Musings.

2024-01-11 Thread ROGER goodair via Leedslist
Hi playmates,

Good reading over the last few days, and yes, I am very much still here, but
definitely a super lurker on the digest these days.

Someone mentioned BDTR - a subject not to be dwelled on too much I think. A
well intentioned, but ultimately unsuccessful business venture. Just thank your
lucky stars you weren't given the unenviable task of trying to flog the company
merchandise from a makeshift stall on Elland Road.

MOALM - still to this day one of the best weekends of my life, spoilt a tad by
a game of football. I would very much be up for Damian's suggestion of the
Grandchild of all list meets (GOALM), as I actually have one now. He's only 6
months old, but he already has his LUFC teddy bear, comforter, and sweatshirt
and leggings. His Father is a Cornishman, so quite naturally has no interest in
football whatsoever.

And yes, I'm still very much the scourge of ladies in sensible shoes,
particularly the latest craze in female footwear, Doc Martens; WTF is the world
coming to my friends!!

I could go on at length, but time is short and the pub's open.

Rogerre Michelle Goodair
PS: Rot in hell Herr Beckenbaur, you cheating bastard.

2022-10-29 Thread Roger Goodair via Leedslist
   Kev,
This is the part of our team that I just can't fathom. The defending at
times is absolutely shambolic. Okay, we have well documented
deficiencies in the full back positions (although Struik works his
gonads off trying to fill in at left back), but we have two
international standard centre backs at the club in Koch and Llorente.
Have they suddenly become bad player's because they've turned up at
Elland Road - answers on a postcard please?
On a more general note, I think we currently have a team that is mostly
filled with workhorses, who don't have the necessary quality, or level
of fitness (so much for MB's over training eh!) to be consistently
   competitive in the Premier League.

The list certainly spices up a bit when the team starts to struggle!
I'm not too sure what any manager could do with this squad.

To survive in the Premier League all teams need to be able to defend
 at
times and not give soft chances away.
Leeds have not been able to do that for many years.

We got away with it in the Championship and the first season in the
 PL
because the energy was so good.

The first 3 Bielsa years were unbelievable and tremendous, but I am
 slowly
coming round to the fact that to do the same in the Premier League
 with
budget players just is not sustainable.

Last year Everton gave away a lot of soft goals, but stiffening the
 defence
has turned them round. They at least stay in games for a long
 while.
Leeds can dominate possession but still get well-beaten.

One assumes that Marsch will get sacked sometime soon. I'm not sure
 who
can come in and sort out the defending, plus get the team scoring
 again.
Whoever it is will need to sign 5 players in January and do what
 Newcastle
did last year. Even if the money is made available (having spent
 net zero
in the last 2 windows) are the clowns who conduct our transfers
 capable of
 getting deals over the line?
The only benefit this season is that there will be a lot more games
 during
 and after the January window.

 As for today:
Will it be the usual kamikaze-ball or will Marsch try to keep it
 tight?
The former could end up with a similar result to last season, but
 can you
really see this group keeping Liverpool out for 20 mins, let alone
 75-80 to
give us a chance of getting something?

And while I'm here - I know Alioski isn't a left back (and we need a

 (Sorry to drone on..)

This longterm approach, I think, also explains why Bielsa so rarely
 drops a
player. He knows that any given player may have a dip in form, but
 he
believes that player is the best we have at any given time so he
 keeps
picking them. And guess whatit works! If you listen to
interviews with players, the common thread - Bamford, Ayling,
Harrison...- is that when asked how they have gone from Ch/ship
plonkers to PL stars they say "the manager showed confidence in me."

I know Bielsa took Struijk off after 20 mins v Villa, but that was
 just to
protect him after a yellow card, knowing what diving cheats Villa
 and esp
Grealish are. By putting him straight back in there as soon as
 Kalvin was
injured shows him that Bielsa has confidence in him.

Which is a great policyexcept when it comes to Alioski!

That was truly dreadful. Casilla reminding people quite how bad he
 is.
Thought this might be a chance for Costa to put in a bit of a
performance and push for a first team place but no, he was
 anonymous.
I think it's always tough on the u23s to chick them into a
disjointed team, but Casey looked awful. Jenkins didn't look great
either but probably fairer to judge him in a more balanced team.
Disappointed with Phillips, he just strolled through the game,
Hernandez's passing was way off, especially second half and I don't
think any of the subs did much when they came on.
I know the league is the priority but I was expecting better than
 that today.
Let's hope this doesn't derail our season like some abject cup
 performances have in the past.

I'm not wasting too much time writing about this match. For me 2
 things:
 1) worst result in the club's history
 2) worst half-time substitution I've seen from a manager (any team)

[LU] 64/65 & 90/91

2020-09-12 Thread Roger Goodair via Leedslist
Our early games record after going up is quite good I believe.
64/65 - 3 straight wins including a 4-2 Home defeat of the then
   champions Liverpool!!
90/91 - 2 wins and a draw including opening day win at Everton.
Don't despair before a ball is kicked folks.
Kev - we won't be short of a centre back if we get the kid from Zagreb,
who must be some player if he is worth a million for every year of his
very short life! I doubt we'll be paying that much money to stick him

[LU] DRB - MOALM

2020-06-28 Thread ROGER goodair via Leedslist
What a wonderful account from DRB, of the MOALM weekend - the boy could
certainly tell a tale. Still to this day, one of the best weekends of my life,
spoiled only by a game of football, where our beloved team was well and truly
mullered - many thanks for the tactical genius on that day Sgt Wilko! That
weekend was also my first encounter with a certain "Betty" Boocock; the rest on
that one as they say, is history.

If DRB was leading the case for the prosecution, for events that took place
over that weekend, I plead guilty to all charges Your Honour, and a few more
besides. As for chatting up the pub landlady, I offer the following in
mitigation; I was only in my mid-thirties at the time, and many a good tune and
all that!

RIP DRB - top lad.

[LU] Villa

2019-05-12 Thread Roger Goodair via Leedslist
Mr Pilling, may I salute you for your synopsis of the Villa v WBA game,
but you missed an undeniably moment of sporting behaviour when Smith
(who I get to dislike more as each week passes) tried to get Gayle sent
off in the first half! Ref was truly awful - how the fuck was Gayle
supposed to avoid that collision with the keeper when he was making a
   genuine challenge for the ball?
Villa (their players and manager) are an absolute disgrace in my
opinion. Their diving and feigning of injury would put most Italian
teams to shame in that department.
As for our beloved mighty whites, totally dominant for much of the
game, but same old same old and very little end product. Great
performances by the vast majority of the team IMO.
I stopped trying to second guess MB months ago, but I suggest last
night would make it very difficult for him to drop Dallas, Berardi,
Shackleton or Roofe for the 2nd leg.
I still expect a nerve shredding night on Wednesday - 1.45 a.m kick off

[LU] FA Cup

2019-01-07 Thread Roger Goodair via Leedslist
Back in my boyhood and youth the FA Cup final was the biggest game of
the season for any player to play in - only one team played in the
European cup, so for the rest of the teams it was the biggest cup
competition in Christendom. A certain Mr Stiles who won a world cup and
a European cup, still has it as the biggest regret in his career (and
we stopped it twice) that he didn't play in an FA Cup final.
I'm totally pissed off with the majority of teams in the top two
divisions (Us included for many seasons now) who take the piss and
totally disrespect the original and greatest cup competition in the
   world.
I'll give the FA an extremely simple solution that will make managers
and players, once again go though brick walls to win this trophy.
Champions league qualification to the top three only and the fourth
place to the FA Cup winners - simples.

I'm with Simon M 100% and Rich with regard to the lack of a plan B.
We need to sign a new a new keeper NOW. This young man (he's not a
young kid so let's stop making excuses for him) is going to cost us
promotion. A good keeper gains you as many points as a good striker and
BPF has already cost us many points this season. AGE ALERT - Sprake was
in the team at 16 and was a better keeper than BPF with one arm tied
behind his back!! As Simon M also said we need another centre back and
another striker - even if Bamford does come back very shortly. I note
that Eddie Howe is about to release Defoe - he'll do for me on a short
   term contract.
I know it appears to be very churlish of me to criticise MB, but I'm
gonna do anyway - absolutely no plan B other than to bring Clarke on,
who to be fair changed the game yet again for 20 minutes. Down to 10
men and we've worked our way back in to the game and even got a 2-1
lead. Call me old fashioned if you must (and I know you will!) but
what's wrong with closing a game out these days? Make some subs and
stick 4 or 5 at the back and kill the game against a shite forest team.
Anyone remember 0-0 at the bridge when we only had 9 men?! AGE ALERT -
The Don will be turning in his casket at throwing 3 points away there
   yesterday.
   Back to lurkdom in pattaya.
   Cheers - Rogerre

[LU] Preston - NW "Captain's" Corner

2018-09-20 Thread ROGER goodair
I was also on a rare visit to SOTG with Bradford LUSC on Tuesday evening, and
likewise was in the NW corner.

I had a great seat/superb view, but as you say it all felt pretty flat for some
reason. I chose to stay in the bar for the second half, where the atmosphere
was considerably better!!

BTW, after the first ten minutes we totally dominated the game and should have
gubbed them by at least 6 or 7. Two great finishes by Roberts, but the lad
should have had 4 or 5.

As the German coach of the time put it after their semi final defeat in

Far too many managers in football are more focused on preventing the opposition
from winning rather than figuring out how their own team can win. It takes far
less coaching and managing ability to do this. Currently Mr. Evans is falling
into this limited category.
No wonder the starting team is filled with "track-backers", hard working
grafters and players with limited skill and almost no ability to create goal
scoring chances.
Hence players like Botoka sit rotting in the reserves.

SportsDevil mostly, but also Vdub, and more recently Phoenix TV, where the

I hear a lot of people use Zeus, but it doesn’t stream particularly well for me.

[LU] Lavatory Parade

2014-08-28 Thread Roger Goodair
Hi folks (comes out of lurk mode),

I was actually at the game last night, courtesy of my employer, who sponsored
the game; the free drinks and the three course meal were all fine but that ends
the good points for the evening!

Perhaps it's because I attend so infrequently these days, but I thought we were
absolutely woeful throughout last night. This team just can't even do the
basics; we didn't have one player on the park last night who could consistently
control the bloody football. As George Best might have said - the entire
Leeds United team can trap it further than I can kick it!!

It's saying something when their two central midfielders would absolutely walk
in to our team - Knott was the best player on the park by a country mile, yet
we don't have ANYONE at the club who is capable of playing like that.

It's going to be a very long (and painful) season boys and girls, with only one
possible outcome, unless someone sorts things out very very quickly.
