Re: [LU] The Story So Far

2024-02-04 Thread Tim Whelan via Leedslist
Apart from all that we also need Liverpool to win the league, as they
did in the last three seasons when we have been promoted to the top
division (in 1964, 1990 and 2020). That could happen.
That is of course the reason that it took so long for us to get promoted
back to the Premier League, as we had to wait for them to break their 30
spell of not winning the league.

Watching the EFL highligts last night it was deeply hilarious to see
Ipswich go 3-0 down in the manner they did, but I fear that Kieffer
Moore will be an excellent loan signing for them and get a few goals by
the end of the season.

Ipswich's defeat by Preston confirms that our principle barrier to
automatic promotion should be based on maintaining consistency in our
results, followed closely by squad fitness and only then by hoping
Southampton get deducted 10 points for er, being Southampton. Why do I
say this? Well mainly because our situation has always been in our own
hands. Think Wendies, Rotherham, Sunderland, etc etc..

As regards a cup run, half of me thinks "ah the magic of the cup" and
the other half thinks "it is adiversion from the real target". Mind you
the thought of winning the cup, staying in this rather lovely league and
laughing at Liverpool as we beat them at Wembley plus a trip round
Europe has it's merits.

One other thought, I feel our on field discipline is the best I have
ever seen (excluding the red card issues which seem to have been
resolved). If I had time I would look into this further. (Where are the
Stattos when we need them?)

In the past three years I have seen every Leeds match bar one from the
comfort of the armchair (thank you whoever dreamt up Amazon's Firestick)
and, although I miss being on Row W, the Adolphi and the fun of "Spadge
Tours" to Europe, at 70 I am happy with my lot. Me and my mate Brian
have had a lot of fun doing this much to the amusement of our fellow
villagers in the pub either before or after matches. They are mainly
Mags or Mackems and they provide us with lots of fun. I mean only
drawing four all with a big club like Luton. And what fun when they
played each other in the cup.

I digress. Anyway here's to a season which continues to keep my
attention firmly fixed on the league and a season where we remain
unbeaten at home.

One quirk is that all three goals in the first half were scored by
former Leeds academy players, including the kind contribution from Leif
Davis.

As well as having three different Dutchmen on the scoresheet.

Great win but not perfect as some are saying. We put ourselves under
loads of pressure early doors with the aimless passing across the back
and Meslier didn’t help with some really poor kicking straight into
touch. But once we got going we were good value and the 2nd half was the
best we’ve played this season as Ipswich never really had a kick and
ended up making multiple subs not to win the game but to protect players
for their game against Leicester on Boxing Day.The Piroe / Rutter 10/9
combination worked as it tends to do in home games where we have the
momentum - it’s away games that are sometimes the problem. Summerville
continues to look a threat every time he gets the ball and still in my
eyes is the most exciting talent playing British football in any league.
Big bids incoming ! Great pen as well.Piroe’s goal was top drawer even
if we were a bit lucky in the build up. Archie Gray looked like a right
back and he is starting to get more confident going forward. I remember
Ian Snodin converting to right back from central midfield and ended up
playing for England and would have had a lot more caps had he not got
injured. Who knows with Archie ? Although I think he’s got too much to
offer in midfield.Ipswich fans couldn’t sell their tickets and looked
like they realised that it might not be a stroll for them this season.
Leif Davis has been getting the plaudits this season as the best left
back in the division. I think not. He’s another left back who can’t
defend. Ok going forward but really suspect in defence. His own goal was
a highlight. The South Stand sang ‘you’ve seen Firpo now fuck off home’
which made me smile.

Bring on Preston
Meslier - 6. Nothing to do, kicking rubbish.
Gray - 8. Majestic
Spence - 8. Great attacking in first half. Unfortunately everytime he
got himself into a great position in the box his left foot cross let him
down.

Rodon - 8. Comfortable
Struijk - 8. Ditto
Ampadu - 8. Some great interceptions
Kamara - 7. Battling performance
Summerville- 9. Class
Piroe - 8. Much needed performance and top class goal with his wrong
foot

James - 7. Great first half an hour but his final ball remains poor.
Rutter - 9. Top performance- his vision / passing is fantastic and today
he battled like a no 9.

Subs - not sure Bamford touched the ball others didn’t do much
Happy Christmas !

Re: [LU] Swansea

2023-11-30 Thread Tim Whelan via Leedslist

Is it just me, or is anyone else getting tired of the fact that we
haven't hit a decent free kick all season? Certainly no goals direct
from free kicks, or even any that went remotely close or forced the
keeper to make a decent save. (There might have been one that floated
gently over the wall straight at the keeper, but I don't count that).
And I can't remember any goals coming from free kicks crossed into the
box.

When we got a free kick in a dangerous position early in the second half
last night I predicted that Summerville would step up and shoot straight
into the wall, but I was wrong. In fact, Piroe stepped up and put it
straight into the wall instead.

This is why I was sorry to see Sam Greenwood go out on loan, but I
suppose that being the best set piece taker available doesn't get you
selected if your all round game isn't quite good enough. (See also James
Ward-Prouse and England).

But the players who are still with us are a talented bunch, so surely
there must be at least one of them we could train up to become a free
kick specialist. Can't Daniel Farke just pick one and tell them to
practise?

Rant over.

Agree with all that especially Piroe who definitely had his
bestgame.Very commanding in an advanced midfield role and he got his
goal which backs up Farke's theory.
I think Sumerville is excellent and I agree that he could go right to
the top. I think he's got more 'in his locker' than Sterling ever had.
He's one of those rare players that you know something is going to
happen when it gets the ball. Eddie Gray had that ability but none many
do. I can't currently same the same about Rutter, but he does do things
that you don't often see on a football pitch especially at this level, I
think he just needs some consistency. He was awful at Rotherham.
I also think Swansea caused us a lot of problems in the first half
without testing the keeper much but they were lively and overall it was
a good win.
Bamford is trying way to hard but he looks fit and you just know he will
score goals if given the chance but at the moment you just can't drop
Piroe or Rutter.
I see Farke was talking about Ayling and his decision to exclude him
from the squad because of Gray and Spence's inclusion. Said it was one
of the hardest decisions he's had to make. Unfortunately, Ayling has
declined rapidly and everytime he plays now you can see his legs have
gone. I think Liam C is on the way as well.

As part of my 70th Birthday year celebrations (my family have insisted
it is a long drawn out affair - a bit like my life to be honest) I
started my celebrations in July when I was taken to the opera, since
then I have had a day at the races and next up is a trip to SOTG (also
as part of the thankgodthetransferwindowisclosed celebrations).
The choice of the Wendies was purely random but it means I get fed and

up to block L in the MNES. By about 6.00pm I hope to be in Whitelocks
before being whisked away back to the Land of the Sad Wartin' Geordies
(LOTSWG).
I haven't actually reached the actual birthday yet, but if I do it will
be a wonder after all the excitement of recent days. I will attempt my
first match report in over one million years if I get as far as Sunday
without a visit to the LGI or Jimmys.

P.S. I recommend the Opera at Covent Garden if only for the Coach and

The list certainly spices up a bit when the team starts to struggle!
I'm not too sure what any manager could do with this squad.

To survive in the Premier League all teams need to be able to defend
at

times and not give soft chances away.
Leeds have not been able to do that for many years.

We got away with it in the Championship and the first season in the
PL

because the energy was so good.

The first 3 Bielsa years were unbelievable and tremendous, but I am
slowly
coming round to the fact that to do the same in the Premier League
with

budget players just is not sustainable.

Last year Everton gave away a lot of soft goals, but stiffening the
defence has turned them round. They at least stay in games for a
long

while.
Leeds can dominate possession but still get well-beaten.

One assumes that Marsch will get sacked sometime soon. I'm not
sure who
can come in and sort out the defending, plus get the team scoring
again.
Whoever it is will need to sign 5 players in January and do what
Newcastle
did last year. Even if the money is made available (having spent
net zero
in the last 2 windows) are the clowns who conduct our transfers capable
of

getting deals over the line?
The only benefit this season is that there will be a lot more games
during

and after the January window.

As for today:
Will it be the usual kamikaze-ball or will Marsch try to keep it
tight?
The former could end up with a similar result to last season, but can
you
really see this group keeping Liverpool out for 20 mins, let alone 75-80
to

give us a chance of getting something?

Re: [LU] 6 -2

2022-08-01 Thread Tim Whelan via Leedslist

Just a couple of historic notes. From memory, I think Bridges suffered
his knee injury in the away game at Besitkas, not the home game when we
put six past them. And one home game slightly more recently than 2001
when we scored 6 at home was the 6-1 win over QPR in the 2004/5 season.

Trying to remember last time I saw us score 6 at home - probably
forgotten at least one, but last i recall was Besitkas in champions
league 2001 - thnk was when Bridges did his knee, so from that point if
view it was a good day.
Went for a beer in Manchester and my son, in his shirt was pleased to
get a Leeds salute from a lad at the bar, still great when that happens.
Train was delayed by 15 mins due to " overcrowding " love the railway
system.
Anyway got to Leeds in time to watch the Lionesses - plan was watch
first half then taxi to ER to watch second half in Fanzone. Plan worked
well till got to ER and saw the length of the queues to get in , so
sacked off watching Emgkand game to get in the ground. No idea why
queues were so bad - once you got to the turnstile it was easy enough,
just put your phone with ticket under the scanner - simple.
The line up was odd - as near the first team as possible ( with
Sinisterra injured) but the subs , klich excepted, were all kids, so we
knew the plan was for everyone to get the full 90.
Everything from here on must be read with the caveat that it was a pre
session friendly v quite poor opposition. Any comparison I make with ex
players is to give an idea of their style.
We looked good at times and all 4 of the new boys impressed in
different ways. Adam's looked neat and tidy Sort of Batty type, tidied
things up kept it simple, nothing flashy and will not shine on TV but
will live. A players player rather than fans favourite. Kristensen on
the other hand will be a cult hero - ended the game with a bandage round
his head after a bad clash of heads ( hope concussion protocols let him
play next week) he was Danny Mils , tough and uncompromising and went
rampaging up the wing to good effect but more power than finesse. Will
be a hit.
Roca looked to be the new Yorkshire Pirlo , sitting deep at times and
spraying passes around usually to good effect, looks a decent player.
Aaronson had a hand in 3 goals , sublime ball through to Bamford (
albeit defender should have cut it out) , good run and shot / cross
that Rod tapped in, and a nice free kick that Koch headed home. Likes to
run with the ball and was busy. Again could be decent,
Best bits of the game- Bamfords 2 goals- first he was put through with
time to think and finished well, he loved it. Second a proper poachers
goal right time right place.
Rodrigo- hat trick perhaps, one may be og, is this the turning point or
yet another false dawn ? Will need to repeat this to stop crowd getting
at him - still lots to prove
Bad bits - we need a left back and Struik is not a left back , he
offered nothing going forward in a system that relies on full backs
getting forward for width - a big worry
Even worse was our total inability to deal with balls over the top /
down the sides, both goals and 2 other chances came from simple long
balls down the channels- Wolves will be licking their lips.
So plenty of good stuff but some major worries too - we will know more
once the real football starts - but 6 goals should help confidence
We had the worst seats in the ground - I pity anyone who gets seats 125
and 126 in N11 row A - right by the entrance barriers, people constantly
walking past / standing in front of you, made worse yesterday by a
dickhead who insisted on standing there looking back at the crowd
singing the Neville incest song - nutter, was moved on 4 times by very
patient stewards but kept coming back

It won't yet be ‘all for nought’ if we go down today. We would still
have the parachute payments to give us a big advantage in the 2022/3
Championship season, which we wouldn't have had if we had never gone up.
We'd still have to come back up inside a two seasons max, but surely if
clubs like Norwich, Fulham and Bournemouth can do it we can. Can't we?

I know what you’re saying Dave, but I don’t agree that today will decide
how we remember Bielsa. It will decide whether it was ‘all for nought’.
The first 3 years brought us both brilliant football, and a sense of
pride in the way it was achieved: he showed that it was still possible
to do things the right way on and off the field. To me there was an
element of grace to it - not a word often associated with Leeds.
JM doesn’t bring that and whatever the results today (and it is a 38
game season) it is unfair to expect that from him. Staying up being the
natural / default desire of any team in our position, but without
massive change it will likely mean we will be in for another season like
this one…without our best players. Going down might give us a better
season to watch as a supporter.
To be honest though, what I’ll miss if we do go down is the joy not the
‘status’, and that has gone either way.

There is no point debating if he would have kept us up although one of
my concerns for today is the fact that Marsch only has one result that

I thought that for the free kick Meslier should have been standing in the
centre of the goal rather than over to the left. He was depending on the wall
to cover the right side of the goal, but against a free kick taker of
Ward-Prouse’s quality you can’t rely on that. As it was he got his fingertips
to the ball, so if his starting point had been a yard or so to the right he
could have made the save.

The worst case scenario is that we go down and that Newcastle are one of
our fellow relegatees. They would have the financial clout to rebuild
their squad during the summer and would almost certainly grab one of the
two automatic promotion slots in 2022/3, to leave only one for us to
fight for.

Are there 3 other teams worse than us in this league? I would say yes
(Norwich, Burnley, Newcastle, Watford), BUT what are Newcastle going to
look like from Jan onwards? A hell of a lot better I reckon, and I think
they will pull away. So, we have to do better than Norwich, Burnley and
Watford. Can we do it? Touch and go, and much depends on how and when
our

injured players return.
Even if we do go down, we have some level of financial muscle with the
parachute payments, but MB will have gone, and who will we have? Do we
promote an MB disciple, and try to get a dynasty going, or throw it all
away and start with another journeyman manager? My vote is the former.
May

not work, but I think it is worth the risk.

I make that the fifth successive FA Cup game in London or further south,
and of course the other four have all been defeats. Our last win in the

followed by embarrassment at Sutton in the next round. It's about time

Re: [LU] Liverpool

2021-09-13 Thread Tim Whelan via Leedslist

Unfortunately, it was correct that Liverpool's first goal did stand. As
it was pointed out to me while I was baying for a VAR intervention,
Salah was behind the ball when it was played across the face of the
goal, therefore not in an offside position.

As far as Roberts is concerned, his main contribution was to screw a
shot well wide from a decent position on the edge of the area. Normally
he sends the ball over the bar from that distance. Whenever he comes on
for Rodrigo it feels like a change for the sake of making a change, as
he's not good enough to offer anything different at this level.

Re Rich’s big question and can we play with 2 wingers and Rodrigo - the
answer is no! I like Rodrigo, good player, but he has neither the
tactical or defensive nouse to play that role, and I don’t think he’s
fit enough either. I too would have definitely had Shackleton on in his
place, and Klich too, although Llorente’s injury scuppered likely
substitutions.
I’m not going to talk much about Cooper, because we all know he gives it
all he’s got, but realistically he’s an ageing Championship-level
defender who keeps getting found out! The only real question is why does
Bielsa keep picking him knowing that in all probability the same thing
will happen? My main gripe, re the defence, is Ayling - I thought he was
heading downhill towards the end of last season - his positional sense
is poor, his blocking is patchy (another through his legs yesterday),
but it’s his passing from right-back which are constantly wayward that
put us under immediate pressure time and again, usually half way into
our own half. This needs to change. I would have Cody Drameh in at
right-back now. As for Aylings ‘chance’ - why didn’t he head it?
Hopefully the club will appeal Stuijk’s red card - terrible injury, but
it wasn’t a bad tackle, just really unlucky. I watched to frame by frame
- he won the ball, but when he turned to stand he did bring his full
body-weight down on Elliot’s ankle - totally accidental. The ref clearly
saw nothing wrong in it initially, but Klopp’s histrionics and the
severity of the injury got Struijk a red, which seems all wrong.
I thought Firpo did ok - he was up against Salah after all. I’m still
convinced their first goal shouldn’t have stood - both Salah and Mane
were offside when the ball came forward, gaining a clear advantage, then
Mane was off as Salah scored. Liverpools tactic of leaving forwards
goal-hanging and then playing the linesman really bugs me.
Finally, will Bielsa learn? He knows we cannot compete with the top 6,
yet sends the same tactics out on to the pitch whoever we’re playing. We
could, and probably should have lost by 6/7 goals - bollocks to playing
our own game, we need some pragmatism against world-class players!
Second finally - if Struijk and Llorente are out on Friday, I hope
Cresswell is used, and not Ayling at CB - that would be a big error!

I’ve not seen any replays, so I don’t know about the sending off. Live,
it looked like a clean challenge, but then we saw lots of the folk
around lad running away holding their hands to their mouths, and so knew
it was a bad injury.
I think in time Bielsa might want to switch Raphinha inside into a no.10
role, behind Bamford, with Harrison and James on the wings. But there
has to be better coherence between the full backs and the wingers.
Ayling has started the season at quite a low level, he seems to be
struggling…a lot of unforced errors. Cooper can’t be any more than a
squad player. Llorente is class, I hope the injury is not serious.
Firpo, I actually think had his best game for us yesterday…whether that
is good enough long term is another thing.
In midfield, I think Phillips was very good, but can’t do it alone.
Dallas was curiously absent - or the game passed him by. Oddly after an
invisible first half, Harrison was having a good 15 minutes when he was
taken off.
Don’t know what to do with Rodrigo, he has played a lot in that advanced
midfield role and is not a success there. He has done ok as a centre
forward, but he is not the same kind of forward as Bamford, and Bielsa
sees that Bamford brings more to his preferred style of play.
We continue to be grateful for having Meslier in goal. He is a future
star.

What we need are a couple of wins, to settle the nerves.
The atmosphere in the ground was bouncing.

Re: [LU] Crawley

2021-01-11 Thread Tim Whelan via Leedslist

I can think of two more recent managers who took the FA Cup seriously,
despite their many obvious faults otherwise.

Neil Warnock's finest 90 minutes as Leeds boss was the 2-1 fourth round
win over Spurs. We were then unlucky to get Man City away in the 5th
round, when there was plenty of dross still in the competition we could
have been drawn against instead.

And it's even worth mentioning Steve Evans, who got us past Rotherham
and Bolton in the first two rounds. We may have gone out at Watford in
the 5th round with an anaemic display, but at least we did so with
pretty much a full strength team.

That was truly dreadful. Casilla reminding people quite how bad

Thought this might be a chance for Costa to put in a bit of a
performance and push for a first team place but no, he was
  anonymous.
I think it's always tough on the u23s to chick them into a
disjointed team, but Casey looked awful. Jenkins didn't look
great

either but probably fairer to judge him in a more balanced team.
Disappointed with Phillips, he just strolled through the game,
Hernandez's passing was way off, especially second half and I
don't

think any of the subs did much when they came on.
I know the league is the priority but I was expecting better than
  that today.
Let's hope this doesn't derail our season like some abject cup

I claim the victory was caused by me. I joined the BBC text coverage at

Absolutely correct! Have a Blue Peter badge and go to the top of the class!
Peter Barnes came on as a sub for the last 15 minutes of England's famous 2-1
defeat in Norway that inspired the greatest piece of football commentary of all
time. Today we celebrate the 39th anniversary of that game. This was to be the
last appearance by a Leeds player for England until David Batty made his
international debut 10 years later.
This was similar to Smith/Phillips, in that the last Leeds appearance for
England was in our last season in the top flight, and the next after a long gap
was during our first season back in the top division. And the player making his
England debut to break the long run was a defensive midfield player.

Now that we’re in the same division as Manchester again, I’m just wondering if
there’s much to dislike about them anymore.

None of their players raise my hackles, Marcus Rashford is positively a
National Treasure, and the Baby-Faced Assassin is pretty likeable too.

Maybe I need some motivation.

Here’s a Pathé Newsreel from 1951:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7D0XLwBgf3k

It’s not the 4-0 scoreline, we’re Second Division to their First after all ***,
no, it’s the Pathé commentary, it thoroughly winds me up.

Is it too late to write to them and complain?

*** Although I would expect Richard Walker to come down heavily on the
goalkeeping, own goal for the first, handling error maybe for the second.

The poor defending from corners seems to be an LU tradition, and I can’t tell
if John Charles is involved. If he is, I don’t recognise him, and I’d like to
think if he was playing, he’d help keep the score down.

John

I'm watching the stream of the play-off game between Havant and Dartford (I was
born in Dartford, so I occasionally follow their fortunes).
And in charge of Havant today is none other than Ian Baird, formerly of this
parish. He's their assistant manager, but is in charge today because their
manager is serving a touchline ban.
For those who care about the game (and you probably don't) Havant are 1-0 up at
half-time, but are down to 10 men when a player swung his leg and didn't even
connect with his intended target. Not proper violent conduct and very harsh in
my view, even though it benefits the team I'm supporting.

[LU] Wigan go into administration

2020-07-01 Thread Tim Whelan via Leedslist
This might change things a little. My sympathy is mitigated by the fact they
would have had an extra £30 in they hadn't refused to sell me a ticket when we
played there on the final day of the Garry Monk season.
They are away to Brentford on Saturday, and their 12 point deduction will give
them plenty of relegation danger to worry about. And the article hints they
might not complete their fixtures. Depending on Saturday's result that could
well help us in comparison with Brentford, but not with WBA.

I've been watching a TV series from Norway called "Heimbane".

It's another in the "Female Coach/Male Football Team" genre.

I don't think it's been on British TV, nor on a Netflix-type streaming service,
and the only subtitles I've found are less than perfect.

In Heimbane there's a character called Eddie (played by Per Jan Vinje) who is
the club's groundsman and prop master.

He's also a very enthusiastic Leeds United fan and appears in every episode
wearing a different Leeds shirt.

In the episode I watched last night, he posed a trivia question to the team.

No answer was provided, so I'm wondering if anyone here can figure it out.

Here goes, pasted from the subtitles:

00:12:51,560 --> 00:12:56,780

Question 14:

what former Leeds player

00:12:56,780 --> 00:13:02,820

Quite a few Leeds-related questions...

- The kids must learn.

00:13:02,820 --> 00:13:11,860

Ok... what former Leeds player

played also for Sunderland, Arsenal and Manchester City?

00:13:11,860 --> 00:13:15,900

It's a trick question.

2020-03-01 Thread Tim Whelan via Leedslist
He's already managed my favourite club in the Spanish league, in the shape of
Athletic Bilbao. (Choosing my words carefully so I don't call them a 'Spanish
club', in view of their Basque following).
I've never been there, but I've 'supported' them in Spanish football since
1982, when I read that during the World Cup of that year the England fans had
got on well with the Basques when all 3 first round group games were played in
Bilbao, but not with the Spaniards once England got through to the second round
mini-group. So it was doubly glorious to see Bielsa's Athletic side outclass
Man United in the 2012 Europa League, beating the red scum home and away.

from outside the box that flies over the bar each game. I'm not sure either of
them have even hit the target from that range this season, let alone scored.
I'd leave it to Pablo, at most. What we're not good at doing is shooting on
sight from inside the box - Costa had an opportunity to do that yesterday and
passed instead. Bamford sometimes does the same, when he's not shooting tamely

interested that Slavan Bilic this week told WBA to start shooting from
outside the box due to their diminishing 'efficiency'.  Seemed that really
only our full backs (and CFs) were keen to have potshots, and reasonably
close to target. Was everyone else blocked off? Are we coached to keep
passing till a clear chance emerges? are the others getting a bit scared to
miss?

read a report masquerading under the name of Rich Walker - what have you
done with the real RW? (good report - essential reading as always and great
to see you pleased with the team!).Did you hear the Robins commentator

[LU] Millwall v Fulham

2020-02-12 Thread Tim Whelan via Leedslist
I've been watching this on Sky, as Fulham would of course go above us with a
win. May the lord forgive me for supporting Millwall for one night only, even
in these circumstances.
It's a cracking game so far. Milosovic given all the space in the world to give
Fulham the lead, then there was a truly shocking decision in our favour.
Millwall equalised with a goal at least two yards offside. It must have helped
that the linesman had Millwall's worst bunch of baboons right behind him. Then
Millwall missed a penalty. Why couldn't they do that against us?
1-1 at half time.

Re: [LU] Promotion

2019-12-12 Thread Tim Whelan via Leedslist
And of course, it depends on the distribution of points among the other teams.
Last season we ended up with 3 teams breaking away and chasing 2 automatic
spots, so by definition somebody had to finish 3rd with a relatively high
points total.
At the moment we have 2 teams breaking away, with none of those in the pack
below showing much consistency, this midweek especially. If that continues
(touch wood!) then we won't need that high a points total to secure 2nd place.

I have a probably irrational feeling that this season (even though it would be
entirely uncharacteristic of Leeds to benefit this way of course) the number of
points needed for 2nd might be a little lower. My reason for this is that I
sense there have been an above average number fo draws in our division this
year...and every time there is a draw, 1 point is sucked out of the system,
never to be replaced.

In the old days, we used to have stattoes on this list who would have been able
to confirm a) if there have been more draws than usual, and b) if that can lead
to a lower points total needed for promotion. But in their absence, I suppose
I'll have to just keep on with the tarot cards and the voodoo dolls.

This of course goes against the immutable law of the universe that
everything has to be harder for Leeds United to achieve than it is for any
other club, so it's probably best ignored.

Re: [LU] Long ramble mainly on MB and how rubbish we aren't (corrections)

2019-10-23 Thread Tim Whelan via Leedslist
Would we be better off creating fewer chances but being more likely to score
from those chances we do create?
On Wednesday, 23 October 2019, 06:19:18 BST, N If
wrote:

ops, MB quotes were not formatted correctly.  If you are interested
here's how they should've been with MB's statements more clearly.

Marcelo has talked in the past about playing both Bamford and Eddie would
reduce our dominance and the number of created chances by removing a
midfield player. After the game last nightI will quote from LeedsLive
transcript:

""They can play together. They should play one behind the other. This
player will be Bamford, naturally. Take this kind of decision you can take
in two different ways. For one clear need of the team, or because you are
convinced they can play together and combine movement between them. We
never had proof of this kind of combination in our training. Nketiah is not
with us in the international break, because we play twice a week. In the
week, when we prepare there are few chances to try these things. The other
reason is when you have a series of bad results and you have to find a
different solution. That didn’t happen. I think all these around Bamford
and Nketiah doesn’t help either of them. Nketiah has to make the function
to try to change the course of the match when we are losing and he’s not
playing. Bamford appears responsible for Nketiah not playing.""

Seems fair comment that they haven't had a chance to work out the game in
practice, and we know how MB values training, practice and players
confidently knowing what to do (and we have plenty of evidence of the
fruits of that attitude).  And in defence of starting Bamford, when they
were swapped at half time, we struggled to dominate without PB and EN
scarcely got a chance, so it would suggest that learning how to play with
Eddie rather than PB could need some work first.  Earlier

He also interestingly said:

""When you have more than one option for the team, it’s never a problem.
It’s two solutions for one problem. I try to manage this. When you manage
this, this fact had some difficulties the supporters cannot see. It’s
natural people argue with my decision because they don’t have all the
reasons I have. Bamford is a great player and Eddie Nketiah is a great
player as well. I am forced to make both of them a success this year
because if not I am not going to take advantage. If one has success I will
not be able to take advantage of the other one. This process lasts nine
month and we have 46 matches or 50 matches. We are in the 25 per cent of
the competition. We have time in the future so I can find a way both of
them will shine. If this doesn’t happen it’s not going to be a mistake of
mine. In the last press conference I said if Nketiah is not a success here
it’s my fault. It’s the same with Patrick. I am trying to make this work.""

Steve Evans is now gainfully employed as manager of Gillingham. And an
opposing manager recently commented that for Gillingham fans, watching what
happens in his dugout is far more entertaining than anything his team produce
on the pitch.

It's only a one game suspension for a 'professional foul'. But the club have

Dreadful decision either way. In fact three dreadful decisions...the dive, the

Neil Harris has just resigned as Millwall manager. Whoever said they were
rubbish last night  (I didn't see that game myself) must have been right.
Not sure if this will help us on Saturday or not.

Had the score been the other way around, I expect there would have been a
ton of posts. It could be said that "It's only a friendly"  but I suspect,
given the rivalry, team selection  and being so close to the start of the
season, both teams were seriously out to win. In the end, we were given a
lesson - I didn't see any of the match - did we come close to anything
positive?  Perhaps the 2nd tier for another season is not such a bad thing
after all.

[LU] Any spares for Ipswich?

2019-04-18 Thread Tim Whelan via Leedslist
I'll be the first to get the begging bowl out and ask if anyone who is at the
head of the queue in the 'attendance tracker' scheme is unable to go and is
prepared to get a ticket for someone else. You have to have been to 6 aways
this season to qualify as 'loyal' and the annoying thing is that I would have
been to more than this number had I been able to get tickets for several other
games that I wanted to go to earlier in the season.
I've already committed myself to spending that bank holiday weekend in that
part of the country, and declined a wedding invitation in order to get there.
This was on the assumption that my mate down there who is on the Ipswich
database would be able to get me a ticket. But due to the restrictions Ipswich
have imposed for this game (the strictest I've ever seen) he's only been able
to get one ticket for himself, no extras. He's asking around, but isn't hopeful
of getting another.
So if anyone can get a spare they are willing to part with, please keep me in
mind.

Re: [LU] Bielsa Disciple #1

2019-01-06 Thread Tim Whelan via Leedslist
It's being televised in 67 different countries, but the UK isn't one of them,
so I can't answer the question about why the kick-off had to be moved. Perhaps
if we get another away tie in the fourth round next year, those of us who can't
get tickets for the game can all have a trip to France to watch it on TV.
